Chris Rutsch

The day after the American Hockey League’s season ended, the Rangers wasted no time in announcing that Wolf Pack head coach Keith McCambridge has been relieved of his coaching duties along with assistant coach Joe Mormina.

Considering what has unfolded these last two seasons under the leadership of Keith McCambridge and Joe Mormina, I am not surprised this has happened. The Wolf Pack finished last once again, and have struggled mightily with continuing to develop the organization’s prospects.

Keith McCambridge entered the Rangers organization in the summer of 2016 as an assistant coach with Hartford. Then, in the summer of 2017, he was shifted to become the head coach. He had promise considering his good track record as a coach with the St. John’s IceCaps and Manitoba Moose. However, the opposite has happened here and did not work out.

The Rangers are in the midst of their rebuild and must put top priority in having a quality AHL coaching staff. Prospect development starts in Hartford and cultivating a winning culture will do nothing but help in developing promising prospects. Nothing beats homegrown talent.

Wolf Pack Weekly: Hartford in Similar Situation as Last Season https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-analysis/wolf-pack-weekly-hartford-in-similar-situation-as-last-season https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-analysis/wolf-pack-weekly-hartford-in-similar-situation-as-last-season#comments Wed, 13 Feb 2019 15:32:47 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=377318

The Wolf Pack are in similar territory as last season. After doing better in the first half of the season, the group tapered off as the season progressed. Hartford is healthier and has dealt with fewer call-ups from New York this season. But after the club snapped a nine-game losing streak, the Pack found themselves back in the loss column to finish last week.

As we chug along February and approach the NHL trade deadline, Chris Drury and Rangers management must look ahead and prepare for the 2019-2020 season in Hartford. Getting players for the upcoming season for the Wolf Pack at the deadline is never a bad idea, especially considering this season is a washout unless the club goes on a lengthy winning streak.

Hartford is preparing for three games this week. The eighth-place Wolf Pack have a record of 20-25-3-3 for 46 points. In the conference, the group is last at 16 and is 29th in the league.

Discussion Time: Who’s to Blame?

Head coach Keith McCambridge has looked questionable as the season continued. Considering a better roster than last season, what is the issue? A trend that I have noticed is his unusual coaching during games is pulling goalies multiple times when the game is already over. For instance, during Friday’s 6-0 loss to the Syracuse Crunch, with about two minutes remaining in the contest, Hartford was down 4-0. He pulled the goalie and Syracuse scored. Then again moments later to make the game 6-0 Syracuse. Lias Andersson was on the ice late in the game, looking crushed mentally and lost. That is a red flag to me because one of your top prospects in Hartford should not look that way.

The question I have with Keith McCambridge is his actions. He could be hurting the prospects in Hartford with his actions. There is a noticeable regression than progression with some of the players. This was not the first time he pulled the goalie when the game was over. That concept seems unusual when you are down more than four goals.

Another eye-opener is benching your players during games. When the Pack are down and need a spark, often times he puts players such as Peter Holland (your leading scorer), Vinni Lettieri, or other prospects at the bottom in hopes to change the game. I see where Keith McCambridge comes from, however, I do not think that is the best way to go about games. The league is for development, not benching your top players.

Chris Drury has had his hands tied. As the Wolf Pack general manager, he is unable to do much on the fly. He can sign players, release, or trade for AHL players. However, the issue becomes how will he enhance the roster. He has not found the winning formula for the Wolf Pack. He has to work hand in hand with Jeff Gorton as well. After this season is completed, I am sure Chris Drury will be looking at everything in Hartford.

Hartford’s Reputation

The reputation for AHL teams also plays a role in players taking a liking to the organization, especially from an AHL veteran’s standpoint. You must have a likable coach in place, as well as a team that is known to win. Unfortunately, Hartford lacks a good reputation from the winning standpoint. When opposing teams enter the XL Center, they know Hartford is an easy opponent and will not be nervous facing them. Then, when the Pack are on the road, teams consider them as an easy opponent. This reputation began in the early stages of 2012. Five of last six seasons produced no playoffs, and from a player’s standpoint, Hartford is not an attractive destination.

