The sophomore forward scored two goals Saturday, after adding an assist Friday, when the defending national champion Broncos swept Miami by scores of 5-2 and 6-2 in NCHC play.

Henricks earned First Star of the Game honors Saturday. He’s third on Western Michigan with five goals and 10 points through 12 games. Western Michigan improved to 7-5-0 overall and climbed one spot to eighth in the USCHO.com poll and seventh in the USA Hockey Poll. The Broncos visit Omaha for a pair of games against the Mavericks this weekend.

Michigan State remains the No. 1 team in the nation, after the Spartans picked up a pair of victories over Notre Dame. Defenseman Sean Barnhill had a plus-1 rating in a 4-1 win Friday and was plus-2 Saturday night in a 3-1 final. Barnhill remains a key shutdown defender for Michigan State, who’s on a nine-game winning streak. The Spartans continue Big Ten play against Wisconsin at home this weekend.

It was a quiet weekend for freshman forward Malcolm Spence, who he recorded two shots on goal, but no points during Michigan’s 7-1 victory Friday night at Penn State. Spence also took a minor penalty for hooking in the second period. The Wolverines lost 4-2 in the rematch Saturday. Spence had a plus-1 rating, but did not record a shot on goal. Michigan sits at second in the polls with an 11-3-0 overall record and hosts rival Ohio State at home this Friday and Saturday.

2023 top pick EJ Emery earned his second assist of the season in a 5-2 win for North Dakota over Arizona State. Following a freshman campaign when he recorded one Points (assist), it is encouraging to see Emery adding a bit of offense to his game, and not at the expense of his strong defensive play. Emery had a two-goal outing earlier this season and has four points in 11 games.

The sophomore defenseman had one shot on goal and a plus-1 rating Friday. The Fighting Hawks fell in the second game of the series against the Sun Devils by a 4-2 final. Emery had two shots on goal and a plus-1 rating, along with a minor penalty for holding in the first period. North Dakota remained sixth in the polls with an 8-4-0 overall record. They play an exhibition game against the U.S. Under-18 Team Friday at Ralph Engelsted Arena in Grand Forks.

Boston College is beginning to right the ship following a slow start, improving to 6-4-1 overall. They had a pair of victories over the UMass Minutemen in Hockey East action last weekend. Junior defenseman Drew Fortescue scored his third goal of the season Friday night in a 7-3 victory. With the Eagles trailing 2-1 in the second period, Fortescue’s low wrist shot from the left circle found its way through traffic and under the pad of the UMass goaltender to tie the score.

Fortescue added a pair of assists Saturday in a 4-0 shutout victory, improving his season totals to three goals and five assists for eight points through 11 games. Boston College has now won their past four games. The Eagles rose three spots to 15th in the USCHO poll, and gained one spot to 15th in the USA Hockey poll. Greg Brown’s squad looks to continue the winning streak at home against Maine this weekend.

The struggles continued for Minnesota when they were defeated by Long Island Friday night 6-2. Senior captain Brody Lamb had three shots on goal and one blocked shot in the loss. Lamb sparked the Golden Gophers on Saturday to a series split, recording five shots on goal in a 6-3 victory. Lamb assisted on the first goal of the game, coming at 6:38 of the first period when Minnesota was on the power play. He found the back of the net later on in the period at the 15:57 mark. Lamb shifted over to his off wing and rifled a one-timer from the left dot for his seventh goal of the season.

Lamb’s five shots on goal were the second most among all skaters, with another three blocked shots and one faceoff win. Minnesota is 5-8-1 and continues conference play hosting a pair against Penn State this weekend.

Swedish defender Rasmus Larsson was scratched from the Robert Morris lineup when the Colonials dropped both games against RIT by scores of 2-1 and 3-2. It is unclear if the sophomore transfer is being held out due to injury. Larsson last suited up Nov. 7 against Long Island. He does not have any points in three games played so far this season. Robert Morris is 2-7-1 ahead of a pair of games this weekend at Lindenwood.

Rangers NCAA prospects report: Sean Barnhill helps MSU to No. 1 ranking https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/sean-barnhill-michigan-state-performance Wed, 12 Nov 2025 19:12:09 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=472012 New York Rangers defenseman prospect Sean Barnhill is enjoying the view from the top of the NCAA men’s hockey mountain these days with Michigan State.

On Monday afternoon, when the polls were released, Michigan State was the unanimous choice for the No. 1 ranking in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey polls, after they earned a sweep over Big Ten rival Penn State.

Barnhill played a key role defensively for the Spartans, limiting Gavin McKenna and Penn State’s high caliber offense to a total of 25 shots on goal during a 2-1 overtime victory Friday. The freshman played a shutdown role on the third pairing, and had an even rating with two shots on goal.

The stout defense continued Saturday, when Michigan State shut out Penn State 5-0. Barnhill contributed offensively with an assist in the third period on the Spartans fourth goal. It was his second assist of the season in eight games. New York’s third-round pick in 2025 (70th overall), had two shots on goal and a plus-2 rating for the game. Michigan State improved to 7-1-0 overall and heads to South Bend, Indiana for a pair of games against Notre Dame this weekend.

Ranked second in the polls, the Michigan Wolverines split a weekend series with Wisconsin. In their 7-4 win Friday, freshman forward Malcolm Spence took advantage of a turnover by the Badgers goaltender in the second period and buried it to tie the game 2-2.

Spence was called for hooking early in the third period, and was sent to the penalty box for roughing toward the end of the game. He was nearly tossed out by the referees after a verbal spat in the penalty box directed at Wisconsin’s Oliver Tulk.

