Left defense options continue to come off the board for New York Rangers
The options for the New York Rangers improving their left side defense keep flying off the board. In just the last few days, two rumored players have been taken out of play.
Jonas Brodin and Joel Edmundson
Breaking just a little while ago, Jonas Brodin signed a seven year extension with the Minnesota Wild for an AAV of $6 million. In truth, that’s probably more than the Rangers would commit to a solid stay-at-home type defenseman.
A few days ago, the Montreal Canadiens sent over a 5th round pick just for the negotiating rights Carolina’s Joel Edmundson. It is rumored they are on the verge of a two year deal.
Where else can the Rangers look?
The biggest left defenseman that will hit the market on October 9th, is Boston’s Torey Krug. Although he would look great lined up with Jacob Trouba, he will get more than what Brodin signed for.
I still like the idea of trading for Marco Scandella, a 30 year-old veteran defenseman that could probably be had for draft picks. That’s because the Blues need to continue to clear cap space to re-sign their captain, Alex Pietrangelo.
He certainly would provide toughness and playoff experience to the Rangers young team. Trouba would have a reliable and stable partner, while the Blues could also work on re-signing another important defenseman who is an RFA in Vince Dunn. The drawback is Scandella has fours years left on a deal, but it comes with a reasonable contract of $3.25 million AAV.
