Larry Brooks updated his Sunday column with the following information on how no move clauses and expiring contracts will be handled next summer.

[su_quote cite=”Larry Brooks, NYPOST” url=”https://nypost.com/2016/06/07/nhl-teams-dont-have-to-protect-2017-free-agents-in-expansion-draft/”]A source with first-hand knowledge of the regulations that would be in place for an anticipated 2017 NHL expansion draft has told The Post that, contrary to initial information reported on Sunday, teams would only be compelled to protect players with no-move clauses (and contracts) that extend through at least the 2017-18 season.[/su_quote]

In essence, because Dan Girardi’s no move becomes a limited no trade at the end of next year, he DOES NOT have to be protected. On the flip side, Marc Staal will have to be protected as his no move expires the following summer.

This new information makes buying out Girardi even less fiscally sound as he could be picked up in the expansion draft next summer besides a possible trade.
