Report: Rangers and Alexandar Georgiev have yet to discuss a new deal, talks expected soon
The New York Rangers and restricted free agent goaltender, Alexandar Georgiev have not discussed a new contract this offseason. “I have not had any discussions with the Rangers as of yet,” Mike Liut, former Hartford Whalers goalie and Georgiev’s agent told me via email.
Talks with Rangers free agents expected to pick up soon
When it comes to these discussion, Liut noted that they normally take place around three weeks before the draft. A quick look at the calendar and you can see we are just about there. Liut also expects “things to pick up between now and then…maybe.”
For those who are reading into that as possibly an indication of what will happen with Henrik Lundqvist…don’t.
On September 2nd, I spoke with Ryan Strome’s agent, Mark Guy and he informed me that they are still in the “very early stages.” Mark also revealed that they are getting ready for the upcoming negotiations with the Rangers.
I am still waiting to hear back from Tony DeAngelo’s agent, but indication from a source says they are prepping, same as Georgiev and Strome. You can expect contract talks to start later this week or next for all four big RFA’s.
Expect the unexpected this NHL offseason
This has been a really difficult offseason to gauge the NHL landscape. In trying to gather more information for this story, I reached out to a source who explained there is nothing normal about this year. “We are all trying to figure it out as we go,” is how it was put to me.
Here’s what I am starting to hear, especially since trades have already taken place. Once we get to the draft and free agency, it’s going to be crazy. “The market will be flooded with players,” the source explained. Agents are going to want to strike as soon as possible on October 9th, because once teams spend their budgets, it will all grind to a halt.
Now the question is, who is going to be on the market that we don’t already know about? The indications are that we could see more buyouts than usual this offseason, making this quite possibly the wildest free agency/trade period ever.
