Rangers Roundup: Morgan Barron and Matthew Robertson removed from taxi squad, NHL’s COVID reality, and more
Late yesterday, the New York Rangers removed both Morgan Barron and Matthew Robertson from the taxi squad. They are being assigned to the minors as the AHL season is slated to start on February 5.
Rangers reduce taxi squad
With the moves, the Rangers taxi squad is as follows:
- Keith Kinkaid (G)
- Anthony Bitetto (D)
- Libor Hajek (D)
- Colin Blackwell (F)
Throughout the offseason, I noted that Barron and Robertson were both candidates to start on the taxi squad but be sent down as soon as available.
What I would like to note is that both Matthew Robertson and Morgan Barron would be temporary and sent down to Hartford as soon as the AHL season starts. Libor Hajek is an interesting case because maybe it would be better for him to get in game action with the Wolf Pack too.
Regardless, when it is time to send down Barron, we could see a player like Johnny Brodzinski or Anthony Greco called up to take his place. If Hajek remains on the taxi squad, then there would be no need to call up another defenseman for Robertson.
NHL’s COVID Reality
The NHL announced yesterday that they have fined the Washington Capitals $100,000 for violating COVID protocols.
The National Hockey League announced today that it has fined the Washington Capitals $100,000 for Player violations of the League’s COVID‑19 Protocols which involved social interactions among team members who were in close contact and who were not wearing face coverings. – NHL Press Release
Due to the infraction, Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, and Ilya Samsonov are on the NHL’s COVID protocol list. What remains to be seen is if they positive while going through it.
The Capitals last played the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Rangers next opponent… the Pittsburgh Penguins.
