Rangers Roundup: DeAngelo wants Liberty jersey back, Richter and JD talk goaltending, and more

Tony DeAngelo apparently shares the same opinion as many fans when it comes to the topic of alternate jerseys. Not only would he like to see one but he would love for a return of the classic Lady Liberty Rangers jersey that was a huge hit in the 90’s. The Rangers leading scorer for defensemen went as far as to call it “one of the best jerseys of all time.”

Goalie Talk On MSG Network

As part of “Goalie Week,” MSG will be airing a special goaltending edition of the “MSG 150 at Home” tonight at 5:00 pm and later again at 7:30 pm. It’s hosted by another former Rangers goalie, Steve Valiquette and feature guests Mike Richter and Rangers President John Davidson. Here’s some exclusive quotes courtesy of MSG of what you will see tonight.

JD on being traded to the Rangers

“My second year I played so well that I got traded to the Rangers after the season. And that was the best thing that happened to me. Aside from my family, that was the best thing that ever happened to me. I was blown away when I got to New York. I had never seen anything like this. Madison Square Garden, New York City, the busy streets, oh baby. It was quite something.”

JD on staying connected to prospects during this pause

“It’s been interesting. Thankfully because of Zoom, we’ve been able to as a staff and a scouting staff interview about 30 to 50 kids. And we’ve done 3, 4, 5 a day from their home countries, whether it’s Canada, the United States, Slovakia,  Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland. It’s interesting to see the kids a little more relaxed and to be able to talk to them about a lot of different things.”

Richter on the players he looked up to in the league

“When you come into the league, you eventually catch up to these people that you were idolizing before. Eddie Giacomin was the goalie coach of the Rangers and I had a picture of him in my wallet. I couldn’t get it out of my head that these were guys I was watching and now they were teammates and a part of the coaching staff. I also think we all in New York had that feeling when Messier came. Even though we were deep into our careers then because he was such an iconic guy.”

Richter on making his NHL debut during a playoff game in 1989

“It was good to get the opportunity to play. I’m indebted to Phil Esposito who gave me it. I didn’t expect that I was necessarily going to get in there. I didn’t expect it. I was so thrilled and excited. I had so much energy.”
