It appears that the buzz surrounding the Rangers and Ryan Malone is true.

So what should we take away from a likely Ryan Malone tryout? My first thought is that the Rangers aren’t 100% confident in players like Matthew Lombardi and JT Miller.

It is also too much to ask any organization to bank on Kevin Hayes being a productive NHLer right out of the gate. Not to mention their belief in younger players like Jesper Fast and Danny Kristo being almost non-existnent.

At this point, the Blueshirts having any interest in a player who is on the downside of his career and 34 years old is worrisome. Add in the DUI, suspension and amnesty buyout – it’s flat-out scary.

Our best hope is this; Ryan Malone who reportedly looked good skating around in a Minnesota Hockey Camp is brought in to push the younger players. His presence is merely there as a decoy, even if Marty St. Louis probably put in a good word.

Ryan Malone’s issues are his own. Word around the league is he is an excellent teammate, so character inside the locker room is no concern. The real worry is why a team coming off a loss in the Stanley Cup Finals would even consider an aging player with a low production output.
