The Rangers and Tony DeAngelo took another step in the right direction. This afternoon, it is being reported that they have extended him a qualifying offer in order to retain his negotiating rights.

The Blueshirts need to figure the best deal to retain the 24 year-old right-handed defenseman. Obviously the longer the term the more the AAV will be because you would be buying unrestricted free agent years. What makes the most sense is to work out a two to three year deal with an AAV at or under $5 million.

New York needs to keep DeAngelo and his PP acumen right where it is. Last season he took a huge leap by tallying 53 points and finishing 4th in the NHL for blue-line scoring.
