Rangers activate Igor Shesterkin off IR, send Kinkaid back to Hartford, and Nemeth on COVID protocol

The New York Rangers having four days off opted to remove goaltender Igor Shesterkin from injured reserve today.

Keith Kinkaid, who won his only start has been sent down to the Hartford Wolf Pack. In the Rangers 3-2 win against the Coyotes, he surrendered two goals on 31 shots while posting a .935 SV%.

Igor Shesterkin off IR

Shesterkin, 25, was back to a full practice on Friday. Previously, he had only been on the ice to stretch and take shots after practice had ended.

Gallant mentioned using the upcoming schedule to be cautious with Shesterkin’s rehab. After yesterday’s 3-2 shootout loss to the Golden Knights, the team has just two games in the matter of 10 days. Those two games are against the Canadiens (12/22) and Red Wings (12/27).

“We want him back as soon as he’s ready,” Gallant admitted on Friday. “He skated pretty good today. We’re definitely cautious with the Christmas Break coming up. We’re definitely cautious.”

Shesterkin hasn’t played since being helped off the ice at 5:08 of the third period in a win over the San Jose Sharks on December 3. He has a 13-3-2 record with a .937 SV% and a 2.05 GAA on the season.

Patrik Nemeth on COVID protocol

The team also announced that defenseman Patrik Nemeth is out on COVID protocol.

Nemeth, 29, has two assists in 30 games this season with a -7 rating while averaging 17:06 per game. Nils Lundkvist, who has missed the last 4 games with a non-covid related illness was back at practice on Friday and should be ready to step in.
