Report: New York Rangers Andrew Copp’s next deal could be around $5.5 million
The New York Rangers have been working on a contract extension for Andrew Copp since late April. Of course, with their limited cap space, it is very difficult to see a scenario where they can afford both him and Ryan Strome.
Copp, 27, posted 53 points in 72 games with 18 of those coming with the Blueshirts. In the playoffs to date, Copp’s added 5 goals and 10 points in 13 contests.
According to Jeff Marek on HNIC, Copp is in line for a new contract in the neighborhood of $5.5M AAV.
Andrew Copp’s next contract
The Rangers sent prospect forward Morgan Barron to the Winnipeg Jets along with two conditional 2nd-round picks, and a 2023 5th-round pick in 2023. One of the conditional second rounders becomes a first if the team makes it to the Eastern Conference Final and Copp plays in half those games. Two more wins and that will be the case.
Copp is coming off a one-year deal given by the Jets for $3.64M against the cap last summer. His previous deal was for two-years at $2.28M AAV.
“Andrew Copp has put himself in a really nice position,” Marek said. “He’s a UFA coming up at the end of this season and was a great trade deadline acquisition. You wonder about the marketplace for someone like Andrew Copp and it sounds as if it’s this combination between Phillip Danault’s contract or Zach Hyman’s contract.”
This time around, Copp has all the leverage as a UFA on July 13. The comps Marek mentions sound right too.
Danault, 29, signed a 6-year deal with the Kings for $5.5M AAV. He registered 51 points in 79 games.
Hyman, 29, signed a 7-year deal with the Oilers at $5.5M AAV. This season he posted 54 points in 76 games.
“It’s kind of a feel good story. He bet on himself in Winnipeg– he waited on his opportunity and it sounds like he’s going to take advantage of it.”
Copp will likely land somewhere between $4.75M to $5.75M depending on term. If the Rangers are willing to give him max term I can see him coming in at $5M per season. Should Chris Drury not be inclined to go past 5 years than I would look closer to $5.5M – $5.75M AAV.
