New York Rangers rumors surrounding first overall pick won’t die down, here’s a look at the top 3
The New York Rangers will not commit to saying that they aren’t trading the first round pick, nor should they. Both John Davidson and Jeff Gorton want to leave all options on the table, even if the first overall pick is just a gateway to a conversation on another deal.
Of course, for that reason rumors surrounding the Rangers trading the first overall pick will persist. Let’s take a look at the most popular rumors that are out there.
New York Rangers rumors with the L.A. Kings
This one is probably the most intriguing and realistic of all the ones being bandied about. The thought process is logical, because the Rangers need a future star center and Quinton Byfield fits the bill.
In a recent article in The Athletic, the Kings would package the #2 overall pick and several prospects like Alex Turcotte and Gabe Vilardi to the Rangers for the first overall selection.
While this is intriguing and in essence would give the Rangers three great prospects down the middle, the difference between Alexis Lafreniere and all three players the Rangers would be getting is just too big.
Montreal Canadiens ready to offer a monster package
Let’s do the math. Alexis Lafreniere is French Canadien. The Montreal Canadiens are a French Canadien team. Hockey is religion in Montreal. French Canadien hockey players are gods there. So I am surprised it took this long for this one to surface.
According to the Montreal rumor mill, the Habs would empty their prospect vault for Alexis Lafreniere. Montreal would send their first overall selection, and players like Max Domi, Nick Suzuki, and Cole Caufield for the #1 pick.
An absolute monster haul indeed. But still not worth missing out on drafting a generational talent in Alexis Lafreniere.
Ottawa Senators sending over Brady Tkachuk
“Maybe Ottawa will offer the third-overall pick and Brady Tkachuk to move up to No. 1,” Larry Brooks wrote in a recent column. That took the rumor mill by storm and even led to another where the Senators would trade picks 3 and 5 overall to NY for Alexis Lafreniere.
According to the Ottawa Citizen, Melnyk said in an email, “The idea of trading our 3rd and 5th picks for the No. 1 pick is nonsensical.” Truly that is a steep price to pay for Alexis Lafreniere but that’s what it would take just to start the conversation with Jeff Gorton.
The bottom line is this, the fact that these rumors are all huge packages to get the #1 overall pick tells you something. It says the Rangers have truly won the lottery because Alexis Lafreniere is widely considered to be a surefire superstar for the next decade plus.