The 18-year-old had one goal on three shots, one face-off win and an even rating. Wisconsin gained a measure of revenge Saturday, with a 6-1 victory. Spence had two shots on goal, one blocked shot, and one face-off win, with a minus-1 rating. The Wolverines are 10-2-0 overall and continue conference play against Penn State November this weekend.

North Dakota gained two spots in the polls following a pair of wins over Omaha by scores of 7-2 and 4-1. The Fighting Hawks are at the top of the NCHC standings with a 3-1-0 conference record (7-3-0 overall).

Defenseman EJ Emery had two shots on goal Friday for North Dakota and took a minor penalty for holding. The sophomore blueliner contributed offensively Saturday, picking up his first assist of the season, a primary helper coming at 3:42 of the first period to open the scoring. Emery had one blocked shot, and was plus-2. Earlier this season, Emery scored his first two NCAA goals.

North Dakota hosts Arizona State on Friday and Saturday at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Defending national champions Western Michigan dropped to ninth in the USCHO.com poll and eighth in the USA Hockey poll after losing a pair of games to Denver. Sophomore forward Ty Henricks recorded four shots on goal for the Broncos in a 3-1 loss Friday, and had a minor penalty for hooking. On Saturday, with Western Michigan trailing in the second period, Henricks deflected a shot into the net for a power-play goal, his third marker this season.

Henricks had four shots on goal and a minus-1 rating, though Western Michigan lost 6-3. They dropped to 5-5-0 overall and look to rebound at home this weekend when they host Miami University at Lawson Arena.

Boston College stayed at 18th in the USCHO.com poll, and gained one spot in the USA Hockey poll, as the Eagles came in at 16th following a sweep of Vermont in Hockey East play. Defenseman Drew Fortescue had one shot on goal and a plus-1 rating Friday night during a 2-1 win. The junior blueliner picked up his third assist of the season in the first period of a 5-0 win Saturday on the Eagles second goal of the game. Fortescue had two shots on goal and a plus-1 rating.

Through nine games, he has two goals and three assists. His five points are the most among Eagles defensemen. Boston College improved to 4-4-1 overall, and continue Hockey East play against UMass this Friday and Saturday.

Captain Brody Lamb scored in back-to-back games for the University of Minnesota, when the Golden Gophers defeated Notre Dame by scores of 3-1 and 4-1 this past weekend. The senior forward had five shots on goal Friday, and put the game out of reach with an empty-net goal to seal the win. Lamb scored again Saturday, finding open ice in front of the Fighting Irish net, and finishing a feed off a turnover to open the scoring.

Lamb also picked up the primary assist on Minnesota’s second goal. For his effort, Lamb earned the First Star of the game, with one goal and one assist on four shots with a plus-2 rating. He won one of two face-offs taken, and was assessed a minor penalty for roughing in the third period. Lamb leads Minnesota in goals (6) and points (10) through 12 games. Minnesota improved to 4-7-1 overall, and hosts Long Island in non-conference play on Friday and Saturday.

Swedish defenseman Rasmus Larsson was in the lineup for Robert Morris on Friday against Long Island. The sophomore transfer had one shot on goal in a 6-3 loss for the Colonials. He was scratched for a 2-0 defeat Saturday. Robert Morris is 2-5-1 and faces RIT in AHA action this weekend.

Rangers NCAA prospects report: Ty Henricks hit injures younger brother https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/rangers-ncaa-prospect-ty-henricks-unjures-brother Wed, 05 Nov 2025 18:31:18 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=471054 Conference play began this past weekend in NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey, with five New York Rangers prospects hitting the ice for their respective collegiate teams.

It was all smiles for Ty Henricks and younger brother Tanner before Western Michigan opened defense of their Penrose Cup with an NCHC game Friday against St. Cloud State. But no so much afterward.

Henricks, a Rangers forward prospect with Western Michigan, was assessed a major penalty for direct contact to the head of his brother, and a game misconduct. Worse, Tanner Henricks, a defenseman and Columbus Blue Jackets draft pick, sustained a lower-body injury on the play that will require surgery, and is out three months.

“All I’ll say is that it’s a really freak injury. It wasn’t part of the hit. It was an after thing,” St. Cloud State coach Brett Larson said.

Western Michigan defeated St. Cloud State 6-5 on Friday, but lost the rematch, with the elder Henricks back in the lineup, 5-1 on Saturday. Henricks recorded five shots on goal in the two games, but was held without a point. Worse, he probably has some explaining to do at the family Thanksgiving dinner.

The Broncos dropped one spot to fourth in the USCHO.com poll, as well as the USA Hockey poll. Western Michigan is 5-3-0 and hosts Denver University for two games at Lawson Arena this upcoming weekend.

Rangers 2025 top pick Malcolm Spence hits dry spell with Michigan

Malcolm Spence, New York’s top pick in the 2025 draft, had two shots on goal for Michigan on Friday night, when the Wolverines defeated Notre Dame 5-3. The freshman forward had one shot on goal Saturday in a 2-1 victory. Through 10 games, Spence has three goals and four assists for seven points. However, he’s without a point in four straight games, and hasn’t scored a goal in six consecutive games.

The Wolverines stayed at No. 2 in the USCHO.com and USA Hockey polls with a 9-1-0 overall record. Michigan hosts Wisconsin for two games this weekend.

