Quick Hits – Rangers vs Flames 2/5/17

Here is my Quick Hits recap of the Rangers 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames.

  • Rick Nash – When healthy, Rick Nash has been a dominant force up front this season. He has been getting chance after chance, and he cashed in on the PP in the first period. With the Rangers trailing 1-0 in the first and the Blueshirts on the man advantage, Nash cleaned up the rebound in front after the quick shot by Derek Stepan. Nash has really improved his game after last season, but his production isn’t where it could be due to injuries. He has gotten back to playing his game which made him one of the league’s best power forwards.

  • Chris Kreider – While Nash has been playing like the power forward he used to be, Chris Kreider has been playing like the power forward he needs to be. Kreider has five goals in the last ten games, and he showed his abilities here. With the game knotted up at 2, Kreider took a breakout pass and sped up the wing. He then shot the puck through Calgary defenseman Dennis Wideman’s legs, and put it right into the top corner past Brian Elliott. Kreider has been one of the most consistent players for the Blueshirts all season, and has really improved his game from year to year.

  • Jesper Fast – If there was one player on the Rangers that doesn’t always get recognized for his contributions, it is Jesper Fast. Fast is a battler, a guy that always goes into the corners to do the dirty work, but won’t end up on the scoresheet. In this one, Fast benefitted from the hard work of his linemates JT Miller and Michael Grabner, and netted what turned out to be the game winning goal.

  • Michael Grabner – There isn’t a whole lot more to say about the play of Michael Grabner this season. He was brought in as a penalty killing specialist, but has been so much more for the Rangers this season. He scored his team leading 23rd goal of the season, and it was a beauty. Grabner worked a beautiful give and go with rookie defenseman Brady Skjei, who made a perfect pass back to Grabner for the goal. Grabner’s play has given the Rangers an added dimension to their game, and really allows AV to play his speed system.

  • Kevin Klein – Klein has not had a good season, and that would be an understatement. But if there is one thing that he always has, it is his toughness. And after laying a big neutral zone hit, Klein stood up for himself and fought against Michael Ferland. He played a simple game, had a hit and a blocked shot, and was in good position all game.
  • Henrik Lundqvist – Henrik has really bounced back well in the last few weeks. After a rough month of January, Henrik seems to have found his game. He is at the top of the crease when the puck is at the point, fighting through the screens, and is getting back to being “The King”.

    • NEXT GAME: The Rangers will look to extend their winning streak on Tuesday night when they take on the Anaheim Ducks. Puck drops at 7!
