Rangers Roundup: Aggressive Gorton, Tavares situation, AV to the Isles?
Here’s the latest rumblings that impact the Rangers.
Gorton to be aggressive
This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone really. Jeff Gorton was aggressive at the trade deadline and is far from done rebuilding this team into a contender. Obviously, the draft is going to be his first opportunity to show just how aggressive.
Craig Custance recently wrote that according to his sources the Rangers will not be retaining all their top RFA’s and believes that one or more may be moved. The most likely names would be Ryan Spooner, Vlad Namesnitkov, and/or Jimmy Vesey.
My money is on Spooner being the one that gets moved.
We wrote yesterday that Lou Lamriello’s moves could go either way in determining Tavares future. Islanders beat writer, Mark Herrmann who covers them for the Newsday believes the moves show Tavares that the Isles are committed to winning.
What the team has now is direction. It has the leadership of a proven championship executive who exudes confidence that he will make things happen, with or without Tavares. When he was asked about the star’s situation vis a vis “relieving” Snow and Weight “of their duties”— as the news release euphemistically put it — Lamoriello said, “That certainly has not and did not enter into any of the decisions that were made.” – Herrmann
Vigneault on the Island?
While my money is on Lou Lamoriello bringing in Sheldon Keefe, Alain Vigneault’s name was mentioned by several as a potential new coach for the Islanders.

Scott Stevens? Alain Vigneault? Barry Trotz?

Sheldon Keefe, Barry Trotz (if available???), Scott Stevens, John Madden, D.J. Smith, Alain Vigneault. Rick Bowness. All possible candidates to be the Islanders new coach or at least on the coaching staff. I fully expect Jacques Lemaire to join the Islanders in some capacity too.