Defenseman EJ Emery had three shots on goal and two blocked shots for North Dakota in a 4-3 loss to Minnesota Duluth in NCHC action on Friday. The sophomore was minus-1 and recorded one shot on goal during a 5-1 win in the rematch Saturday. The Fighting Hawks remained eighth in both polls with a 5-3-0 overall record. North Dakota is on the road for a pair of games this week against Omaha.

Boston College was upset twice by cross-town rival Northeastern, losing by scores of 4-1 on Thursday night, and 3-0 on Friday. Junior Drew Fortescue recorded one shot on goal and had a minus-2 rating in the first game. The defenseman was called for roughing in the second period of the rematch, before he was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for direct contact to the head later on.

The Eagles are 2-4-1 and fell to 18th in the USCHO.com poll and 17th in the USA Hockey poll. Boston College is on the road against the Vermont Catamounts this weekend.

Minnesota dropped out of the top 20 rankings following losses of 5-2 and 4-0 last week to Wisconsin in Big Ten conference action. The Golden Gophers have lost four in a row, and dropped to 2-7-1 overall. Minnesota captain Brody Lamb had three shots on goal and one blocked shot in the first game of the series. He was held without a shot on goal in the second game, and took a minor penalty for slashing in the second period with two blocked shots. Lamb is tied for the team lead in goals (4) , and points (7) in 10 games. Minnesota hosts Notre Dame at 3M Arena at Mariucci for a pair of games this weekend.

Rasmus Larsson was not in the lineup for Robert Morris University, when the Colonials swept Niagara in a weekend set by scores of 4-2 and 4-3 to begin AHA conference play. The Swedish defenseman has only appeared in two games since transferring from Northern Michigan. Robert Morris hosts LIU at Clearview Arena this weekend.

Michigan State remained at the top of the polls following a week off. Freshman defenseman Sean Barnhill has one assist in six games, and has been solid defensively, tied for second on the team with seven blocked shots. Barnhill’s plus-4 rating is tied for fourth best on Michigan State. The Spartans are 5-1-0 and begin Big Ten Conference play this weekend at home with two games against top NHL Draft prospect Gavin McKenna and Penn State.

Rangers NCAA prospects report: Ty Henricks 3-point game for Western Michigan https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/prospect-ty-henricks-three-point-game Wed, 29 Oct 2025 15:00:15 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=471052 The marquee matchup of the week in NCAA Hockey pitted a pair of New York Rangers prospects facing off against one another, when Ty Henricks and the defending national champion Western Michigan Broncos skated against the Michigan Wolverines, featuring 2025 second-round pick Malcolm Spence.

Neither forward recorded a point in the series opener Thursday, when Michigan skated to a 4-0 home win. Henricks was minus-2 with one shot goal and a third-period minor penalty for high-sticking. Spence also had one shot on goal to go along with an interference minor in the first period and an even rating.

Henricks played a big role helping Western Michigan gain revenge against their rivals with a 5-2 win Friday night. The sophomore wing earned the primary assist on three straight Western Michigan goals and was named the Second Star of the game.

He also had three shots on goal and a plus-3 rating, to go along with another pair of minor penalties in the second period. Western Michigan is 4-2-0 overall and dropped one spot this week to third in the USCHO Division I Men’s Poll and the USA Hockey NCAA Division I Men’s Poll. The Broncos begin NCHC play against St. Cloud State on Friday.

Spence had a fast start to his NCAA career, but slowed this past weekend. The freshman committed a roughing penalty in the second period of the game Friday, had three shots on goal and an even rating. This was Michigan’s first loss of the season (7-1-0). The Wolverines climbed one spot to second in the USCHO and USA Hockey polls, and will be in South Bend, Indiana, on Halloween night to take on Notre Dame for a Big Ten Conference matchup.

EJ Emery had a quiet weekend for North Dakota, when the Fighting Hawks earned a series split against Clarkson University. Junior defenseman Drew Fortescue assisted on the first goal of the game for BC at 9:01 of the first period. A third-round pick by the Rangers in 2023, Fortescue had three shots on goal, two blocked shots, and a minus-2 rating in the loss. Boston College has a 2-2-1 overall record and fell two spots to 11th in the USCHO poll, while dropping one spot to 10th in the USA Hockey poll. The Eagles kick off the Hockey East regular season Thursday, when crosstown rival Northeastern visits Conte Forum.

It was not a good weekend for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, who were swept by rival Minnesota Duluth in a weekend series. Senior captain Brody Lamb was held to just one shot on goal in each game, and did not record a point in either contest, a 3-0 loss Friday and a 4-1 defeat the next night. Lamb had an even rating on Friday, and was minus-1 on Saturday, when he won all three of his face-offs Minnesota fell to 2-5-1 overall. Despite the losses, the Golden Gophers remain in the top 20 rankings, coming in at 19th in the USCHO poll and 18th in the USA Hockey poll. Minnesota hits the ice again Thursday, opening its Big Ten Conference schedule against Wisconsin.

Swedish defenseman Rasmus Larsson returned to the lineup for Robert Morris University on Friday night when the Colonials lost to Notre Dame 6-3. Larsson had one blocked shot, and a minus-1 rating. The sophomore was a healthy scratch on Saturday, when the two teams tied 2-2. Robert Morris is f 0-3-1 and opens Atlantic Hockey America Conference play against Niagara on Friday.

Rangers NCAA prospects update: EJ Emery scores first 2 college goals https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/ej-emery-first-ncaa-goals Tue, 21 Oct 2025 21:12:31 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=470073 Though the New York Rangers were quite happy with his overall game as a freshman last season, EJ Emery failed to score a goal and recorded just one assist in 2024-25 for the North Dakota Fighting Hawks. But the sophomore defenseman found the back of the net twice in a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday night. And he did so with fellow Blueshirts prospect Brody Lamb on the other side of the ice playing for Minnesota.

