NHL: Penguins extend Carter, Dell banned 3 games, Canucks new GM, and more
The Pittsburgh Penguins and forward Jeff Carter reached agreement Wednesday on a two-year extension worth $6.25 million.
The deal begins next season and runs through the 2023-24 campaign, carrying an average annual value of $3.125 million.
Penguins extend Carter
“Jeff’s experience and versatility have made him a valuable addition to our team,” said Penguins general manager Ron Hextall. “In addition to his on-ice contributions, his team-first attitude has made him a leader inside our locker room and we are happy to have him under contract for two more years.”
Carter, 37, is in his second season in Pittsburgh. He’s sixth on the Penguins with 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists) in 36 games.
Dell suspended 3 games
Buffalo Sabres goaltender Aaron Dell was suspended 3 games by the NHL Department of Player Safety on Wednesday following interference on Ottawa Senators forward Drake Batherson on Tuesday night.
Batherson injured his left ankle on the play, which occurred late in the first period of the Senators’ 5-0 win. He will now miss next week’s NHL All-Star Game, being replaced by Brady Tkachuk.
Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement Dell will forfeit $11,250 based on his average salary. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
Canucks name Allvin new GM
The Vancouver Canucks named Patrik Allvin as the 12th general manager in franchise history on Wednesday.
Allvin, 47, has spent the last 16 seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He served as the director of scouting before being promoted to assistant general manager in November 2020.
The move reunites Allvin with Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford, who was the Penguins’ general manager from 2014 to 2021.
Habs Drouin out indefinitely
Montreal Canadiens forward Jonathan Drouin is sidelined indefinitely due to an upper-body injury, the team announced Wednesday.
Drouin last played in a game on Jan. 20 against the Vegas Golden Knights.
The 26-year-old Quebec native has collected 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) in 32 games this season.
Drouin has 252 points (75 goals, 177 assists) in 425 career games with the Lightning (2014-17) and Canadiens. He was selected by Tampa Bay with the third overall pick of the 2013 NHL Draft.
