Rangers free agent target Torey Krug could be the right partner for Jacob Trouba

When the Rangers went out and acquired Jacob Trouba last summer, they invested heavily in the right-handed defenseman. Just days after sending back Winnipeg’s first round pick obtained in the Kevin Hayes deal along with Neal Pionk, he signed a seven year deal for an AAV of $8 million.

The vision was that he and his good friend, Brady Skjei would form the Blueshirts top pair on defense was quickly scrapped. Initially it was to break up two rookies in Adam Fox and Libor Hajek, but the two never clicked and Skjei was subsequently traded at the deadline for another first round selection.

Rangers rumors – Torey Krug top pair left defenseman

So here is a thought, if the Rangers can free up enough cap space, why not try and sign Bruins defenseman, Torey Krug? This depends on whatever they work out with Henrik Lundqvist either by buyout (save $3.5M) or trade at 50% retention ($4.25M). That alone won’t be enough, but other moves could find that $7.5 to $8 million it would take to land Krug.

Could the Rangers target Torey Krug in free agency (Michael Ivins/USATSI)

Krug plays a strong two-way game for Boston. He is small at 5’9″ and 186 pounds but has good hockey IQ and would fit into David Quinn’s quick puck moving style. He can play the power play from the left side and scored 49 points in 61 games last season.

On the plus side, he is tough and doesn’t back down from a challenge. He also seems to score in the playoffs notching 18 points in 24 games last post season and has 6 points in 11 playoff games to date.