In the second period, with the Fighting Hawks trailing by a score of 2-1, Emery pinched in from the point, skated down to the right circle, and ripped a wrist shot past the Minnesota goaltender for his first NCAA goal.

The Rangers top pick in the 2023 draft hadn’t scored in 938 days. But Emery then followed with the game-winning goal at 2:25 of the third period, when he skated into the open slot and finished a quality scoring chance, set up by Cole Reschny.

Emery was called for slashing at 13:37 of the third period, though North Dakota was able to successfully kill off the penalty. He scored two goals on three shots and had a plus-2 rating in the win. North Dakota dropped the second game of the weekend set 5-1 on Saturday. Emery recorded one shot on goal, had one blocked shot, and a minus-1 rating in the loss.

North Dakota remained eighth in both the USCHO Division I Men’s Poll and USA Hockey NCAA Division I Men’s Poll with the split. The Fighting Hawks have a 3-1-0 overall record, and head east to Potsdam, New York, to take on Clarkson in another non-conference matchup this weekend.

Lamb had a rough game Friday, when he was assessed two minor penalties and finished minus-2, despite recording two shots on goal and two blocked shots.

The Minnesota captain rebounded on Saturday with a three-point effort. Lamb recorded the primary assist on each of Minnesota’s first two goals, and then added one of his own in the third period, off a 2-on-1 rush.

Through six games this season, Lamb has seven points (four goals, three assists). Minnesota climbed one spot this week in the USCHO poll to 12th, and rose two spots in the USA Hockey poll to 12th. The Golden Gophers have an overall record of 2-3-1 and host Minnesota Duluth for two games this weekend.

The Spartans defeated the Terriers by a score of 4-2 on Friday, before a wild 4-3 overtime victory on Saturday. Barnhill recorded one shot on goal, was plus-2 and took a minor penalty Friday night. The third-round pick (70th overall) in the 2025 NHL Draft had one blocked shot and a minus-2 rating Saturday. Michigan State improved to 3-1-0 this season and grabbed the No. 1 ranking in the USCHO and USA Hockey polls. The Spartans hit the road this weekend for two games against the Northern Michigan Wildcats.

Defending national champion Western Michigan swept UMass-Lowell, 2-1 on Froday and 6-0 Saturday. Sophomore forward Ty Henricks was credited with an assist on Western Michigan’s first goal Friday, and called for an interference penalty in the third period. He had one blocked shot and an even rating for the game. The Broncos are 3-1-0 and have a top-10 matchup on the road against the University of Michigan on Thursday night, before hosting the Wolverines at Lawson on Friday.

As for the University of Michigan, the Wolverines swept Robert Morris in non-conference play, winning 4-2 on Thursday, and coming away with a 10-2 victory Friday. Freshman Malcolm Spence recorded two shots on goal and a plus-1 rating in the first game of the series. The Rangers top pick (second round, 43rd overall) in the 2025 NHL Draft had one assist, three shots on goal, one blocked shot, and a plus-3 rating Friday. Rangers NCAA prospects report: Malcolm Spence stays hot for Michigan https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/rangers-ncaa-prospects-report-malcolm-spence-stays-hot Tue, 14 Oct 2025 19:27:21 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=469587 Six New York Rangers prospects saw action in the NCAA this past weekend, headlined by 2025 top pick (second round, No. 43 overall) Malcolm Spence. The 18-year-old forward helped the Michigan Wolverines be the biggest risers in the USCHO.com Division I Men’s Poll, climbing five spots to No. 4 in the rankings and receiving eight first-place votes, following a series sweep against Providence College.

On Friday night, Spence recorded one shot on goal and blocked one shot during a 5-1 Michigan victory. The freshman also took a minor penalty for hooking in the first period and had a plus-1 rating. Though he’s played well to start his NCAA career, Spence must be more disciplined and stay out of the penalty box. He was also assessed an interference penalty in the first period of a 3-1 win Saturday, his third consecutive game with a minor penalty.

Fortunately for Michigan, Spence more than made up for the penalty. He showed off his acceleration and skill, scoring a short-handed goal after coming out of the penalty box. That was his only shot on goal Saturday, but he’s now recorded six points (three goals, three assists) over four games to continue a fast start to his collegiate career.

Michigan moved up four spots from seventh to third in this week’s USA Hockey 2025-26 NCAA Division I Men’s Poll. The Wolverines continue their non-conference schedule Thursday against Robert Morris University. Swedish defenseman Rasmus Larsson, a 2023 fifth-round pick by the Rangers, is set to make his regular-season debut for Robert Morris in that one.

The Western Michigan Broncos celebrated their 2025 NCAA National Championship with a banner-raising ceremony before the regular-season home opener against Ferris State last Thursday. But the Bulldogs upset the defending champions by a final score of 3-2. Sophomore left wing Ty Henricks was credited with two shots on goal, one face-off win and a plus-1 rating for Western Michigan.

In the rematch, Henricks recorded five shots on goal with a minus-1 rating during a 6-4 victory Friday night. Western Michigan dropped out of the top spot to second in both the USCHO.com poll and USA Hockey polls. The Broncos head east this weekend, travelling to Massachusetts for a series against UMass-Lowell.