John Gilmour Expected to Break Franchise Record

Defenseman John Gilmour’s 16 goals this season has crept him close to the all-time record for goals by a Wolf Pack defenseman. The record is held by Andrew Hutchinson, who netted 18 tallies back in the 2007-08 season. As the Rangers prospect’s contract is up, I expect him to return. He deserves it.

Also, on a side note, John Gilmour is second in the league in points by a defenseman. He has 16 goals, 21 assists for 37 points. He is two points behind the leader Zach Redmond of Rochester with 39 points. In addition, John Gilmour is second in AHL defenseman with goals.

Pack Tracks

  • Peter Holland has goals in back to back games. He snapped a three-game drought. He still leads the team in points at 47.
  • Hartford has given up 180 goals in 51 games. That ranks them last in the Eastern Conference. They are ranked 29th in the league in goals against.
  • The power play continues to be “middle of the pack” in the league. Hartford is ranked 15th, converting at 18%. The group has given up 10 short-handed goals as well.
  • The penalty kill is in the bottom portion of the league. The penalty kill is ranked 20th in the league, killing 80.6% of penalties. The group has scored six goals while down a man.
  • Hartford has 25 games remaining in their season, 13 at home and 12 away.

Rangers Dealt Marek Mazanec

Tuesday afternoon featured a trade with Wolf Pack goalie Marek Mazanec. You can read about the trade here.

The move was unexpected as Hartford’s goalie situation was not the issue this season. I believe the move is for the future. The Pack has struggled this season and perhaps the Rangers are turning the page on this season in Hartford.

Brandon Halverson has played well in Maine and is now expected to stay in Hartford for the remainder of the season.

Upcoming Games

Wednesday, February 13th vs Toronto Marlies (Maple Leafs) at 7 pm, XL Center

  • This is the second and final meeting of the season series between both organizations. The first meeting was in Toronto on October 20th as the Pack dropped a 3-2 decision.
  • Toronto has points in their last six games and has won six of their last ten outings.
  • The Marlies are third in the North Divsion with a record of 25-16-5-3 for 58 points.

Saturday, February 16th vs Bridgeport Sound Tigers (Islanders) at 7 pm, Webster Bank Arena

  • This is the tenth and final meeting between both organizations. Hartford is 4-3-1-1 in the season series.
  • Bridgeport is second in the Atlantic Division with a record of 28-18-4-2 for 62 points. The group enters the week winning two straight.
  • Last time out, Hartford lost in the shootout against Bridgeport on February 4th in Hartford. The Pack built themselves a 2-0 lead only to have it washed away.

Sunday, February 17th vs Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh) at 3 pm, XL Center

  • This is the fourth of six meetings against the Penguins. Hartford is 1-2 in the season series. All three prior meetings were during the first two weeks of November.
  • The Penguins are sixth in the Atlantic Division with a record of 24-21-4-1 for 53 points. Hartford is behind Wilkes-Barre/Scranton by seven points.
  • The Penguins are 5-5 in their last ten outings entering the week.

The Wolf Pack continue their skid as they enter the early stages of February. The group has lost seven straight and is 29th in the American Hockey League. Ouch. Who would have thought the group would creep this low? I did not, considering the roster that was provided. As we enter this week, with four games on tap, Hartford is 19-23-3-2 for 43 points. That ranks them eighth in the Atlantic Division.

Hartford Falls After Trading Away Captain

The group is 1-7 since the captain, Cole Schneider, departed from the organization through a trade. Since the trade, the Wolf Pack have not looked the same. When you trade away one of the team’s better forwards, second in points at the time, usually the gamble may not be worth it. Well, we have the results after the trade, and the Pack’s plan has seemingly backfired.

I am not knocking on Connor Brickley because he’s a different type of player. We are comparing apples to oranges here. Chris Drury wanted grit and, unfortunately, Milwaukee won the trade, value wise. Perhaps the organization could have moved another forward for Connor Brickley.

The players and Keith McCambridge had some interesting commentary on the trade. Remarks from the group on Howlings.net regarding the trade raises eyebrows.

