Rangers Roundup: Georgiev almost traded, Nemeth activated, Stanley Cup odds, and more
Alexandar Georgiev has enjoyed a revival since being thrusted into the #1 role when Igor Shesterkin injured his groin on December 3rd. Since that game, he is 5-3-1 with a 2.09 GAA and .929 SV%. That includes New York’s dominant win over the Ducks last night.
This is an amazing improvement for a goalie that was flirting with a 5 GAA and an .850 SV% heading into December. Interestingly enough, it appears the Rangers almost dealt him prior to him jumping into the spotlight.

Rangers almost traded Georgiev
“A league source told The Athletic recently that the Rangers were very close to dealing Georgiev before Shesterkin’s latest injury,” Arthur Staple said.
Georgiev has been on the market since the summer. New York will not be able to keep the pending RFA next season with the inevitable cap crunch once Adam Fox’s and Mika Zibanejad’s extensions kick in.
Recently, Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos said that the Oilers are interested in acquiring him. Were they the team that almost got him?
“Georgiev is out there. They are talking about him and there’s no way the Rangers are keeping him,” Kypreos said. “He comes in at $2.5M the rest of the year. He wants to be a number one goaltender and he’s not happy in New York. I don’t think it would take much more than a third rounder (to get him),”
I followed up with a knowledgeable source to gauge what the market is for Georgiev, and if the Rangers could do better than a third round pick at the draft.
“If you wait until the draft, everyone knows they can’t qualify him so it won’t be any higher,” the source explained. “They can’t qualify him at the end of the season – if he takes the qualifier, the Rangers will be in a bind and everyone knows that. So no one is really going to step up (their offer).”
Patrik Nemeth
Defenseman Patrik Nemeth has been out for personal reasons, but Gerard Gallant made it clearly at the start of the road trip that he is expected back soon.
“Yes, nothing is 100% but we are hoping.”
Yesterday, Nemeth was activated back from non-roster status to the main roster. He has not played since the Rangers 4-3 shootout win against the Lightning on New Year’s Eve. The 29 year-old has two assists in 32 games this season.
New York Rangers Stanley Cup odds
Per DraftKings Sportsbook the line for the New York Rangers to win the Stanley Cup is at +2200.