Rangers 2024 first-round pick EJ Emery makes season debut for North Dakota

After sitting out the first game of the season due to injury, 2024 first round pick EJ Emery made his season debut for the North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Sunday in a 5-2 victory over St. Thomas. The sophomore defenseman recorded one shot on goal, one blocked shot and had a plus-1 rating. Emery was called for a cross-checking minor in the first period. North Dakota rose to eighth in both the USCHO.com Poll and USA Hockey poll this week. The Fighting Hawks host Minnesota for two games this weekend.

Michigan State defenseman Sean Barnhill recorded his first career NCAA point with an assist during a 4-3 loss to New Hampshire on Thursday night. The freshman blueliner had two blocked shots and a minor penalty for cross-checking in the first period, and a plus-1 rating. Friday night, Barnhill recorded three shots on goal and had a plus-1 rating in a 2-0 victory over New Hampshire. The Spartans take on the top ranked team in the USCHO.com and USA Hockey Poll, Boston University, this weekend.

Junior defenseman Drew Fortescue doubled his goal total for the season Thursday night, scoring an empty-netter in a 3-1 victory for Boston College over Minnesota. Fortescue recorded two shots on goal along with two blocked shots and a plus-2 rating. The third-round pick by the Rangers in 2023 recorded four shots on goal and three blocked shots in a a 2-2 tie Friday night. Boston College is ninth in both the USCHO.com poll, and USA Hockey poll. The Eagles next game is against the RPI Engineers on Friday.

Senior captain Brody Lamb scored one goal on two shots for the Minnesota Golden Gophers in that 3-1 loss to Boston College. With just over one minute remaining in the first period, and his team already trailing, Lamb ripped a shot from the right circle through a screen and just under the crossbar for his third goal of the season.

Lamb finished the game with a minus-1 rating and recorded one face-off win. The next night, Lamb was credited with five shots on goal, two blocked shots, and won one of two face-offs. Through four games, Lamb has four points and 11 shots on goal. Minnesota dropped one spot in the USCHO.com poll to 13th, and fell two spots to 14th in the USA Hockey poll, heading into their next game against North Dakota.

The New York Rangers top pick (second round; No. 43 overall) in this year’s NHL Draft recorded five points for the University of Michigan in his first two collegiate games.

Spence started with a goal and two assists, when Michigan steamrolled Mercyhurst 11-1 in non-conference action Friday night.

The freshman forward skated at left wing on the second line for Michigan along with Montreal Canadiens prospect Michael Hage and Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick Nick Moldenhauer. Spence earned the primary assist — and first NCAA point — on the Wolverine’s fifth goal of the game, coming at 7:47 of the second period. Spence skated up left wing on the counter attack, drawing the Mercyhurst goaltender to his side, before making the heads up pass to Hage for the goal.

At 14:54 of the third period, Spence set up Aidan Park for a power-play goal, Michigan’s 10th score of the game. The Wolverines worked possession down low, and Spence slid the puck across the crease for his second assist of the night.

He later scored his first NCAA goal at 18:40, Michigan’s last of the game. Alone at the back post, Spence stuffed a loose puck into the open net, after a pass from Hage.

Michigan completed the weekend sweep over Mercyhurst with a 7-0 victory Saturday. Spence added another goal and assist in the contest. At 12:34 of the third period, Spence picked up a rebound in front, and tucked the puck into the net for a power-play goal.

Spence, who scored 32 goals and totaled 73 points in 65 games last season with Erie of the OHL, added a secondary assist on Matthew Mania’s goal coming at 19:17 to complete his five-point weekend.

Michigan rose three spots to ninth in the USCHO.com Division I Men’s Poll and climbed up to seventh in the USA Hockey NCAA Division I Men’s Poll. The Wolverines travel to Rhode Island this weekend for games Friday and Saturday against Providence College.

After failing to score a goal his entire sophomore season, defenseman Drew Fortescue wasted no time finding the back of the net for Boston College last weekend. Fortescue opened his junior season with a goal at 4:31 of the third period, though BC still lost 4-3 to Quinnipiac. Fortescue received a pass from Andre Gasseau at the point, and fired a shot through the Quinnipiac defense and past goaltender Dylan Silverstein to make it a one-goal game.

The Eagles failed to score the equalizer and Fortescue finished the game with one goal on one shot, one blocked shot and a minus-1 rating. Boston College dropped to 11th in the USCHO.com poll with the loss and 10th in the USA Hockey poll. The Eagles travel to Minnesota for games Thursday and Friday against the Golden Gophers.

As for Minnesota, they split a weekend series against Michigan Tech, winning 6-3 on Friday, before falling 5-3 Saturday. Senior captain Brody Lamb started at right wing on the second line, and recorded a goal and assist, three shots on goal, two blocked shots, and a plus-1 rating in the first game. Lamb broke a 3-3 tie at 4:13 of the third period and scored the eventual game-winner, picking up a loose puck along the boards in the offensive zone and firing a shot from the slot past the Huskies goaltender. He also assisted on an empty-net goal at 17:59 to seal the victory.

Lamb opened the scoring Saturday at 1:30 of the first period off a 2-on-1 rush. Unfortunately for Minnesota, Michigan Tech responded with four unanswered goals, pacing an upset victory. Lamb finished the game with one goal on one shot, one blocked shot, and was a minus-1. Minnesota fell to 12th in both the USCHO.com poll and USA Hockey poll. The Golden Gophers look to rebound at home Thursday night against Boston College.

