Back in June, a report appeared in the Toronto Sun outing Maple Leafs star, Auston Matthews for testing positive for COVID-19. The reporter who published the article, was Steve Simmons. It certainly left a bad taste in the mouth of the Leafs and Matthews as well.

At the time of the diagnosis, Matthews was reportedly living at home in Arizona. The 22-year-old center, the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, was then put into quarantine. He recovered with no issues and is now with the team playing in the qualifying round.

Last night, after getting shutout by the Columbus Blue Jackets, Matthews spoke with the press. Then this awkward moment took place.

Simmons asked Matthews a question, and the Leafs forward didn’t hold back. “First of all it’s unfortunate that I’m getting a question from you Steve,” Auston began. “I didn’t appreciate the article you wrote on me,” he continued, “and I thought it was unethical.”

Matthews did proceed today answer his question, but he made sure to let Simmons know where he stood.
