Rangers Win Game 5, Push Flyers To The Brink
After a poor performance in game four of their opening round series against the Philadelphia Flyers, the New York Rangers knew they needed to improve tremendously if they wanted a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven.
Well, it’s safe to say they did just that. Marc Staal got the Rangers going in the first period after it was all Flyers to begin the game. After this, the Rangers were set on cruise control for the rest of the contest.
Philadelphia had some chances, but they were either turned away by Henrik Lundqvist, or did not even reach the net. Not to mention that their power play did not help them much, as they converted on only one of their five opportunities. The goal coming off the stick of Rangers’ defenseman Kevin Klein.
Goals by Brad Richards and Dominic Moore, gave them a nice cushion heading into the third. However, it should have been larger. Thanks to a quick whistle on what would have been a Marty St. Louis power play goal.
A late tally by Claude Giroux in the third with about a minute left gave the Rangers a bit of a scare, but Brian Boyle added an empty net tally to ice the game, giving his team a pivotal win and a 3-2 lead in the series.
Marty St. Louis continues to produce for New York, he added an assist today and also leads the team in points for the playoffs. While Rick Nash is STILL without a goal, he is producing chances and creating space for teammates.

Looking Ahead
Both teams get a day of rest now before playing game six on Tuesday evening at the Wells Fargo Center. The Rangers have a chance to end the series that night and advance to the second round to face either the Pittsburgh Penguins or Columbus Blue Jackets. The NHL has announced a start time for game 6 of 7:30pm ET.