Sophomore Ty Henricks recorded an assist and had four penalty minutes for the defending national champion Western Michigan Broncos, when they defeated the U.S. National Team Development Program 7-0 in exhibition play Saturday. Henricks was credited with the primary assist on Western Michigan’s final goal of the game at 10:07 of the third period, on the power play.

Henricks was called for slashing in the second period, and a minor penalty for cross-checking in the third. He was bumped up to the third line for Western Michigan to begin his second season. The Broncos remain first in the USCHO.com and USA Hockey polls, and host their regular-season opener Thursday night at Lawson Arena against Ferris State University.

Michigan State moved up one spot to second in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey polls following a 4-0 exhibition win over Windsor. Freshman defenseman Sean Barnhill was on the right side of the third pairing for the Spartans, registering three shots on goal and a plus-1 rating. Michigan State begin the regular season with a non-conference matchup against New Hampshire on Thursday.

EJ Emery, New York’s first-round pick (No. 30 overall) in 2024, was not in the lineup for the North Dakota Fighting Hawks during a 7-0 exhibition win over Manitoba last weekend. According to Brad Elliott Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald, the sophomore defenseman is day to day with an unspecified injury. North Dakota climbed one spot to 10th in the USCHO.com poll and is 11th in the USA Hockey Poll. The Fighting Hawks begin the regular season Friday night at home against St. Thomas.

Swedish defenseman Rasmus Larsson debuted with Robert Morris University, when the Colonials skated to preseason victories over Bowling Green University and Waterloo. The fifth-round selection in 2023 is the first NHL draft pick in program history for Robert Morris. He transferred from Northern Michigan University, where he had three goals as a freshman. Robert Morris’ next game is October 16th against Michigan.

Wed, 08 Oct 2025 16:12:44 +0000 New York Rangers News NHL Prospect Malcolm Spence Impresses in College Hockey Debut
Rangers NCAA prospects preview: Ty Henricks eyes championship repeat https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/rangers-ncaa-ice-hockey-prospects-2025 Wed, 01 Oct 2025 16:38:54 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=468986 As the calendar turns from September to October, the NCAA men’s ice hockey season is set to begin. The New York Rangers have seven prospects currently playing at the collegiate level, continuing their paths in hopes to one day make it to the professional ranks.

A sixth-round pick by the Rangers in the 2023 draft, sophomore Ty Henricks played 41 games for the Western Michigan Broncos last season, scoring 13 points (eight goals, five assists). Highlights from his freshman campaign included a goal in his NCAA debut against Ferris State on Oct. 11, and scoring the game-winning goal in the National Championship game against Boston University.

After spending the majority of his freshman year in a limited depth role on the fourth line for the Broncos, Henricks is poised for a breakout season in an elevated spot on the depth chart and will be relied on to produce more offensively. Western Michigan is ranked first overall in the USCHO.com Men’s Division I Poll, receiving 29 first place votes. The Broncos host an exhibition game against the U.S. National Under-18 Team on Saturday to begin their quest to repeat as national champion.

Drafted in the third round in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, Sean Barnhill of Michigan State spent the 2024-25 season with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound defenseman tallied four goals and eight assists for 12 points and had a plus-8 rating in 54 games. According to EliteProspects 2025 NHL Draft Guide, “With a deep, balanced stance and quick feet, Barnhill denies rushes and then jumps up into the play. He matches the footwork of smaller, high-skill attackers with ease, and he rarely overextends. The skating appears most in his rush defense, where he makes some high-level stops with his feet moving after taking away the middle.”

Barnhill fits the mold of a towering prospect the Rangers front office seem to like. He is a good, mobile skater, which complements his long reach, and has the ability to move the puck well. He is viewed as a solid two-way defenseman, “an animal,” per the NHL Network analysts at the draft. He’ll have plenty of time to fill out and develop at the NCAA level, being part of a strong Michigan State team.

The Spartans were chosen as the top team in the 2025 Big Ten preseason coaches poll and are ranked No. 3 overall nationally, receiving 14 first-place votes. Michigan State hosts an exhibition against Windsor on Friday.

After watching teammate Gabe Perreault turn pro with the Rangers and skate in five NHL games last spring, defenseman Drew Fortescue chose to return to Boston College for his junior season. The 6-foot-2 left-shot blueliner skated in 36 games for the Eagles in 2024-25, registering 11 assists and 29 blocked shots. His plus-28 rating was tied for seventh-best nationally and second-best in Hockey East.

Fortescue also helped the United States win a second consecutive gold medal at the 2025 World Junior Championship. Despite recording no points in the tournament, Fortescue tied for 3rd among all defensemen with a plus-6 rating, and played on the top pairing for the Americans. During the semi-final against Czechia, the TSN broadcast said this about Fortescue “Sometimes you don’t notice him in a game and it’s because he’s doing everything right. He’s a Rangers draft pick – a good, solid, reliable defender coming your way pretty soon.”

Boston College ranks fifth in the Hockey East Men’s Preseason Coach’s Poll and sixth in the USCHO.com Men’s Division I Poll. They kick off the season against Quinnipiac University on Friday.

Senior forward Brody Lamb was named as one of three captains at the University of Minnesota for the 2025-26 season.

The Byron, Minnesota, native is back on campus as the Golden Gopher’s highest returning scorer, after he posted a career-best 17 goals and nine assists for 26 points. He also led the team in power-play goals with eight. Lamb’s been named Big Ten Conference Star of the Week four times in three seasons, and skated in 117 career games.

Minnesota is ranked eighth in the USCHO.com Men’s Division I Poll, and third behind Michigan State and Penn State in the Big Ten Preseason Poll. They host a weekend series against Michigan Tech this Friday and Saturday.

