Report: New York Rangers told NHL they are not interested in playing outdoor games

According to a new report from Pierre Lebrun, on a Board of Governors call some teams discussed the idea of playing outdoor games. Apparently, the Pittsburgh Penguins were leading the charge, along with several other teams.

New York Rangers not interested in outdoor play

The league then followed up the meeting discussing with each team their desire to play. The teams listed below are confirmed looking to playing outdoor games:

  • Pittsburgh Penguins
  • Florida Panthers
  • Boston Bruins
  • LA Kings
  • Dallas Stars
  • Carolina Hurricanes
  • Nashville Predators

As per Pierre Lebrun, the New York Rangers were one of the confirmed teams not interested in playing outdoor games. Here’s the rest:

  • New York Islanders
  • New Jersey Devils
  • Buffalo Sabres
  • Minnesota Wild
  • Tampa Bay Lightning
  • Philadelphia Flyers
  • Washington Capitals

The main reason presented against playing outdoors was local restrictions on crowd sizes. However, the Rangers also have an MSG tax incentive not to play any in which they are considered the home team.
