The Rangers responded to their loss to the Stars in overtime Friday with an overtime win over the Sabres on Saturday; as Adam Tambellini was able to direct a Chris McCarthy feed past Francois Brassard.

The Rangers played a better 1st period out-shooting the Sabres 13-11. However, the Rangers found themselves trailing Buffalo on a late goal by Joseph Blandisi. The Rangers were facing a penalty kill to start the 2nd; but were able to get a goal from hulking defenseman Samuel Noreau just 6 seconds into the period on a shot from the neutral zone that bounced past Brassard.

From there the Sabres played the better game out-shooting the Rangers 25-17 in the second and third periods combined. Yet they were frustrated to find that nothing would beat Mackenzie Skapski. In overtime the Rangers were able to out-shoot the Sabres 5-1 and in a 3 on 3 situation Adam Tambellini used his speed to get to the net to pop home a Chris McCarthy feed. The Rangers are now 1-0-1 in the Traverse City tournament.

Notes:

The Rangers showed better chemistry and were able to lean on Mackenzie Skapski when they had break downs. Skapski was the best player for the Rangers making 36 saves. Part of Skapski’s reputation is that he can get white hot and become unbeatable on any given night. Sabres forward Justin Bailey said he was frustrated by not being able to score.

Samuel Noreau also had a nice game scoring a shorthanded goal on a shot from the neutral zone and getting into a scrap.

My issue with this Rangers team was that their defenders lacked the two way ability to allow the forwards to shine, but today the Rangers had lots of chances and Brassard was impressive in net for Buffalo.

Josh Nicholls also had an impressive night posting 7 shots on goal. Kevin Hayes wasn’t far behind him with 4 shots. Hayes looked really good and Ryan Haggerty had another good game putting 5 shots on net.

This was a very skilled Sabres team and the Rangers should be proud of how they performed.