EJ Emery, the Rangers first-round pick in 2024, returns to North Dakota for his sophomore season, looking to round out his game after recording a lone assist in 31 games with the Fighting Hawks. The 6-foot-3 right-shot defenseman blocked 29 shots as a freshman and finished with a plus-3 rating. After being a late roster cut from the United States World Junior Championships team in 2025, Emery hopes to crack the lineup for the 2026 tournament.

Despite a lack of offensive production, Rangers director of player development Jed Ortmeyer believes that Emery’s development is on the right track and he showed flashes of promise at the NCAA level.

“He had a really good year. He’s one of the youngest defensemen in college hockey as a true freshman,” Ortmeyer said this summer. “It’s a tough league he was playing in. He was able to step in and have a big role and play big minutes for them. I think his development is heading in the right direction and he’s on a great path at a great school. We are excited about what he’s doing and where he’s going.”

The Rangers don’t want Emery to rush through his development process. Ortmeyer feels Emery is not only making strides as a player, but his mind is in the right place.

“I can’t put a timeline on it, everybody develops at their own pace,” Ortmeyer said. “He’s growing into his body. He’s put in a lot of work with the nutritionist and everybody to make sure he’s developing as best as he can, as fast as he can. He’s great to work with. He’s eager to get better. Again, he’s in a great situation in North Dakota and we are excited to keep working with him.”

North Dakota was picked third in the NCHC preseason media poll, receiving five first place votes. The Fighting Hawks rank 11th in the USCHO.com Men’s Division I Poll and open the season Saturday with an exhibition against Manitoba.

The Rangers may have gotten a steal during the second round of the 2025 NHL Draft selecting Malcom Spence. The 6-foot-1 forward was a projected by many to be a first-round pick. Serving as an assistant captain this past season with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, Spence recorded 32 goals and 41 assists for 73 points in 65 games.

New York ultimately selected Spence with the No. 43 overall pick, and the Rangers love his speed and strong skating abilities.

“His speed is a weapon,” Ortmeyer explained. “His skating ability too. He’s tenacious with the puck. He’s been able to produce at the junior level. I think it’ll be a good spot for him to develop.”

The 18-year-old forward is set to play at the prestigious University of Michigan this upcoming season.

“I know to play in the NHL, you have to be physically ready,” Spence said. “Maybe there are parts of my game skill-wise that may be ready, but physically I’m not. I know going to Michigan is going to give me more runway time. For me to jump in as an impact player, that’s what I want to do.”

Michigan is ranked 12th in the USCHO.com Men’s Division I Poll, and picked fourth in the Big Ten hockey preseason coaches poll. The Wolverines host Mercyhurst for a weekend series Friday and Saturday to begin the 2025-26 season.

Swedish defenseman Rasmus Larsson transferred to Robert Morris University after skating in 29 games for the Northern Michigan Wildcats last season as a freshman. Larsson ranked second among NMU defenseman with three goals and 60 blocked shots. A fifth-round selection in 2023 by the Rangers, Larsson is the first NHL Draft pick to join Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey program. The Colonials open the season Saturday at Bowling Green.

What makes Rangers prospect Drew Fortescue ‘tremendous shutdown defenseman’ https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/drew-fortescue-tremendous-shutdown-defenseman Sat, 09 Aug 2025 16:03:58 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=467014 For the past two seasons, Drew Fortescue played in the shadow of top New York Rangers prospect Gabe Perreault.

That doesn’t mean the 20-year-old defenseman failed to impress. On the contrary. Fortescue was a solid regular in the Boston College lineup and helped the United States win consecutive gold medals at the 2024 and 2025 World Junior Championships.

It just so happened that Perreault, a flashy star forward selected in the first round (No. 23 overall) by the Rangers in the 2023 NHL Draft, was Fortescue’s teammate both at BC and Team USA. So, Perreault received much more attention than Fortescue, who was chosen in the third round of the same draft by the Rangers.

However, Fortescue will no longer be the “other” Rangers prospects at Boston College this fall, since Perreault turned pro last spring and is vying for a spot on New York’s opening-night roster. And considering his junior season could be his last in college before signing an entry-level contract in the spring of 2026, you better believe Fortescue will be under some heavy scrutiny this coming season.

But it’s not like Fortescue hasn’t already excelled under the spotlight. Mike Morreale, NHL.com’s draft and prospects expert, points out that one need not look any further than Fortescue’s outstanding play in the past two World Junior tournaments to see what kind of future professional the Rangers have on their hands.

“Some players just have that ability about them to be able to play well on an international stage. Fortescue is right in that mold,” Morreale told Forever Blueshirts on the RINK RAP podcast. “He’s a tremendous shutdown defenseman on the left side, and that was an area that the U.S. needed. And not only is he a shutdown guy, but he’s strong, he’s abrasive in the corners.”

Though high-scoring teammates like Perreault, Ryan Leonard, Cole Hutson and James Hagens received most of the press and adulation for Team USA’s success at the World Juniors, Fortescue was the glue. He played a quiet, steady game for the U.S. throughout each tournament, a fixture in their top-four on defense.

Though he scored a goal and had three assists in seven WJC games in 2024, Fortescue didn’t record a single point in 2025. That didn’t matter at all. He was terrific in his role as shutdown defenseman.

“He was just phenomenal,” Morreale stated. “I remember (assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey and former Rangers goalie) John Vanbiesbrouck saying Drew was a major, major piece on that team and winning that second gold medal.”