“I told them he was a part of our family starting from September and you hope till early June (Calder Cup Final time) you’re together as a family. I really like this group. They get along well together, and a piece of our family was taken away. I always speak from the heart to the team,” McCambridge said.

McCambridge was channeling his captain’s player role, not so much being their head coach

“I liked Cole a lot. He was a good man. I like what he represented. Now, we have to pick up the slack in a leadership void and what he brought (to the team) on the ice as well.”

Keith McCambridge

From a coach’s perspective, McCambridge sounds as if he lost one of the best forwards in the locker room, despite bumping him to the third or fourth line to kickstart his offense, which seemed to have worked.

“We’re bummed out for sure. That is the tough part of the business, and we signed up for it, and we all know the possibilities,” Holland said. “Our lives can be tossed into a blender and get traded away.”

Peter Holland

Was this the right move for the Wolf Pack? Probably not, but I will let you decide.

John Gilmour Continues To Prosper

The 25-year-old defenseman continues to make strides in Hartford. His contract is up this summer and I expect him to return. Offensively, he has found a spark and ran away with it as his offensive game continues to shine. The prospect has 36 points in 47 games played. Last season in 44 outings, he collected 26 points and in the 2016-17 season, he had 25 points. If the defenseman stays in Hartford for a majority of the season, we could see him reach as high as the 50-point range, which, for a defenseman, would be impressive.

John Gilmour is the best defenseman on the ice for the Pack on both ends of the ice. His speed allows him to easily transition from defense to offense and be able to block lanes when the opponent establishes play in Hartford’s zone. If the Rangers are looking for a call up on the blue line, I expect John Gilmour to get the call.

Injury Updates

Hartford is dealing with a few injuries or illnesses. As a result, players such as Sean Day and Zach Tolkinen are being given opportunities to play.

  • Matt Beleskey – Illness. He should return shortly.
  • Brandon Crawley – Injured. Time table for return is unknown.

Rangers Prospects In Hockey East Updates

Goaltender Tyler Wall was named Hockey East’s defensive player of the week. Congrats to the Rangers prospect for his award!

Closer to home, University of Connecticut’s goaltender, and Rangers prospect, Adam Huska is the starting goalie for the university. Despite a record of 5-11-2 with a 3.16 goals against average, he is still continuing to develop. The team in front of him has struggled this season as the group is led mainly by young freshmen. The University of Connecticut is 7-17-2, but is just 2-12-2 in Hockey East play.

Upcoming Games

The Pack has a busy week coming up. Perhaps the losing streak could get snapped this week.

Tuesday, February 5th vs Bridgeport Sound Tigers (Islanders) at 7 pm, XL Center

  • This is the final meeting in Hartford between the clubs. This is the ninth of ten meetings in the season series. The series finishes up next Saturday in Bridgeport.
  • Hartford is 4-3-1 against Bridgeport. Last season the group was 3-6-1.
  • The Sound Tigers are second in the Atlantic Division with 56 points. They are 25-17-4-2 and have won four of their last ten outings.

Friday, February 8th vs Syracuse Crunch (Tampa Bay) at 7:15 pm, XL Center

  • This is the first meeting between the clubs. This is a two-game season series. Hartford is in Syracuse on March 16th. Last season, the Pack split the season series with the Crunch.
  • Syracuse is 27-13-2-1 for 57 points, second in the North Division. The Crunch enter the week winning six straight.
  • Hartford is 12-9-2 at home, while Syracuse is 10-8-2 on the road.

Saturday, February 9th vs Lehigh Valley Phantoms (Philadelphia) at 7:05 pm, PPL Center

  • The Phantoms are fourth in the Atlantic Division with 55 points. They are 25-17-3-2, and is 5-5 in their last ten outings.

Sunday, February 10th vs Lehigh Valley Phantoms (Philadelphia) at 3:05 pm, PPL Center

  • This is the fifth of six meetings on the season series.
  • Hartford will return to Allentown on April 13th to finish the season series during the final week of the season.

