It feels like a good time to analyze where the Rangers’ higher-profile younger players stand two months into the 2025-26 season. So, let’s examine whose stock is on the rise, and who is trending the other way.

To be included in this stock report, players must be 24 years old or younger, and have fewer than 100 games of NHL experience. That excludes young NHL “veterans” like Alexis Lafreniere, Braden Schneider, Will Cuylle, and Juuso Parssinen, and put the focus where we want, on the next wave of Rangers youngesters.

Noah Laba: Stock Up

NHL: Minnesota Wild at New York Rangers
Brad Penner-Imagn Images

Noah Laba is the gold standard this season among the Rangers top young players and prospects. Already a favorite of coach Mike Sullivan, the 22-year-old rookie just gets better by the day. Laba’s the anchor in the middle of the third line, playing a committed 200-foot game, averaging more than 13 minutes TOI, and contributing eight points (four points, four assists). His compete level is never in question, and his maturity on and off the ice stands out. He has the makings of being a lineup staple for years to come. So, yes, his stock is definitely up.

Brennan Othmann: Stock down

NHL: Preseason-New York Islanders at New York Rangers
Danny Wild-Imagn Images

After underwhelming in training camp and failing to make New York’s opening-night roster, Brennan Othmann’s stock continues to sink within the organization. So much so, that Othmann trade rumors are a thing, with other teams trying to buy low on the 2021 first-round pick. Sullivan is no fan of Othmann’s defensive play nor effort, and that’s a big reason the forward spent most of the season with Hartford of the American Hockey League. Othmann has eight points (two goals, six assists) in 16 AHL games, continuing his underwhelming trend. He was recalled twice by the Rangers, but played only one late October game.

Gabe Perreault: Stock Up

NHL: Nashville Predators at New York Rangers
Brad Penner-Imagn Images

Like Othmann, Gabe Perreault is another first-round pick (2023) who failed to crack the opening-night roster on Broadway. The difference is that Perreault’s a rookie pro developing nicely in the minors. The 20-year-old leads Hartford with 10 goals and 17 points in 17 games, playing important minutes on the top line. Perreault has a pair of two-goal games in his past three outings, and earned AHL Player of the Week honors earlier this season. Perreault played three games with the Rangers in mid-November, and picked up his first NHL point, assisting on a Lafreniere power-play goal against the Nashville Predators. As Sullivan noted, the kid has things to work on and must get stronger physically. But his stock remains on the rise, for sure.

Dylan Garand: Stock Down

NHL: Preseason-New York Islanders at New York Rangers
Jessica Alcheh-Imagn Images

Handed the reins to be Hartford’s No. 1 goalie this season, presumably as a run-up to one day soon becoming Igor Shesterkin’s back up with the Rangers when Jonathan Quick decides to retire, Dylan Garand hasn’t exactly taken off with the opportunity. The 23-year-old, an AHL All-Star last season, is 4-6-2 with a 2.88 goals-against average and .903 save percentage, though played better of late. When Quick landed on IR recently, the Rangers recalled Garand. But Sullivan elected to start Shesterkin in every game, including both ends of a back-to-back set, showing little confidence in Garand, who’s yet to make his NHL debut. As of today, Garand’s stock is down, but that certainly can change moving forward.

Scott Morrow: Stock Even

NHL: New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators
David Kirouac-Imagn Images

For most of the first two months, Scott Morrow’s stock was on the decline. A gifted offensive defenseman, Morrow struggled at both ends of the rink with Hartford, and received little opportunity when called up to the Rangers. But the 23-year-old acquired in the K’Andre Miller trade this past summer found his footing the past four games with the Rangers. He’s been solid on the third defense pair since Adam Fox landed on LTIR, holding his own against elite opponents like the Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, and Vegas Golden Knights. The next step is for him to earn more trust defensively and begin producing more points, the true strength of his game.

Matthew Robertson: Stock Up

NHL: New York Rangers at Vegas Golden Knights
Stephen R. Sylvanie-Imagn Images

You’d be hard pressed to find a young player in the Rangers organization who improved their stock more than Matthew Robertson the past year or so. Two summers ago, it was a surprise the Rangers offered Robertson the qualifying offer. But he turned things around in his fourth pro season in 2024-25 with Hartford, made his NHL debut late in the season, and landed with the Rangers as one of their seven d-men out of training camp. He got an opportunity through injury early in the season, and now won’t relinquish his spot on the left side of the third defense pair. The 24-year-old averages more than 16 minutes TOI over 22 games, and though there’s room for improvement, he’s a pleasant surprise and his stock is on the upswing.

Brett Berard – Stock Even

NHL: New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators
David Kirouac-Imagn Images

We will call Brett Berard’s stock even, since he’s maintained a spot on the third line the past few weeks. The 23-year-old brings plenty of speed and energy to the Rangers lineup. But if Berard doesn’t start producing — he’s pointless in eight games — he easily could wind up back in Hartford, where he began the season.

Hartford Wolf Pack Weekly: Gabe Perreault continues to shine as AHL rookie https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/hartford-wolf-pack-gabe-perreault-shines-ahl-rookie Mon, 08 Dec 2025 23:32:44 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=473606 The Hartford Wolf Pack’s season high three game winning streak ended this past weekend, when they split a pair of games. The New York Rangers AHL affiliate enters this week, winners in five of their past eight games.

Last weekend featured a 5-2 win against Springfield on Friday. The Wolf Pack’s first line led the charge with three point performances from Gabe Perreault (two goals, one assist) and Justin Dowling (three assists). Jaroslav Chmelař recorded two assists.

The Wolf Pack followed up with a 6-2 loss to Bridgeport on Saturday. Brennan Othmann scored his second goal in four games, and Dowling also scored to extend his point-streak to three games (one goal, five assists).

The sixth-place Wolf Pack (8-10-4-0, 20 points) look to build on their recent strong play with three games this week.