Fortescue said at Rangers development camp in July that “it was always the plan” for him to return to BC for his junior year. He and the Rangers organization both see the advantage for him to continue to grow his game, gain high-level NCAA experience, and fill out physically.

The Pearl River, New York, native is listed at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds. Though his game is not predicated solely on physical play, it’d behoove him to continue to get bigger and stronger before making a run at an NHL job in the not-so-distant future.

“Fortescue is one of those guys who knows how to play it physically,” Morreale explained. “It doesn’t always have to be body contact. It can also be how he uses his stick, the gapping, the positioning, and Fortescue has really mastered that at the college level and how how he was able to produce at the World Juniors.”

That’s music to the ears of Chris Drury and Co. because the Rangers could really use someone with Fortescue’s skill set to be a viable and affordable option on the blue line, perhaps as soon as the 2026-27 season.

Assuming newcomer Scott Morrow locks down a third-pair spot on the right side next season, Fortescue could be in play to be his left-side partner in two years.

That left side could feature Vladislav Gavrikov, Braden Schneider (on his off side), Urho Vaakanainen and/or Fortescue in 2026-27. The right side could be Adam Fox, Will Borgen and either Schneider or Morrow.

No doubt, there’s an opportunity waiting for Fortescue. And even further down the road that could be a top-four shutdown pairing with EJ Emery, New York’s first-round pick in 2024, who fits that shutdown right-shot slot on defense.

Fortescue, though, is not thinking that far down the line.

“I think just kind of right now, I’m focused on getting bigger and stronger,” he said. “That’s kind of been my biggest focus going into next year.

“Just continuing to do that, trying to focus on it the best I can and see what happens.”

Gabe Perreault viewed as prospect most likely to impact Rangers roster: poll https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/gabe-perreault-prospect-impact-roster-fan-poll Mon, 07 Jul 2025 20:40:18 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=466077 It probably isn’t a major surprise, but New York Rangers fans sent a very loud and clear message that they believe Gabe Perreault is far and away the prospect who will make the biggest impact on the organization over the course of his career.

Perreault received 78.4 percent of the vote in a poll conducted by Forever Blueshirts on social media. The other options on the list were defenseman EJ Emery, their first-round pick (No. 30 overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft; defenseman Drew Fortescue, a third-round selection (No. 90 overall) in the 2023 draft; and New York’s top pick this year, forward Malcolm Spence, who was selected in the second round (No. 43 overall).

Emery (North Dakota; sophomore) and Fortescue (Boston College; junior) are shut-down defenders playing in the NCAA. Fortescue, who helped the United States win consecutive World Junior Championships in 2024 and 2025, likely will turn pro next spring. Emery needs more seasoning and could remain in school through the 2026-27 season. Though neither is a flashy prospect, the Rangers hope each helps solidify their back end for years to come once they reach the NHL.

Fortescue, Perreault’s teammate for two years at BC and with Team USA, finished second, garnering 10.5 percent of the fan vote. Though he’s a former first-round pick, Emery had just 2.4 percent of the vote, last among the four options.

Spence finished third in the poll with 8.7 percent of the vote. He scored 32 goals and had 73 points in 65 games with Erie of the OHL last season, and is a University of Michigan commit.

One player excluded from the poll was Brennan Othmann, since the 22-year-old forward didn’t attend prospects development camp last week. That’s a sign Othmann has pretty much aged out of the prospect label. Entering his third pro season, Othmann has his sights set on cracking the opening-night roster after he appeared in 22 games with the Rangers last season. He could be in a battle with Perreault, who’s two years younger, to make the team this fall.

As for Perreault, his place atop the fan vote speaks to his talent and trajectory. The 2023 first-round pick (No. 23 overall) had 108 points during his two seasons with BC, and added 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) 14 WJC games for Team USA. He made his NHL debut late last season and was pointless in five games with the Rangers, most often playing in the top six.

The Rangers will give him every opportunity to make the big club in the fall. He’s easily their most skilled forward prospect, and his exceptional hockey IQ has him in line to play regularly in the NHL sooner rather than later.

“I’m gonna go with the mentality that I’m gonna make the team,” Perreault said last week. “That’s what everyone’s mentality should be. I’m gonna do everything this summer, train hard, work on the little things I need to, and come here to make the team.”

Those “little things” have been a major focus of his offseason work. Perreault’s been in Chicago alongside Patrick Kane, J.T. Compher, and Christian Dvorak, among other NHL players, adding strength, fine-tuning his skating and learning from what he calls “the best stick handler in the world.”

Perreault is also paying close attention to his defensive game, puck battles, and D-zone coverage — areas he knows he’ll need to sharpen to earn ice time from a new coaching staff led by Mike Sullivan.

“I think defensively and all that, I was pretty good,” Perreault said of his brief NHL stint. “But going into this camp just trying to make more of an impact, make some plays.”

He added that the five games he played at the end of last season were eye-opening and humbling, especially when he was matched up against elite NHL talent like Tampa Bay Lightning superstar Nikita Kucherov.

“It was good in that situation to learn,” he said. “To see how fast and how smart the guys are.”

Still, there’s no guarantee that Perreault makes the team out of camp. The Rangers could opt to start him in Hartford to give him heavier AHL minutes and ease the transition, But if he comes in strong — especially in the preseason — there’s a spot to be earned in the middle-six forward group.

But whenever he does land on Broadway, it’s clear that expectations are high, from the organization and fan base, that he should be the most impactful Rangers prospect.
