Resilient Rangers make franchise history with late three goal outburst to sweep road trip
The New York Rangers have been a very good third period team so far this season. After Saturday afternoon’s thrilling 3-2 win over the Senators, the Blueshirts have outscored their opponents 7-2 in the third period. For the season, including their 5-1 opening night loss to the Caps they have scored 8 third period goals to the opponents 4.
This is a much different team than we’ve seen over the last few years because these tight games were almost always ending up in a loss. Instead, they finish the 4 game road trip perfect and are 4-1-1 to start the season.

New York Rangers make a little history
According to NHL PR, the New York Rangers three goal outburst in the span of 3:20 in the third period was the first time in franchise history that the team won a game facing a multi-goal deficit in the final six minutes (5:23) of regulation.
The last team to win a game in regulation after trailing by more than one goal with six minutes left to play were the Flyers. They came back to beat the Blue Jackets back on December 19th, 2013.
New York’s late goal bonanza to knock off the Senators was the most third period goals since they scored four jack on May 8th, 2021 in Boston.
“We’re starting to show we have that never-give-up mentality,” Barclay Goodrow said after scoring the game-winner. “Obviously, we would like to put ourselves in a better position heading into the third, but the resiliency that we did show in kind of forgetting about the first two (periods) and starting the third like it was a fresh game, it’s pretty good to see. Nice to know that we have a lot of character in the room.”

Rangers are relentless and resilient in the third period
Barclay Goodrow scored the tiebreaking goal with 2:03 remaining in the third period and the New York Rangers pulled off an unlikely comeback in the final-five plus minutes to end an unbeaten road trip with a 3-2 victory over the host Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon.
“After the second period, we knew we weren’t playing the best,” Goodrow said. “We knew that we were going to have to string together a good 20 to even have a chance to tie it up or come out with the win, so I felt like we really put our work boots on in the third period. Especially the last 10 minutes. It was a gritty gritty road win.”
The Rangers won their fourth straight to cap a four-game trip that featured close wins in Montreal, Toronto and Nashville. They also improved to 4-0-1 in their past five games since a season-opening 5-1 loss in Washington on Oct. 12.
Goodrow scored his second goal as a Ranger when he went to the net and deflected a seemingly harmless wrist shot from in front of the blue line by Sammy Blais. The go-ahead goal occurred shortly after the Rangers forced Ottawa into a turnover near the boards deep in the defensive zone.
“I think the resiliency that we did show, forgetting about the first two and starting the third like it was a fresh game, it’s pretty good to see,” Goodrow concluded.
Rangers rally to beat Senators
Before Goodrow gave New York its first lead, Chris Kreider began the comeback on the power play with 5:23 remaining by tipping in a pass from Artemi Panarin over goaltender Matt Murray, who was injured on the play and departed.
After Kreider scored, defenseman Ryan Lindgren tied the game with a tip-in with 4:08 remaining during a 4-on-4.
Alexandar Georgiev made 26 saves and survived allowing goals early in the first and third periods in his second start of the season.
“We didn’t do a whole lot in the first two periods, but we kept it close, we didn’t play poor hockey, but we didn’t play to the elite level we had to play at,” Gallant said. “Sometimes that’s what happens when you keep the game close.”
As for the win, Gallant was all smiles. “It’s huge. The guys felt real good after the game,” he said. “Again, we found a way to win late and it’s huge for our confidence.”