Hartford Wolf Pack News-n-Notes

Welcome back

The Hartford defense corps is about to get a boost with the return of two injured veterans. Brandon Scanlin, who sustained an injury during training camp and hasn’t played yet this season, cleared waivers on Sunday and returned to practice with the Wolf Pack. Scanlin played 206 games with the Wolf Pack, recording 46 points (20 goals, 26 assists), the previous four seasons.

Blake Hillman, who sustained an upper-body injury Nov. 15, is now officially day to day and close to a lineup return. He was initially week to week. Hillman was playing his best hockey before the injury, and had five points (two goals, three assists) in 12 games.

Gabe Perreault continues to shine in rookie AHL season

Though the Rangers are happy to let Perreault marinade in the minors as he matures physically and as a player, the 20-year-old forward may not be long for Hartford. Perreault has 17 points (10 goals, seven assists) in 17 games, and recently recorded six points (four goals, two assists) in a three-game point streak that included consecutive multi-goal outings.

New York’s first-round pick (No. 23 overall) in the 2023 NHL Draft leads the Wolf Pack in goals, points, point-per-game (1.00), and plus-minus (+10). Perreault is tied for fourth among AHL rookies in goals, and tied for eighth in points.

Though he only has one assist in three games with the Rangers this season, Perreault continues to knock on their door, showing he’s ready for another crack at it in the NHL

Dylan Garand sharp in Hartford return

Dylan Garand returned to Hartford after serving as Igor Shesterkin’s backup for three games in New York. The 23-year-old goalie still hasn’t made his NHL debut, and didn’t play at all over a 12-day span until his start Friday back in the AHL.

Garand looked sharp, though, stopping 34 of 36 shots in the win against Springfield. He was instrumental in a game where the Thunderbirds pushed hard for a comeback, and made a string of impressive saves.

Initially given the night off on Saturday against Bridgeport, Garand replaced Callum Tung for the second and third periods. Tung, who faced 12 shots, conceded three goals in the first period before he was pulled. Coach Grant Potulny attempted to spark Hartford with the switch, and Garand finished with 21 saves on 23 shots in relief.

Garand is 4-6-2 with a 2.88 goals-against average and .903 save percentage for Hartford this season after his strong play last weekend.

Justin Dowling playing big role for Wolf Pack

Justin Dowling — Photo courtesy Hartford Wolf Pack

Signed by the Rangers to a two-year contract on July 7, Dowling has 16 points (five goals, 11 assists) in 21 games with Hartford, and been a mentor for Perreault, his young linemate. The 35-year-old forward leads the Wolf Pack in assists, is second in points, and tied for fourth in goals.

Potulny leans on the veteran, who played last season with the New Jersey Devils, deploying him as the Wolf Pack’s No. 1 center. As a result, Dowling created strong chemistry with Perreault, and other young forwards given opportunities on the line, like Othmann and Chmelař. Dowling’s experience (152 NHL, 594 AHL, and 60 ECHL games) is a major asset for the Wolf Pack.

Dowling’s last full season in the AHL was 2023-24. He is on pace to exceed his totals from that season (40 points).

Gabe Perreault heroics lift Wolf Pack to comeback victory https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/gabe-perreault-two-goal-game-hartford-victory Sun, 30 Nov 2025 17:10:34 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=473187 Gabe Perreault recorded the first two-goal game of his professional career, helping the Hartford Wolf Pack rally for a 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Monsters on Saturday night. The New York Rangers top prospect started a comeback from 2-0 down in the third period and capped it by scoring the game-winning goal with 61 seconds remaining in regulation.

Perreault’s clutch performance was a bright spot on a bleak day for the Rangers organization. Back in New York, the Rangers put forth a gruesome effort in a 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. In addition, Adam Fox sustained an scary upper-body injury, and there’s concern over his status moving forward.

So, Perreault’s heroics with New York’s AHL affiliate stood out even more. The 20-year-old forward displayed a lightning-quick release, when he found open space and scored a 4-on-4 goal at 11:56 of the third period to cut the Hartford deficit to 2-1.

The rejuvenated Wolf Pack scored on their next shift, when Trey Fix-Wolansky scored his ninth goal just nine seconds after Perreault got them on the board. Fix-Wolansky buried a rebound after Jaroslav Chmelar’s wraparound try was denied.

Cleveland took a penalty at 18:40 of the third period, and Perreault made sure to make them pay for the high-sticking transgression. It took 19 seconds before Perreault snapped a power-play shot from between the circles into the back of the net — another quick release — at 18:59.

That was Perreault’s first power-play goal of the season, and eighth overall. He’s tied for fifth among AHL rookies in goal scoring. His shooting percentage is an impressive 32 percent (eight goals on 25 shots), though the Wolf Pack and Rangers would love to see him shoot more.

Gabe Perreault continues impressive rookie AHL season with Hartford

Gabe Perreault — Photo courtesy Hartford Wolf Pack

Perreault leads Hartford in scoring with 14 points in 15 games, and his plus/minus is a team-best plus-10. Earlier in the season, Perreault had a four-game point streak and won AHL Player of the Week honors.

The 2023 first-round draft pick picked up his first NHL point in a three-game recall with the Rangers in early November, assisting on an Alexis Lafreniere power-play goal in a 6-2 win against the Nashville Predators on Nov. 10. However, Rangers coach Mike Sullivan didn’t fully trust Perreault defensively, and so the youngster’s ice time dropped before New York sent him back to the minors.

After he returned to Hartford, Perreault was pointless in two games. But since then he’s got four points (three goals, one assists) in four games and is back to driving the Wolf Pack offense.

And Hartford’s responded to his return, winning four of six games, including sweeping the two-game set this weekend in Cleveland.

