Rangers Roundup: Coach Quinn and players react to Marc Staal trade, RFA update, and more

The Rangers immediately put out their statements after news broke late yesterday Marc Staal was traded to Detroit. For the players it was an extremely somber day and they reacted as such on social media.

Players and David Quinn react to Marc Staal trade

Tony DeAngelo was the first to react with a sad face emoji on Twitter. On an earlier episode of the  “Watch Your Tone” podcast, he talked about his respect for Staal. “My nickname for him is “Lege” for Legend, because he’s a beauty.”

“He’s a great guy that has done everything (in this league),” Tony also said of the veteran. “There is nothing he hasn’t done, he’s a leader and everybody loves him.”

Head coach, David Quinn also said it was a “privilege” to coach Marc Staal.

RFA update (sort of)

The trade of Marc Staal and the full cap relief of $5.7 million now gives the Rangers over $20 million in space to try to sign all their big RFA’s. After the deal I reached out to a source to find out if any talks have progressed with one RFA in particular.

What I was told is likely confirmation on the fate of another Rangers veteran. According to the source, once the buyout is complete, all parties will be able to negotiate with a full understanding of what type of contracts can be worked out.

No specific player’s name was mentioned, but it can be safe to assume Lundqvist was being implied.

Rangers prospects continue to shine

Yesterday, I released an update on games played by Lias Andersson, Nils Lundkvist, and Olof Lindbom. All three played very impressive games and you can read that here.

Note: Vitali Kravtsov is in action later this morning.
