What’s Best For Alexandar Georgiev next season
If you are Jeff Gorton today, does the organization you are rebuilding choose a young and talented goalie prospect to back up the King? Or will you elect to sign a backup goalie that is already established in the National Hockey League? That is the question coming up today for the New York Rangers as they draft rounds 2-7.
Alexandar Georgiev, a rookie in the organization, impressed everyone last season. He has made strong strides in Hartford along with his stint in New York. The potential is high for the prospect goalie. As we love to see him play in the organization, I start to wonder what is the best route for our prized prospect.
I can see the argument going in both directions. We could stay with the youth movement and have the prospect backup Henrik Lundqvist. That is great because he would learn from the Rangers goalie coaches along with the King himself. In addition, Alexandar Georgiev would face tougher competition in games that he would appear in. The prospect certainly would love to stay in the league.
On the other hand, others could say he should spend another season in the American Hockey League with the Wolf Pack. If he does, then he would assume the starter role with Hartford. That would mean more playing time plus practice. That would not harm the prospect either.
Both decisions will impact the development of Alexandar Georgiev. The decision is undecided considering the Rangers have not re-signed Ondrej Pavelec. If they sign another goalie, then that would be a sign that Alexandar Georgiev would possibly play another full season in Hartford to grow. David Quinn and Jeff Gorton will have to figure out the backup goalie situation soon. I have thought about it. Either direction will be good, but what will be the best?
Alexandar Georgiev will enter the upcoming season in North America as his second season in the pro ranks. The 21 year old already has played impressive games in Hartford and New York.