Hartford Wolf Pack Weekly: Dylan Roobroeck heats up; losing skid ends https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/hartford-wolf-pack-losing-streak-ends-dylan-roobroeck Wed, 19 Nov 2025 19:07:44 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=472421 The Hartford Wolf Pack snapped their seven-game losing streak (0-3-4-0) Tuesday morning, when they defeated the Springfield Thunderbirds 3-2 in overtime. Captain Casey Fitzgerald scored the OT winner and added an assist. Brett Berard and Justin Dowling each had two points (one goal, one assist) in the much-needed win.

Despite their recent struggles, the Wolf Pack are tied for sixth-place (4-7-4-0, 12 points) with the Bridgeport Islanders for the final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division.

The Wolf Pack’s offense received a welcome boost when the New York Rangers assigned Gabe Perreault to Hartford on Sunday. He reunited with Dowling and Jaroslav Chmelař on the top line, after picking up his first NHL point (assist) in three games with the Rangers. Perreault still leads Hartford with 10 points, and is tied for the team lead with five goals.

Scott Morrow was called up to New York on Sunday, when Perreault was reassigned to the minors. The 23-year-old defenseman made his Rangers debut in a 2-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, after he recorded two points (one goal, one assist) in 11 games with Hartford. Morrow is on New York’s three-game road trip out west, but was a healthy scratch Tuesday when Will Borgen returned to the lineup for a 3-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Veteran goalie Spencer Martin signed a two-year contract with the Rangers last week, and will mentor Dylan Garand and also provide depth. The 30-year old appeared in 14 games with CSKA Moscow this season, posting a 5-6-0 record, 2.69 goals-against average, and .905 save percentage.

Hartford Wolf Pack News-n-Notes

Dylan Roobroeck heating up

Second-year forward Dylan Roobroeck is heating up. After a slow start, Roobroeck, a sixth round pick (No. 178) in the 2023 NHL Draft by the Rangers, has seven points (five goals, two assists) in his past 10 games. He is tied for the team lead in goals (five) with Perreault and Trey Fix Wolansky, after leading Hartford with 20 last season. The 21-year-old has eight points (five goals, three assists) and is tied for fourth on the team in scoring, with Berard.

The 6-foot-7 forward’s production is welcome at a time when Hartford is struggling to score (34 goals, tied for 24th out of 32 AHL teams). Hartford coach Grant Potulny put Roobroeck on the second line with Anton Blidh and Brennan Othmann, and also on the second power-play unit (with Othmann, Fix-Wolansky, Bryce McConnell-Barker, and Connor Mackey), where he’s scored three power-play goals.

Roobroeck had 34 points (20 goals, 14 assists) in 2024-25, and is on pace to surpass those numbers.

Penalty kill woes are back

Originally a bright spot for Hartford, the penalty kill was best in the AHL on Nov. 7, operating at 89.5 percent (34-for-38). Now, Hartford’s penalty kill dropped to 21st in the league (79.7 percent; 51-for-64). The Wolf Pack conceded 11 goals down a player in the past eight games.

A lack of discipline and continued parade to the penalty box is reminiscent of last season, when the Wolf Pack failed to reach the Calder Cup Playoffs. Hartford’s been short-handed 64 times (third most in AHL) through 15 games. And that’s costing them late in games again. Hartford’s been outscored 15-8 in the third period this season, with eight of those goals against scored with the Wolf Pack on the PK.

Sloppy play could cost Grant Potulny his job

In addition to taking too many penalties and a struggling penalty kill, the Wolf Packlook like an uninspired team far too often this season. Sloppy, dispirited play is a hallmark this season, and Potulny stated that there’s been signs of “quitting” by the Wolf Pack players.

The New York Post reported that Potulny was ushered into a postgame meeting with Hartford general manager Ryan Martin recently. So, it’s clear that the Rangers are none too happy with their AHL affiliate, and, perhaps, with the coach.

Hartford’s losing streak was paved with costly mistakes. On Nov 1 against Lehigh Valley, Garand fumbled the puck in overtime and the Phantoms scored into an empty net. Then on Nov. 7 against Laval, the Rocket converted a key power-play goal as Hartford was out-shot 17-8 in the third. On Nov. 8 against Belleville, Hartford lost the game with five seconds left by allowing a short-handed goal.

The Wolf Pack didn’t quit Tuesday. They trailed 2-0 after two periods, and were considerably outplayed in that span. But they scored twice in the third period, and sealed their first win in weeks on Fitzgerald’s clutch goal.

Perhaps Hartford can carry some positive momentum into this weekend.

  • Defenseman Blake Hillman sustained an upper-body injury and is week to week
  • Goaltender Dylan Garand is week to week with an upper-body injury

  • Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is 12-3-1-0 for 25 points. They are first in the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference. The Penguins are tied for first overall in the AHL with the Colorado Eagles.

Top Rangers prospect learns ‘this is a man’s league,’ heads back to AHL https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/gabe-perreault-learn-lessons-assigned-ahl-hartford Mon, 17 Nov 2025 14:43:08 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=472390 Gabe Perreault’s second tour of duty with the New York Rangers didn’t last long. The question now is when the next one will come.

One week after calling up the 20-year-old forward from Hartford of the American Hockey League in hopes he could give the offense a spark, the Rangers sent Perreault back to the minors Sunday, calling up defenseman Scott Morrow.

With the Rangers struggling to score at home, coach Mike Sullivan put Perreault on the top line with J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad and used him on the second power-play unit against the Nashville Predators on Nov. 10. Perreault responded by recording his first NHL point, the primary assist on Alexis Lafreniere’s power-play goal in a 6-3 victory, their first of the season at Madison Square Garden.

But that was just about the only highlight for Perreault, New York’s first-round pick (No. 23 overall) in the 2023 NHL Draft. He was demoted to the third line, saw limited touches and got another lesson in how difficult life can be for talented-but-smallish (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) forwards. He had one assist and two shots on goal in the three games, and averaged 13:09 of ice time – but less than 13 minutes in each of the last two.

