The New York Rangers continued to build depth on their organizational depth chart this offseason, when they signed forward Trey Fix-Wolansky to a one-year, two-way contract Thursday.

The 26-year-old forward has 26 games of NHL experience and twice was named a Second Team All-Star in the American Hockey League.

Last season, Fix-Wolansky tied for 13th in the AHL with 60 points (26 goals, 34 assists) in 65 games with Cleveland. He scored 20+ goals three straight seasons in the AHL, including 2022-23 when he set career-highs with 29 goals and 71 points with Cleveland.

Fix-Wolansky scored a goal in his NHL debut for the Columbus Blue Jackets against the Washington Capitals on Feb. 8, 2022. He also scored twice in his most recent NHL appearance on April 13, 2024 against the Nashville Predators.

In 26 games over three seasons with the Blue Jackets, Fix-Wolansky had four goals and six points, averaging 10:35 TOI.

The diminutive forward stands 5-foot-7, contributing to his lack of opportunity in the NHL. He’s expected to be a big contributor with Hartford in the AHL next season, but in line for a recall should the need arise in New York.

His signing comes one day after the Islanders signed 5-foot-8 KHL star Maxim Shabanov to a one-year contract. Shabanov’s agent said the Rangers were among those interested in the 24-year-old free agent, who finished third in the KHL scoring race last season.

After the Rangers opened NHL free agency by signing Vladisalv Gavrikov, the top available defenseman, to a seven-year, $49 million contract Tuesday, they set about improving their organizational depth.

The Rangers signed Taylor Raddysh to a two-year, $3 million contract to compete for a spot in the bottom-six forward group. They also signed depth forward Justin Dowling, who played for the New Jersey Devils last season, and added defenseman Derrick Pouliot, who was a first-round pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2012. Pouliot has 226 games of NHL experience, though is expected to be a veteran leader in Hartford next season.

Per PuckPedia, the Rangers have approximately $778,000 in available salary cap space with a shadow roster of 23 players.
