Rangers must take a hard look at buying out Marc Staal or Brendan Smith
New York’s defense was exposed in all three games of the series against Carolina. What was easy to see is that both Marc Staal and Brendan Smith turned over the puck way too often. In truth, the Rangers best left side defenseman was Ryan Lindgren.
The first buyout period is currently marked for September 25 or the first day of the Finals. The later date of the two will be the actual start of buyouts. When it opens the Rangers have to think very hard about who to use it on.
The NY Rangers blue-line can’t have both Marc Staal and Brendan Smith on it next season
Next season, Staal and Smith will combine for a $10,050,000 cap hit. Either one of them will be a candidate for a trade, or a buyout in a worst case scenario. Staal has a clause in his contract but may be willing to go to a contender next season.
Marc Staal and Brendan Smith buyout calculations
A Marc Staal buyout will save the Rangers $2.133 million on the cap next season with a one year penalty of $1.06 million in 2021-22.
A Brendan Smith buyout will save the Rangers $1.566 million on the cap next season with a one year penalty of $783K in 2021-22.
The Rangers need to find a way to let the kids get into the lineup. K’Andre Miller and Libor Hajek need to get to work next season. With Nils Lundkvist waiting in the wings, Jeff Gorton needs to see what he has in his young defensemen before deciding on any trade involving Tony DeAngelo.
The only way to do that is to start clearing space this offseason.