“This isn’t an easy league,” assistant coach David Quinn said Sunday after the Rangers fell to 1-7-1 at the Garden with a 2-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings. “He’s got an awful lot of talent, and he’s got a bright future in this league, but this is a man’s league.”

Perreault signed with the Rangers on March 31 after his college team, Boston College, was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament. He dressed for five games in April but was scoreless, finishing minus-1, with an average TOI of 14:26.

He played well during the preseason, but Sullivan and his staff felt Perreault would be better off getting more ice time and playing top-six minutes in Hartford.

“Obviously, I think Gabe has NHL talent. I think that’s on display,” Sullivan said during the preseason. “He’s a really talented kid and I think he’s a terrific hockey player. He’s young, and in my experience of coaching young players like that, a lot of it is just about the thankless jobs – knowing when to put a puck deep, defensive responsibilities, awareness in the defensive zone and then strength, just being strong on puck battles. He sees it extremely well.

“My impression of him, in just watching him, is that he’s an NHL player in the making.”

Gabe Perreault returned to Hartford after 3 games with Rangers: ‘part of the growing process’

Perreault found his stride after a slow start in the minors. He was the AHL Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 2  after putting up six points (three goals, three assists) and finishing plus-5 in three games.

“I think it was really good for me to go down there, play a lot of minutes, work on a lot of the little things that I needed to work on,” Perreault said after his recall. “Wall play, defensive details, little stuff like that — and also tried to work on my strengths at the same time, so a mix of all those things.”

Perreault was leading the Wolf Pack in scoring with 10 points (five goals, five assists) in nine games when he was called up. He’s still Hartford’s leading scorer despite missing five of their games.

But instead of flying to Las Vegas with the Rangers on Monday for their Tuesday night game against the Golden Knights, the son of former NHL center Yanic Perreault will be on the ice at XL Center in Hartford for an 11 a.m. game against the Springfield Thunderbirds.

Quinn, who split the coaching duties with fellow assistant Joe Sacco on Sunday because Sullivan was absent for personal reasons, is optimistic that Perreault will succeed in the NHL. But he believes there will be some growing pains along the way for the talented youngster.

“Gabe did some good things while he was up here,” Quinn explained. “But when Gabe’s here, he plays on the top two lines, and when you [do], you play against everyone’s top [defensive] pairings and everybody’s best players. That can get a little overwhelming for you physically and with the pace.

“We just felt like this was part of the growing process and the development process for him. Give him an opportunity to come here, play meaningful games, and now he’s going back down, and I’m sure this experience will be beneficial to his development.”

Scott Morrow could make Rangers debut against Red Wings after AHL recall https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/rangers-recall-scott-morrow-send-gabe-perreault-hartford Sun, 16 Nov 2025 17:32:10 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=472343 The New York Rangers moved out one top prospect and replaced him with another on the roster Sunday, when they recalled defenseman Scott Morrow from Hartford of the American Hockey League and sent down forward Gabe Perreault.

It’s difficult to imagine that the Rangers called up Morrow just to sit him when they host the Detroit Red Wings at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night. Right-shot defenseman Will Borgen missed New York’s 2-1 shootout win in Columbus over the Blue Jackets on Saturday with an upper-body injury. Assuming he’s out again Sunday, that opens the door for Morrow to play his first game with the Rangers.

Matthew Robertson drew into the lineup against the Blue Jackets, and played his off (right) side on the third defense pair, with pretty mixed results. The Rangers were out-shot 7-4 with Robertson on the ice 5v5 Saturday and out-chanced in high-danger areas 3-1. Their expected goals for with Robertson skating 5v5 was 24.85 percent, per Natural Stat Trick.

The other possibility is that another defenseman is hurt, though that didn’t appear to be an issue Saturday. Rangers coach Mike Sullivan likely will provide more clarity when he speaks with reporters ahead of the Red Wings game.

Morrow is a talented puck mover and a right shot, who could slot in next to Urho Vaakanainen or Robertson on the third defense pair. He has one goal and one assist in 11 games with Hartford, after a solid training camp and preseason with the Rangers.

“I think he’s a big, strong kid,” Sullivan said about the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder near the end of camp. “I think he skates well and has some offensive instincts. He has the ability to run a power play up top. I think he’s getting better defending, and that’s an area I’m fairly confident our coaching staff can help him there.”

The 23-year-old didn’t play Saturday in Hartford’s seventh straight loss, 5-2 to Laval. That could be a sign that the Rangers already made the decision to recall him.

The Rangers acquired Morrow in the K’Andre Miller trade with the Carolina Hurricanes this past offseason. The 2021 second-round pick who starred collegiately at UMASS has six points (one goal, five assists) in 16 NHL games with the Hurricanes. He also recorded 39 points (13 goals, 26 assists) in 52 games with AHL Chicago last season.

Morrow was recalled in mid-October by the Rangers when Borgen was banged up and Carson Sousy already was out injured. However, Borgen was able to play and Morrow soon after was sent back to the minors.

Rangers send Gabe Perreault to minors after 3-game NHL stint

To clear room for Morrow on the 23-player active roster, the Rangers assigned Perreault to Hartford. The 20-year-old played three games this week — each a victory — but saw diminishing ice time and opportunity after a string season debut in a 6-3 win over the Nashville Predators on Monday.

The 2023 first-round pick skated on a line with J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad, secured time on the second power-play unit, and logged more than 14 minutes TOI. He also picked up his first NHL point, an assist on Alexis Lafreniere’s power-play goal against the Predators.

