Report: New York Rangers interested in Conor Garland, and OHL goalie Mack Guzda
The New York Rangers are one of several teams with reported interest in Conor Garland of the Vancouver Canucks.
As the season marches on and gets closer to the March 21 NHL Trade Deadline, GM Chris Drury remains in hot pursuit for help on the RW.
Rangers interested in Connor Garland
“A number of their forwards that they are discussing with teams around the league… including potentially Conor Garland.” Elliotte Friedman said on HNIC. “You’ve all heard some of the rumors, Rangers Boston, Calgary, but I think NJ is in there too.”
Conor Garland was acquired by the Canucks in the big offseason trade that brought in Oliver Ekman-Larsson. They quickly signed their newly acquired forward to a five-year, $24.75 million contract on Tuesday. His AAV is $4.95M.
“We’re pleased to have reached a long-term deal with Conor today,” general manager Jim Benning said. “He’s a skilled young player who plays hard, produces offensively and will complement our top-six forward group.”
That AAV being under $5 million is a sweet spot for the long-term health of the Rangers cap situation.
This season, the 25 year-old has 10 goals and 24 points in 39 games.
Rangers looking at an OHL goalie?
Also noted on HNIC, Jeff Marek mentioned the Rangers as one of a number of teams looking at signing OHL backstop Mack Guzda.
The Predators, Maple Leafs, and Penguins are also in pursuit.
He is 21 years-old and plays for the Barrie Colts. This season, the 6-5″ netminder is 11-2-1 with a 2.04 GAA, and a .931 SV%.
Now why would the Rangers, who have Igor Shesterkin locked up for three more seasons be interested in another goalie? Possible insurance, but this certainly could open the door for an Alexandar Georgiev trade in season at the deadline.
