New York Rangers rumors: Caps GM talks Lundqvist, Knights interested in DeAngelo, and Strome update
The NHL draft is just about done and we will have a full list of all New York Rangers picks later. For now, let’s check in on all the latest news and rumors surrounding the Blueshirts.
Capitals GM confirms interest in Lundqvist
Last night, Bob McKenzie reiterated once again what he stated late Monday, Henrik Lundqvist will sign with the Capitals. “The logical landing place for Henrik Lundqvist is with the Washington Capitals,” he said. “It’s a good bet that the King ends up in D.C.” McKenzie also did give a “wink” by saying that not contracts can be signed until Friday.
Then after the first round completed, Capitals GM Brian MacLellan called Henrik Lundqvist, “a really solid candidate for us.” This will likely get done within the first hour of the opening bell Friday.
Golden Knights checking in on Tony DeAngelo
The Golden Knights are still going to make a run at Alex Pietrangelo on Friday. However, they are looking for a right handed defenseman and Tony DeAngelo and the Rangers are at a contract impasse. Expect other teams to check in as well.
I did check with a source on the player’s side earlier today and was told, “we’ll see how it goes.” It sounds like talks are continuing but a new Rangers deal or a trade seems like a 50/50 proposition.
Rangers qualify all their RFA’s
We already learned during the weekend that DeAngelo, Brendan Lemieux, and Alexandar Georgiev were given qualifying offers. Today, the Rangers extended offers to Ryan Strome and Phil DiGiuseppe as well.
Negotiations continue with Strome, but at the moment it does not sound like more than a one year deal around the $4.5 to $5 million mark. The delay was likely due to see what trade options were available.