But his ice time decreased and he failed to record a shot on goal in consecutive road wins against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Blue Jackets. During the course of each of those games, Perreault was replaced by Will Cuylle in the top six

“We’ve seen some really good things he’s done. Obviously he’s got real good offensive instincts, sees the play really well. He thinks the game on a high level,” Sullivan told Vince Mercgoliano of The Athletic on Saturday. “I think where his opportunity for growth and improvement is really just strength on the puck and a little bit of quickness. And I think they go hand in hand.

“As a young player, it’s just physical maturity. The speed of the game and the size and the strength of the players at this level is second to none. For most young players, that’s one of the challenges in making the jump to being an impact player at this level.”

At the time of his recall, Perreault led Hartford with five goals and 10 points in nine games. Either Juuso Parssinen or Jonny Brodzinski will take his lineup spot against the Red Wings.

Why BC coach believes Rangers’ Gabe Perreault will be ‘impactful NHL player’ https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/gabe-perreault-impactful-nhl-player-greg-brown Fri, 14 Nov 2025 13:25:42 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=472183 Under the lights of Madison Square Garden on Nov. 10, Gabe Perreault slipped back into the New York Rangers lineup with the calm assurance of a player whose rise was building for months.

Only days earlier, he was in the minors, wearing the navy and silver of the Hartford Wolf Pack, driving their offense with a team-high five goals and 10 points. Perreault earned AHL Player of the Week honors and sharpened every part of his game, just as the Rangers hoped when he was among the final cuts after a strong preseason showing at training camp.

When the Rangers recalled him Nov. 9, it was a move that reflected just how naturally his game had risen to meet the next level. That became clear in his season debut against the Nashville Predators, when coach Mike Sullivan placed the 20-year-old on the top line alongside Mika Zibanejad and J.T. Miller, and gave him minutes on the second power-play unit.

Perreault didn’t need much time to settle in. He matched the pace and the moment quickly, picking up his first NHL point with an assist on Alexis Lafreniere’s power-play goal in a 6–3 win that snapped New York’s seven-game home skid (0-6-1) and helped bring life to an offense that entered the night tied for last in goals per game. It was a glimpse of what he can offer — and a reminder that moments like this are years in the making.

For Perreault, none of it appeared accidental. The poise in his touches, the vision behind his decisions, the calm threaded through each shift — all of it reflected years of groundwork. And much of that foundation was formed long before this recall, in the rinks and classrooms of Boston College, under the guidance of the people who understood how to bring out the best in him.

The making of the moment for Gabe Perreault

The roots of Perreault’s game run back years, to the places where his talent first took hold. At the U.S. National Team Development Program, he wasn’t simply another top prospect, he was the pulse of a line that reshaped junior hockey. His game took form through precision and creativity, through a calm command that turned speed into rhythm and vision into inevitability.

From there, the trajectory only continued upward. In his draft year, Perreault shattered the NTDP single-season points record with 132, surpassing Auston Matthews’ mark of 117 from 2014-15. Before arriving at Boston College, Perreault helped lead Team USA to gold at the 2023 IIHF Under-18 World Championship, finishing as the tournament’s assist leader.

Greg Brown, head coach of Boston College and one of the architects of the program’s modern resurgence, tracked Perreault long before the talented youngster was selected in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft or arrived on campus.

“Gabe was a top player at the NTDP so he was on everyone’s radar,” Brown told Forever Blueshirts. “His intelligence, playmaking ability, and competitiveness would have been a welcome addition to any program. We are fortunate to have a history of creative offensive players who played a similar style to Gabe. We also had his two NTDP linemates (Ryan Leonard and Will Smith) already committed to Boston College. They not only were a dynamic line, but close friends as well. Their chemistry on and off the ice was exceptional.”

Boston College wasn’t just another stop; it was the ideal environment for Perreault’s skill set — a program built on high expectations, structure, and the kind of competitive edge that sharpens talent rather than stifling it.

“The only question we had was how long it would take Gabe, like all freshmen, to adjust to playing against faster, stronger, older players in college,” Brown explained. “The answer was not long at all. We put their NTDP line back together in the third intra-squad scrimmage of the preseason and it took them one shift to move down the ice and score a goal. They didn’t spend a lot of time apart the rest of the season.”

Their chemistry became part of BC’s fabric. That line helped drive Boston College to the 2024 NCAA Frozen Four, where BC ultimately lost to Denver 2-0 in the championship game.

Though BC didn’t reach the Frozen Four in 2025 after Smith turned pro, Perreault’s two-year production was obvious — 108 points in 73 games, All-American honors, a Hobey Baker nomination. And the less glamorous parts of his game evolved just as quickly.

“Like most teenage freshmen, an important area of Gabe’s growth was going to come from time in the weight room,” Brown explained. “More strength would help his speed as well as his ability to extend plays in tight quarters. Gabe was diligent and got stronger and heavier in his two years at BC. On the ice, Gabe showed good growth in puck management. He was able to reduce his turnovers while still creating quality offensive chances at a high rate.”

And through all of it, Perreault carried himself with an ease that made the daily grind feel lighter. The youngest son of former NHL forward Yanic Perreault and the brother of fellow pro Jacob Perreault, he grew up surrounded by the game and the weight that can come with legacy.

“If Gabe felt any burden from expectations, you would never know it,” Brown recalled. “He was almost always smiling and enjoying his time at the rink. I would guess that Yanic and July did a great job defusing any family pressures.”

NCAA Hockey: Frozen Four

That looseness never dulled his edge; if anything, it made the switch more striking when practices or games demanded more.

“Gabe would be having fun with his teammates and then be able to turn on his competitiveness in an instant. He would be laughing and chirping guys in practice and then raise the intensity immediately when a competitive drill or game started. It was fun to watch,” Brown explained.

He had a feel for when BC needed a shift in momentum, and he delivered it in the moments that mattered.

“Gabe was great at raising his competitiveness if things weren’t going well in a game,” Brown said. “He would try to change the momentum with a good defensive play or by delivering a check. He would battle no matter how the game was playing out. That’s a great quality in a player.”

