Should the New York Rangers sign or trade their way out of this rut
The Rangers are in a rut right now. Four straight losses by one goal will wear on any team, good or bad. So what can they do to get out of it?
Well let’s see some options.
- They can scratch players to send them a message. – Check.
- What about mix and match players all over the lineup. – Check on that too.
- They can look for sparks from the minors or taxi squad. – Check! They did that also.
What other option is available to them? Well, bringing in help from the outside via trade or signings.
New York Rangers should look at signing Brian Boyle
The New York Rangers are very bad at face-offs. Yes, that was very Captain Obvious of me. However, if you watched them against the Sabres they didn’t just lose draws, they didn’t even compete for them.
Former Blueshirt Brian Boyle is out there looking for a new deal. The 36 year-old center wouldn’t be expensive, and could be a nice 4th line center on this team. He would immediately become one of their best face-off guys and could help hold late third period leads.
Brian Boyle’s agent, Rick Curran confirmed with Forever Blueshirts during training camp, that the Rangers as well as many other teams have reached out to his client. No contract was discussed, but Boyle’s agent made it clear, “Brian’s not interested in a PTO.”
It may be the right time to pick up the phone and bring him in.
New York Rangers need help on defense now
The Jack Johnson experiment should end now. And if David Quinn doesn’t fully trust Brendan Smith as the third left defenseman in the lineup, it is time to trade for Vince Dunn.
According to Frank Seravalli, the Blues have engaged with a lot of teams on Dunn. When it comes to what the Blues are looking for, Elliotte Friedman speculated that a first round pick is the starting point.
The Rangers don’t need anymore first round picks. They already are overloaded with prospects as it is. Dunn is just 24 years-old and has a nice contract with an AAV of $1.875 million. He will be an RFA at the end of this season and the Rangers will be able to keep him with so much money coming off the books.
Dunn is a solid defender who is the left handed guy they need right now. Not next season. He’s already won a Stanley Cup and has 40 point potential.
Listen, the Rangers can try and work themselves out of this. That’s what they need to do anyone, but there are two glaring deficiencies that all the hard-work in the world isn’t going to solve.
It’s time to make a move.
