Rangers have already begun contract talks with Barclay Goodrow; six year deal in the works?
The New York Rangers identified Barclay Goodrow as a priority in free agency. Chris Drury decided he was important enough to give up a 7th round pick in 2022 to get early negotiation rights. It appears that the Blueshirts are already getting down to business to get him signed.
Rangers working on Barclay Goodrow contract
According to Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Rangers and Goodrow are closing in on a contract. Other reports suggested that the teams were prepared to offer the 28 year-old forward a six year contract. Such a deal may be steep in term but doable if the money is right.
Predicting Goodrow’s next contract will be based on how long the deal is for. His last one was a steal at two years with a $925K AAV. This one is going to be a lot more, with projections in the $2.5 to $3.25 million range.
What the Rangers have in Goodrow
Goodrow is a big and strong player at 6-2, 215 lbs. He can skate and produce on the bottom six with 20 points in 55 games this past season. He is also considered one of the best penalty killers in the game and is solid in the face-off circle. In 324 draws this season he went .500 winning 162 of them.
This is the type of player the Rangers have been looking for to improve their bottom six. He can be used as a center or winger depending on what other moves they make. The fact he’s coming off back-to-back Stanley Cup championships is a plus.
During this last playoff run he registered 6 points in 18 games. He also notched 68 hits and 13 blocks while playing with a broken hand. His acquisition is more than welcome and the expectation around the organization is that they will get him signed before July 28th.
Trade Freeze Frenzy
The Flyers made the biggest splash getting Ryan Ellis out of Nashville. Also the Maple Leafs acquired Jared McCann. Here’s links to all the moves at The Daily Goal Horn.