Those plays stayed with Brown — not singular moments, but a collection of habits formed through instinct and understanding.

“I can recall numerous occasions of such plays,” Brown recounted. “He would dig in and catch opponents on the back check. He would deliver a hard check to an opponent if it was the right time. He had a great feel for the balance of a game and what was needed to sway that balance in our favor.”

Perreault’s big-game ability translated well to the international stage the past two years. He played a big role in helping the United States win consecutive gold medals at the 2024 and 2025 World Junior Championships, finishing with 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) in 14 games combined over the two tournaments.

BC coach believes Rangers have ‘team-first player’ with Gabe Perreault

For Brown, Perreault’s rise has always been about more than points. It’s the blend of ability and character — the part that can’t be taught — that set him apart long before the NHL came calling.

“Winning organizations in general have high quality people as well as great players,” Brown said. “Gabe fits both categories. He was a team-first player in the locker room and he was active in our community service events off the ice. He represented Boston College extremely well in his time with us.”

That assessment echoes now, miles from Chestnut Hill, as Perreault navigates hockey’s biggest stage with the same steadiness he showed in college. The habits built over years — the patience, the touch, the willingness to work without the puck — surface in each shift. Nothing forced. Nothing rushed. Just a young player carrying himself with the calm of someone who knows who he is.

Perreault signed his entry-level contract with the Rangers last spring. And though he didn’t record a point in five NHL games with them at the end of the season, Perreault certainly didn’t look out of place. After training with Patrick Kane, among others, this past summer, it looked like Perreault was ready for the big time this season.

He doesn’t need the spotlight to find him anymore; his game draws it naturally. The Garden knows it. The Rangers know it. Anyone watching can feel the presence he brings.

“I predict Gabe will be an impactful NHL player who will drive plays both in 5v5 and special teams,” Brown said. “He has the character and ability to be a valuable player in the NHL.”

Although roster decisions can shift quickly and Perreault could still return to Hartford, nothing in his play suggests he’s merely passing through. His shifts carry the poise of someone earning his place, not borrowing it.

Numbers hint at his potential, but the way he moves tells a fuller story — the steadiness in his stride, the subtle reads, the quiet command that threads through his game. Whatever comes next, the Rangers aren’t waiting on potential. They’re simply seeing what Greg Brown already knows.

Key Rangers takeaways after 6-3 win over Predators ends home losing skid https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/rangers-first-home-win-6-3-predators Tue, 11 Nov 2025 03:42:22 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=472029 Hey! Hey! Hey, Hey, Hey! Cue up the New York Rangers goal song and chalk up the Blueshirts’ first home-ice win of the season, a long-awaited 6-3 victory over the Nashville Predators at Madison Square Garden on Monday.

The Rangers (8-7-2) entered the night winless in their first seven home games (0-6-1). If that wasn’t mind-boggling and frustrating enough, they scored six goals in those seven games and were shut out five times.

But the Rangers had five different goal-scorers against the Predators, and Vincent Trocheck added two assists in his return to the lineup after missing 14 straight games due to an upper-body injury. That was plenty for the Rangers to hand the Predators (5-9-2) their fifth straight loss (0-3-2).

“The first seven games we didn’t like. We played some decent hockey, but couldn’t score, couldn’t win. It was good today to score a couple,” said Alexis Lafreniere, who had a season-high three points (one goal, two assists).

Artemi Panarin scored twice and Gabe Perreault picked up his first NHL point with an assist in his season debut after the 20-year-old was recalled from Hartford of the American Hockey League on Sunday.

Vladislav Gavrikov had a goal an an assist for the Rangers, who also received goals from Mika Zibanejad and Will Cuylle. Adam Fox contributed two assists, and Igor Shesterkin finished with 27 saves.

“I couldn’t be happier for the guys,” Rangers coach Mike Sullivan said postgame.

Rookie Matthew Wood scored twice on the power play as part of his first NHL hat trick for Nashville. Juuse Saros allowed five goals on 12 shots before he was pulled after the second period. Justus Annunen stopped five of six shots in the third period.

After leading on home ice for fewer than 12 minutes the entire season, the Rangers never trailed against the Predators. Zibanejad opened the scoring 10:39 into the game; and after the Predators pulled even less than six minutes later, Gavrikov put the home team ahead for good at 18:07 of the first period.

Zibanejad accepted a head-man feed from Fox, split the Predators’ defense and beat Saros with a forehand finish for his fifth goal of the season to get the party started at MSG. Nashville, though, tied things up with a power-play goal by Wood at 16:16; Shesterkin made two outstanding diving saves before the 20-year-old forward cashed in another rebound.

The Rangers had an answer, when Trocheck’s gorgeous spinning backhand pass set up Gavrikov’s goal through a Lafreniere screen 1:51 later to make it 2-1. It was a well-deserved lead after the Rangers out-chanced the Predators 8-2 at 5v5 in the opening period.

Somehow in a low-event second period, the Rangers managed to blow the game open. They scored three goals on four shots in the middle frame to extend their lead to 5-1.

Lafreniere took a pass from Perreault and motored toward the net from the left circle, finishing with a backhand shot through the five-hole of Saros for a power-play goal at 1:23.

If Saros wasn’t happy with himself after that goal, he must’ve been furious at 7:51 when Panarin’s long-range slap shot leaked through his pads.

The Rangers didn’t record another shot on goal until 12 minutes later, when Cuylle wired a shot high glove and just under the crossbar ay 19:50 to up the lead to 5-1. Noah Laba started the scoring play with a good defensive play at New York’s blue line, then made the pass to set up Cuylle off the rush at the other end.

It was a fairly sloppy third period for the Rangers, who were whistled for three consecutive penalties — two by Trocheck — in a span of 2:34 midway through the period. Shesterkin and Co. looked good on the PK until Wood ripped a left-wing clapper past the Rangers goalie at 12:48.

