Are the Rangers and Tony DeAngelo at a contract impasse and headed to arbitration?
ESPN Analyst Colby Cohen is stating that Tony DeAngelo and the New York Rangers have not made any progress in negotiations. The 24 year-old right handed rearguard is coming off a career season where he scored 53 points and finished 4th in scoring for d-men.
DeAngelo and Rangers impasse
Tony DeAngelo understands how the business side is played, he speaks endlessly about it on his podcast. One thing is for sure, he is looking for a multi-year deal in the range of at least 3-5 years. The money is probably over $5 million per season as well.
The Rangers are likely more inclined on doing a 2 or 3 year bridge deal at around $4 million AAV. This is likely why negotiations have stalled. One thing is certain, Gorton is not going to let him just walk away. The Rangers qualified him, so they will retain negotiation rights and will be compensated if there is an offer sheet.
Are the two sides headed for arbitration
There is still plenty of time for the two sides to work this out but arbitration is a real possibility. Some of you may recall that the Rangers once hammered out a deal just minutes before heading before an arbitrator with Chris Kreider.
Regardless if it gets that far or not, the Rangers will not walk away from the one year reward. That’s because he would still be a huge trade chip at the next trade deadline…or tomorrow at the draft.
