Rangers recall Jake Leschyshyn from Hartford ahead of game against Ducks

Two days after assigning popular forward Matt Rempe to Hartford of the American Hockey League, the New York Rangers called up Jake Leschyshyn ahead of their game against the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday.
The 25-year-old forward appears to be the extra forward Saturday unless someone on the Rangers roster is ill or injured. All 12 forwards practiced Friday. Alexis Lafreniere, missed practice earlier in the week, but played — and scored his fourth goal — Thursday in a 3-1 loss to the Florida Panthers.
Leschyshyn was the Second Star in Hartford’s 4-3 overtime win against Lehigh Valley on Friday. He scored his first goal of the season 49 seconds into the third period and assisted on an earlier by defenseman Matthew Robertson. He has three points (goal, two assists) in five games this season.
Last season, Leschyshyn appeared in 47 games with Hartford and had 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists).
Leschyshyn has 77 games of NHL experience, including 14 games over two seasons with the Rangers. He was scoreless in one game with New York last season and did not record a point in 13 games in 2022-23 after the Rangers claimed him off waivers from the Vegas Golden Knights.
In 63 games with the Golden Knights over two seasons, Leschyshyn had six points (two goals, four points). They selected him in the second round (No. 62 overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft.

A bottom-six forward, Leschyshyn likely will sit and watch Sam Carrick center the fourth line again, flanked by Jonny Brodzinski and Adam Edstrom. That line’s strong play is the reason why Rempe couldn’t crack the lineup and was sent down to Hartford. Brodzinski and Edstrom, who were teammates with Leschshyn previously in Hartford, have each earned regular playing time through seven games with New York this season.
Jimmy Vesey started skating with the Rangers this week. The 31-year-old forward is on LTIR with a lower-body injury and must miss the first 10 games of the season. Vesey is still wearing a no-contact jersey at practice, and there’s no timetable for his return, per coach Peter Laviolette.
The Rangers (5-1-1) look to bounce back Saturday from a subpar effort, losing to the Panthers. The Ducks come in 3-2-1 following a 3-1 win against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.