But Panarin answered back with an unassisted goal at 13:30 to restore New York’s four-goal lead. Wood finished off his hat trick with his sixth goal in the past seven games, this one at even strength, at 19:15.

With the first home win finally in the books, the Rangers hit the road for two straight, beginning Wednesday in Tampa Bay against the Lightning. The Rangers carry a League-best 7-1-1 road record into that contest.

Key takeaways after Rangers end winless skid at home with 6-3 victory over Predators

1. Reunited, and it feels so good

Sullivan didn’t overthink things, and that paid off handsomely Monday. With Trocheck back after a month-long injury absence, he reunited the 32-year-old center with long-time linemates Lafreniere and Panarin. They combined for seven points (three goals, four assists) and a plus-7 rating; Panarin had his first multiple-goal game of 2025-26, and Lafreniere had a three-point breakout.

Trocheck logged 16:57 TOI, including PK and power play time, took a few bumps, including an elbow to the face early on, and tied Cuylle for the team lead with six hits.

The line played a team-high 11:55 together at 5v5 and outscored the Predators 3-0 until Wood’s goal in the final minute. Per Natural Stat Trick, the Trocheck line out-chanced Nashville 6-2 and had an expected goals share of 66.71 percent.

2. The Kid looked alright

NHL: Nashville Predators at New York Rangers

Perreault played five games late last season after turning pro with the Rangers, and failed to record a point. Monday, he not only recorded his first NHL point with the primary assist on Lafreniere’s power-play goal, he nearly scored his first goal as well.

With Zibanejad tying up two defenders, Perreault hopped on a rebound in the slot 13 minutes into the first period, then went backhand-to-forehand before zipping a shot off the post. It was part of a strong season debut for the 2023 first-round pick, who led Hartford with five goals and 10 points in nine games before his recall.

Perreault logged 14:08 TOI overall, playing mostly with Zibanejad and J.T. Miller at even strength.

“It’s pretty cool. Playing with those two guys is pretty easy … thought we played pretty well overall,” Perreault said postgame.

3. ‘Big boost of confidence’ for Rangers

Forget that the Predators are not very good and that Saros had a rough night. The Rangers desperately needed a win at home, no matter the quality of the opponent. They got it by playing an exceptional first 40 minutes and getting contributions up and down a deeper lineup with the additions of Trocheck and Perreault.

Ten of New York’s 18 skaters recorded at least a point. Three of the four forward lines were in on at least one goal, and the fourth line was again a physical north-south force with the return of Adam Edstrom following a two-game injury absence.

Let’s not forget Gavrikov, who played a strong game at both ends — not only scoring his second goal of the season, but later breaking up a Nashville 3-on-1 with a perfectly-timed slide and good stick.

“The message has been, ‘Let’s continue to understand what that game looks like when we’re at our best,’ and we generate offense, we just haven’t scored as many goals. Tonight, we scored goals,” Sullivan explained. “Hopefully, that reinforces the process a little bit and just gives us that much more belief that if we play a certain way, we can compete with any team in this League. My hope is that we can use this win tonight as a big boost of confidence for the guys.”

Rangers coach discusses ‘balancing act’ after recall of Gabe Perreault https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/top-prospect-in-top-6-after-recall Mon, 10 Nov 2025 20:54:22 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=471989 The New York Rangers are winless on home ice (0-6-1) to begin the 2025-26 season. But they’ll try to flip the script when they host the struggling Nashville Predators on Monday night — and they’re hoping to get a spark from the top prospect in their organization, Gabe Perreault.

The Rangers recalled the 2023 first-round pick (No. 23 overall) on Sunday from their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. He’s expected to make his season debut against the Preds.

After a strong sophomore season for Boston College, Perreault signed an entry-level contract on March 31. He appeared in five NHL games before the end of the 2024-25 season without recording a point.

Perreault had a productive preseason that saw him put up two goals and four points in five games, but the Rangers elected to send him to Hartford to start the season, with coach Mike Sullivan citing a desire for him to hone his craft before returning to the NHL.

To his credit, it seems the 20-year-old carried a productive mindset regarding his one-month AHL stint.

“I think it was really good for me to go down there, play a lot of minutes, work on a lot of the little things that I needed to work on,” Perreault said during the pregame media availability. “Wall play, defensive details, little stuff like that — and also tried to work on my strengths at the same time, so a mix of all those things.”

The early returns were impressive. Perrault paced the Wolf Pack with five goals and 10 points in nine games.

Of late, he’s been nothing short of dominant. In his last four games, Perreault recorded four goals and eight points, helping him land AHL Player of the Week honors on Nov. 3.

“The reports are that he’s played really well, especially most recently,” Sullivan noted Monday. “I think there was a little bit of a slow start — I think that was kinda the whole group — but since then, I think Gabe’s game has evolved in a lot of ways. He’s had a number of games there now, and we’re hoping that he can bring that confidence to this group.”

Perreault managed two points (one goal, one assist) through his first five AHL games as the Wolf Pack stumbled to a 1-4-0 start. But as the team began to find its footing, so did Perreault, displaying the skill that made him one of the top forwards in collegiate hockey before turning pro.

The decision to call up Perreault at this stage of his career is no small matter.

The recent history of the Rangers is littered with failed top-10 first-round picks, ranging from complete busts like Lias Andersson (No. 7 overall in 2017) and Vitali Kravtsov (No. 9 overall in 2018), to the underwhelming production from 2020 No. 1 overall pick Alexis Lafreniere and 2019 No. 2 overall pick Kaapo Kakko, who was traded to the Seattle Kraken last December.

Externally, it appears Sullivan and general manager Chris Drury have made a concerted effort to change that narrative with Perreault, prioritizing his development and maturation. While that process required some seasoning in Hartford, the Rangers’ offensive struggles facilitated Perreault’s return to the NHL.

