Vincent Trocheck ties it late for Rangers, lose in OT to open trip
The New York Rangers were elated when Vincent Trocheck found a loose puck with just 1:54 left in the game to tie it and force overtime.
They had survived a miserable second period being outshot by a 16-5 margin thanks to Igor Shesterkin’s brilliance in net not allowing one to get by him. However, the team would only get the single point as the Seattle Kraken persisted on the attack and eventually knocked one in off the glove of the Blueshirts’ goalie.
“First period was great, second period was awful, and the third period was pretty even,” Gerard Gallant said via the team’s YouTube channel. “There was some good stuff, but there was some bad stuff in the second period that we got away from what we did in the first period. [Shesterkin] kept us in the game and we found a way to get a point but it’s not good enough. We’re better than that.”
Recap: Kraken 3 vs Rangers 2 (OT)
1st Period
Seattle opened the scoring 2:45 into the game as Jared McCann tipped Will Borgen’s shot from the right point between Igor Shesterkin’s pads. Jordan Eberle got the secondary assist.
The Rangers tied it on the power play at 14:58. Vincent Trocheck controlled the puck in the high slot and fed Chris Kreider low on the right wing. Kreider immediately fired the puck across the top of the crease to Mika Zibanejad, who put a one-timer into the open side of the net before Martin Jones could get from post to post.
The score was tied 1-1 after the first period despite the Rangers having a 14-6 edge in shots.
2nd Period
The second period was scoreless, though the Kraken flipped the shot chart with a 16-5 advantage.
Shesterkin made a glove save on a breakaway by Seattle’s Daniel Sprong early in the period.
Jones later stopped the Rangers’ Kaapo Kakko on a breakaway, making a pad save at the left post.
“There was a lot of opportunities to put a stamp on this game,” Kreider lamented. “It’s a long change (in the second period) that somehow makes us think we can open it up. But we got away from the stuff we did well in the first and then they come right on back into the game.”
3rd Period and OT
Defenseman Justin Schultz broke a 1-1 tie at 9:27 of the third on a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle.
The Rangers forced overtime on Trocheck’s rebound goal with 1:54 left in regulation, as New York had a 6-on-4 advantage with Seattle’s Carson Soucy in the penalty box and the goalie pulled for an extra attacker. Adam Fox picked up an assist to extend his point streak to 7 games. Barclay Goodrow was credited with the other helper.
The winner came at 3:39 of overtime after Eberle drove down the left wing and toward the top of the crease. The puck was knocked off his stick and right to Schultz, who squeezed a one-timer between Shesterkin and the right post.
“We saw what happened in the second period,” captain Jacob Trouba said. “We have to play simple hockey. We don’t need to make the cute plays at the blue line. Get the puck deep and let the forwards go to work. It was a big goal by the power play at the end and Igor played a good game but you want two points.:
