Rangers Roundup: Team unlikely to offer anyone a PTO, salary cap status, and more
Teams are actively signing some free agents to PTO (professional try-out) contracts this week in preparation for training camps. Non-RTP teams open camp on 12/31 and the rest of the league opens on 1/3.
New York Rangers unlikely to offer anyone a PTO
At this time, it does not appear the Rangers will be offering anyone a PTO. New York is fully stacked and their projected camp invite list has several centers they signed this offseason. Kevin Rooney and Colin Blackwell will join Mika Zibanejad, Ryan Strome, Filip Chytil, and Brett Howden in the middle.
As far as left defense, with Ben Hutton drawing interest from several teams including the Boston Bruins, there really isn’t much out there.

Rangers salary cap and performance bonuses
There’s been a lot of talk all offseason about the Rangers salary cap and performance bonuses. We tackled the subject back in October after Marc Staal was traded.
Vince Mercogliano dove into it a little further with regard to the shortened season and salaries being prorated. Although the bonus will be charged in full against the cap, the Rangers would only pay about 68% in actual money.
So the bottom line is the Rangers still have the potential to pay out around $10 million in performance bonuses. New York is allowed to go 7.5% over the cap without penalty, which is around $6 million. That’s why they need around $4 million in bonus cushion.