“That’s the balancing act,” Sullivan acknowledged. “Ideally, we were trying to give Gabe some time down there to build and develop his game, physically and otherwise, in the hopes that when he does get called to New York, he has the ability to be successful.”

Perreault joined Mika Zibanejad and J.T. Miller on the first line at practice, suggesting that he will immediately skate in a top-six role.

“He’s an offensive player that has really good instincts on that side of the puck, so our intention is to set him up for success so we can play to his strengths,” Sullivan said. “I don’t know that it makes a whole lot of sense to call a player up like that and put him in a bottom-six role.”

It’s a departure from the way the Blueshirts have handled top prospects. Notably, Lafreniere and Kakko both began their time on Broadway in bottom-six roles; Lafreniere didn’t land a consistent top-six spot until 2023-24, his fourth NHL season, and Kakko never got one before being traded.

“I think he’s a guy that potentially could help us if we can get the best version of him,” Sullivan said of the son of former NHL center Yanic Perreault. “It’s a great opportunity for him. We’re excited to watch him.”

Perreault said he was excited to play with two of the Rangers’ top veterans.

“It’s definitely good for my confidence,” he admitted. “I think obviously playing with two guys like that — I mean it makes it pretty easy on me, so y’know just try to make them better and give them the puck and good things will happen.”

Rangers vs. Predators: Lineups, storylines in Vincent Trocheck’s return https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/rangers-predators-game-preview-lineups-storylines-vincent-trocheck-lineup-return Mon, 10 Nov 2025 17:41:01 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=471872 Still seeking their first win on home ice this season, the New York Rangers have some serious lineup reinforcements for their game against the Nashville Predators on Monday at Madison Square Garden.

Vincent Trocheck returns after missing the past 14 games with an upper-body injury. Also, New York’s top prospect, Gabe Perreault, makes his season debut after the 20-year-old forward was recalled from Hartford of the American Hockey League on Sunday.

Each will start out in New York’s top six, which lengthens the Rangers’ lineup considerably. Trocheck, who has one assist in two games before the injury, will center longtime linemates Artemi Panarin and Alexis Lafreniere. Perreault, who leads Hartford with five goals and 10 points in nine games, steps into a prime spot on the top line with J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad.

Not only does that fortify, New York’s top two lines, but it strengthens the bottom six, as well. Will Cuylle joins Noah Laba and Taylor Raddysh to form a solid two-way third line.

The fourth line, though still missing Matt Rempe who’s out with an upper-body injury, gets Adam Edstrom back after a two-game absence and now includes veteran Conor Sheary, bumped down to play on a line centered by stalwart Sam Carrick.

The Rangers (7-7-2) certainly can use the good vibes and expected juice from the deeper, more skilled and balanced lineup, They’re 0-6-1 at MSG, the worst home record in the NHL. And the Rangers have scored six goals in their seven home games and were shut out five times, including 5-0 by the Islanders on Saturday.

It also doesn’t hurt that they host the struggling Predators (5-8-2) on Monday. The Predators are winless in their past four games (0-2-2) and have one victory since Oct. 26 (1-5-2). They lost a back and forth game to the Dallas Stars on Saturday, 5-4, the eighth time in their past nine games that the Predators allowed three goals or more.

This is also Nashville’s final game in North America before taking on the Pittsburgh Penguins twice in Sweden this weekend, part of the NHL Global Series.

3 storylines when Rangers host Predators

NHL: Nashville Predators at New York Rangers
Brad Penner-Imagn Images

1. Rangers expect ‘jolt’ from Vincent Trocheck’s return

All things considered, the Rangers survived Trocheck’s month-long absence pretty well. They were 6-6-2 after the 32-year-old center sustained his injury in the second game of the season against the Buffalo Sabres. Taking into account their winless skid at MSG, it’s even more impressive that the Rangers were at NHL-.500 without Trocheck, and speaks, of course, to their tremendous success on the road, where they are a League-best 7-1-1.

Trocheck is a letter-wearing veteran, respected and beloved by teammates, coaches and fans alike. He plays in every game situation, and averages nearly 21 minutes TOI per game during his three-plus years on Broadway. He’s as irreplaceable as anyone on the Rangers’ roster. So, yes, it’s a big deal that’s he’s back.

“I think he’ll give our team a jolt,” coach Mike Sullivan said after the morning skate. “I just think just his presence alone from a leadership standpoint means a lot to this group. The hockey side of it goes without saying, he’s a terrific hockey player, as we know. It’ll be nice to get him back.”

2. Rangers rookie lands prime spot

There’ll be no easing Perreault into things. He’s expected to play serious minutes at even strength alongside talented veteran forwards Miller and Zibanejad.

“Our intention is to try to set him up for success so he can play to his strengths. In other words, I don’t know that it makes a lot of sense to call up a player like that and put him in a bottom-six role,” Sullivan explained.

Perreault has produced at every stage of his career, though he was pointless in five games with the Rangers after he signed his entry-level contract late last season. He had a strong showing in training camp, and just seven days ago was named AHL Player of the Week. The Rangers believe he’s ready to slot into an important role right away.

“He’s a good playmaker, and he’s playing with two pretty good players,” the coach said. “I think Gabe will help those guys with his offensive instincts. I think he has the ability to get those guys the puck in the right areas.”

3. Another zero hero?

The Rangers and Predators split their season series in 2024-25, each side winning with a shutout. Jonathan Quick and the Rangers blanked the Predators 4-0 at MSG on March 2. That was after Juuse Saros led Nashville to a 2-0 home-ice win on Dec. 17.

Though the Predators have yet to record a shutout this season — nor be shut out in defeat — the Rangers have been involved in seven shutouts over their first 16 games this season. As noted above, they have five shutout losses on home ice; the Rangers also have a pair of shutouts of their own, one apiece by Igor Shesterkin and Quick.
