New York Rangers Daily: Blueshirts face demons, Erik Karlsson addresses Penguins trade rumors

Yet again, the New York Rangers look to regroup after a bad loss, when they host the New Jersey Devils on Thursday at Madison Square Garden.

This is after their brutal 5-4 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars at home Tuesday, when they blew leads of 3-0 and 4-3.

The numbers remain numbing. The Rangers are 6-16-1 in their past 23 games, 8-9-2 this season at MSG, 3-7-0 in the Metropolitan Division, including losing both games to the Devils this season by a combined 10-1.

The Rangers (18-20-2) are seventh in the Metro, 14th in the Eastern Conference.

Yes, they are four points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets and Pittsburgh Penguins for the second wild card in the East and are 2-1-1 in their past four games. But they have six teams ahead of them in the chase.

At least it could be a bit of a different look against the Devils, who’ve lost four of five themselves. Arthur Kaliyev will make his Rangers debut with Filip Chytil out injured. Matt Rempe is expected to play after serving an eight-game suspension for boarding and elbowing Miro Heiskanen of the Dallas Stars. Also, Igor Shesterkin is off IR and will start in goal for the first time in five games.

Here are our three things to watch for when the Rangers host the Devils, including finding a way to get the better of longtime nemesis Jacob Markstrom.

Rempe understands he must play smarter and can’t be as out of control anymore because he’s now a “marked man” in the NHL after two suspensions in his first 22 games.

The Rangers didn’t have an update on Filip Chytil, who’s out with an upper-body issue — although he skated Thursday morning. There was some good injury news with Chris Kreider, however.

Tom Castro writes that K’Andre Miller’s poor play is crushing the Rangers, the latest example coming their latest loss to the Stars.

On the trade rumors front, Elliotte Friedman reported that the Vancouver Canucks have their eyes on Braden Schneider, though the Rangers have no plans to deal the 23-year-old.

Looking ahead to next season, the Rangers will play in their third Winter Classic, when they skate against the Florida Panthers at LoanDepot Park in Miami on Jan. 2, 2026.

Rangers top goalie prospect Dylan Garand was selected to participate in the AHL All-Star Classic along with Hartford Wolf Pack teammate Alex Belzile.

The scheduled game between the Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames in LA was postponed Wednesday because of the devastating fires ripping through Southern California.

Along with the Panthers hosting the 2026 Winter Classic against the Rangers, the NHL announced that the Tampa Bay Lightning will host the Stadium Series at Raymond James Stadium against the Boston Bruins on Feb. 1, 2026.

Erik Karlsson addressed the most recent trade rumors by admitting his future with the Penguins is “up in the air.”

The Blue Jackets placed forward Sean Monahan on IR with an upper-body injury, believed to be a wrist issue, after he was hurt in a 4-3 shootout win against the Penguins on Tuesday.

Daniel Sprong was placed on waivers by the Seattle Kraken. Sprong has two goals in 19 games with the Kraken and Vancouver Canucks this season.

Connor Bedard extended his point streak to an NHL career-high eight games with a goal and an assist Wednesday, helping the Chicago Blackhawks to a 3-1 win against the Colorado Avalanche.

WATCH Pierre-Luc Dubois score the OT winner against the Vancouver Canucks, lifting the Washington Capitals to a 2-1 victory.
