Vigneault’s Vancouver Return
Alain Vigneault returns to Vancouver with a quiet sense of vindication. After a “coach swap” that would make for good reality TV, AV’s Rangers are looking like legit contenders.
Meanwhile, the Canucks might be swimming on their last breath of air.
Rewind the clock to September 26th, 2013. Alain Vigneault was getting ready for his team’s exhibition game at the Rogers Arena visitor’s dressing room. Reporters peppered him with questions on his legacy as head coach. “It’s not for me to say,” AV said. “I took a lot of those players when they were just young guys coming into the league, and I think they’ve grown into mature players and mature fathers, most of them, and very good people.”
His handling of the media then is basically the same now. It also carries over in his handling of the team. Calm, cool and calculated. A stark contrast to the man in NY before him, who is now the man in Vancouver after him. John Tortorella has endured a nightmare of a season. From the mismanagement of assets, to controversies and injuries, this is a season he and Canucks’ fans would like to forget. Yet, they still have an outside chance of getting in.
As for AV’s thoughts on coming back with a chance to end Vancouver’s season? He won’t address it. “We’re going to practice and then it’s just another game we’re going to try to win.”
Yes, Alain, it’s just another game.
