David Quinn will conduct a competitive training camp before facing Carolina
David Quinn is excited just to see his players back on the ice at the MSG Training Center. In a recent episode of MSG’s Home Ice with David Quinn the Rangers head coach was focused on the topic of training camp. “As I’ve said before, we’ve got find that balance of working our guys, being prepared you know,” he explained.
Scrimmages, lots of scrimmages
“My idea right now is to scrimmage a lot,” said the second year NHL coach. “The more we get guys going in game situations under these circumstances the more prepared we are going to be for those games that get started for the playoffs.”
The young coach also said he would be reaching out to fellow coaches in other sports just to see how they are going to manage this unique situation. He is open to new ideas because of the unprecedented times we are living in.
One on One Battles
Another area of focus for David Quinn and his charges will be getting back to winning those one on one battles that so often becomes the difference between winning and losing. “You can certainly create situations in practice,” Quinn began. “There are drills you can do with multiple players involved that you can create one on one situations,” he explained. “I do like the cross ice games, because you create one on one battles.”
What one on one battles boil down to New York’s man behind the bench is simple. “It’s quick thinking in small areas, it’s beating people to the middle of the rink,” he emphasized. “We want to own the middle of the rink and beat people off walls.” If his team can do that it will lead to good defense and transition to offense.
Training Camps are set to open on July 10th. While many questions such as who will be on the expanded roster remains, how camp will go seems under control. Another challenge met by David Quinn which will only make him better as an NHL head coach.
