Rangers prospects to face off in quarterfinals of 2025 World Junior Championship

You can be assured that New York Rangers officials will have their full attention on what’s taking place in Ottawa on Thursday afternoon. Their focus will be on three Rangers prospects who’ll play in the quarterfinal game between the United States and Switzerland at the 2025 World Junior Championship.

Forward Gabe Perreault and defenseman Drew Fortescue represent the United States at the tournament for the second consecutive year. Forward Rico Gredig plays for Switzerland.

Perreault and Fortescue are trying to help the U.S. repeat as champion after each played a big role when Team USA captured the gold medal in 2024 in Sweden. Each was selected by the Rangers in the 2023 NHL Draft — Perreault in the first round, No. 23 overall, and Fortescue in the third round, No. 90 overall.

The United States finished first in Group A during the preliminary round with 10 points (3-0-1-0), losing only to Finland in overtime. Perreault has four points (two goals, two assists) and is plus-5 playing on the top line with James Hagens and Ryan Leonard. Three of those four points were recorded in the first game against Germany. Perreault has been held off the score sheet in the past two games against Finland and Canada.

Fortescue, who like Perreault is a sophomore at Boston College, is a top defensive defenseman once again for the U.S. The 19-year-old is pointless, but a plus-6 so far in this year’s tournament.

At the 2024 WJC, Pereault had 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in seven games. Fortescue had four points (one goal, three assists) and was plus-6.

Gredig was a sixth-round pick in the 2024 draft by the Rangers. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound forward has one assist in three games in the World Juniors for Switzerland, which closed out the preliminary round fourth in Group B (1-0-0-3).

The 19-year-old had the primary assist on the eventual game-winning goal in Switzerland’s 3-1 win against Kazakhstan on Tuesday. He won 14 of 20 face-offs (70 percent) and logged 19:03 TOI as the second-line center.

Gredig plays for HC Davos in Switzerland and has four points (two goals, two assists) in 27 games this season.

Perreault is tied for fifth in the nation with 23 points and tied for third with 16 assists for BC this season. As a freshman, he had 60 points (19 goals, 41 assists) in 36 games.
