Two positive COVID-19 cases on Team Canada will likely keep Alexis Lafreniere away from WJC

News this morning out of Canada is that two WJC players have tested positive for COVID-19. A statement to the media from Hockey Canada read:

“Hockey Canada confirmed earlier today that two players at Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp have tested positive for COVID-19, and have been place in quarantine at the team hotel in Red Deer.”

Positive tests likely to impact New York Rangers decision on Alexis Lafreniere

The New York Rangers currently have three prospects participating in Canada’s WJC camp. One player that Hockey Canada wants is #1 pick Alexis Lafreniere.

Tom Renney reached out to the Rangers who told him they would consider and circle back with him. Recently. Hockey Canada VP Scott Salmond said the Rangers have not made a decision yet on Alexis Lafreniere playing at WJC.

Salmond also added that they will need an answer by December 6. That is due to the IIHF ruling all teams must be together for one week prior to entering Edmonton bubble on December 13.

Considering the spike in cases around the world and now directly impacting Team Canada, it would not surprise me if the Rangers opt to keep Alexis in New York.
