NY Rangers rumors Lundqvist, Georgiev, Buchnevich, and more
This is shaping up tp be quite the offseason for the New York Rangers and a lot of that has to do with winning the Alexis Lafreniere sweepstakes. Adding a high caliber young phenom is going to allow the Rangers to use picks, prospects, and roster players to improve areas of weakness.
The two top trouble spots are a top four left handed blue-liner to play with Jacob Trouba and a 2nd line center upgrade. Let’s dive into some of the latest rumors buzzing around the New York Rangers.
NY Rangers rumors – Henrik Lundqvist in Toronto?
According to Luke Fox of Sportsnet, he believes that the Leafs could be considering their options in goal. Frederick Andersen will be a UFA at the end of the 2020-2021 season, and may be on the outs. The Leafs could look at UFA goalies this summer like Braden Holtby or Corey Crawford, but for the cost and term it may not be worth it.
Fox also wrote, “The Wild, Rangers and Penguins appear to be open for goalie trades, but how sure can you be what they have to offer will look as solid behind Toronto’s blueline?”
So now the conversation shifts to Henrik Lundqvist and if it makes sense for the Leafs to trade for him now. For more on this rumor, check out The Daily Goal Horn.
NY Rangers rumors – Alexandar Georgiev
Over at Spector’s Hockey, they look at the possibility of the Leafs going after Alexandar Georgiev as well.
The Rangers could peddle Henrik Lundqvist (provided he waives his no-movement clause) but he’s also past his best-before date. Alexandar Georgiev is another Rangers’ option but he hasn’t established himself as an NHL starter.
Spector’s Hockey
While I agree he hasn’t established himself as a starter, when given the reins last season he was doing an excellent job. Additionally, I don’t think the Rangers will trade Georgiev, but until a move with Lundqvist is resolved, it will be talked about.
NY Rangers rumors – trading Pavel Buchnevich
Now that Alexis Lafreniere is penciled into the Rangers lineup next season, they can start addressing other areas like center and defense. One player that in particular makes more sense now to trade is Pavel Buchnevich. He is a talented forward but is too similar in style to Kaapo Kakko and Vitali Kravtsov who are projected to be top six wingers.
What if they trade Buchnevich and a pick to land a top left defenseman to pair with Jacob Trouba? Or maybe look at a trade for RFA, Josh Anderson in Columbus. The bottom line is the Rangers now have more options then ever before.
New York Rangers still interested in Kasperi Kapanen
The Rangers want to be tougher to play against and Kasperi Kapanen is certainly a player like Josh Anderson that would fit the bill. The question boils down to if there’s a fit between the two sides that doesn’t involve Alexandar Georgiev anymore.
Kapanen is also being eyed by the Penguins.