As we gear back up for the second half of the American Hockey League Season in Hartford, the Wolf Pack are in familiar territory, which unfortunately is at the bottom of the standings. The unthinkable has happened again as the club slipped up in too many games that were winnable. As a result, Keith McCambridge’s young crew slips to 19-21-3-2 for 43 points. That ranks Hartford 8th in the Atlantic Division and 15th in the Eastern Conference. The group resumes practice on Thursday after the American Hockey League All-Star break, which began last Sunday. The Pack will have two games this weekend in attempt to snap a five game skid (0-4-1).

AHL

What Has Happened?!

Over the past couple of season, the Wolf Pack have not fared well in the standings around this time of the year. Each season has a different storyline. In each of the previous years, Hartford is simply not good enough. Looking at this year’s issue, it is always the lack of consistency. Numerous times I have written about the young core needing to find consistency in the league. I know they can play well, as I have seen it numerous times this season. Then there are games where they throw away a contest that was winnable. Keith McCambridge has had a hard time getting his troops to provide consistency in their game. As the season has progressed, the team hasn’t found an identity, except be known for a team that opponents can handle.

Chris Drury has work to do if he wants Hartford to have a winning culture again. The Pack hasn’t made the playoffs in five of the last six seasons. Unfortunately, as we look ahead this season, that number will likely increase to six out of seven missed playoffs. Currently, the Wolf Pack are eight points from a playoff spot. That is a steep hill to climb, considering the teams they have to leap frog.

If the team wants to salvage the season, then the boys must go on a lengthy winning streak. To put this into perspective, the Providence Bruins were behind Hartford for most of the season. As the Bruins enter this week, they are now fourth in the division for 51 points. The group that was struggling found a spark and then ran away with it. It’s not impossible to get on a roll, but for this crew, if they have consistency, then they can fight upwards in the standings.

Having the future Rangers developing in a losing culture over seasons will catch up to the organization. Superior homegrown development must take place if the Rangers are going to have a winning organization from the bottom up.

John Gilmour’s AHL All-Star Appearance

Prospect John Gilmour had himself a night on Monday during the All-Star Games. After completing each game, the defenseman found himself notching a hat trick. Who would have knew this would happen?!? Let’s take a look back at his moves. Boy, they were impressive.

The first goal was an empty netter. His second tally was a quick release after a beautiful pass, and the third goal was just impressive. More information regarding the AHL All-Star festivities will be featured shortly on another upcoming article, so stay tuned!

One Timers

  • After registering points almost nightly, Hartford’s top veteran Peter Holland has slowed down in the past few weeks. In the last five contests, he has registered just one assist. I expect his offensive production to increase once he finds his spark once again.
  • John Gilmour continues his production on the blue line. The defenseman has points in five of his last eight outings for a total of nine points.
  • Steven Fogarty has points in three straight games.
  • Vinni Lettieri continues to produce consistently for Hartford. Nightly, his offensive generates good opportunties. In his 26 games played, he’s been held off the scoresheet nine times. That’s impressive for the prospect.
  • Sean Day notched his first pro point with Hartford last Wednesday against the Springfield Thunderbirds.

Roster Move

The Wolf Pack signed forward Zach Tolkinen to a PTO from the organization’s ECHL affiliate, the Maine Mariners. In 33 games for Maine, Tolkinen has registered 12 points (G, 11A).

Alexandar Georgiev’s Stint in Hartford

Despite the Rangers prospect playing backup in New York, Alexandar Georgiev hasn’t performed so well in Hartford. The prospect’s record is 2-9 with a 3.66 GAA and a .883 SV%. Keith McCambridge was not impressed with his playing as of late when he was assigned to the Pack. Considering him as the backup goalie in New York, perhaps playing in Hartford does not mean much for the goaltender. Since he earned the spot already, he could have played with less emphasis in Hartford knowing he will be up again. Another possibility is that he is afraid of getting injured while assigned in the AHL. Who knows, but this is a unique situation

Upcoming Games

This weekend will feature light travel for the club.

Friday, February 1st vs Springfield Thunderbirds (Florida) at 7:05pm, Mass Mutual Center

  • This is the sixth of ten meetings in the season series. Hartford lost two straight against Springfield on January 19th (3-0) and January 23rd (7-4). The Pack is 2-3 in the five games played.
  • This is the second meeting in Springfield this season. The first meeting away from Hartford was on October 28th as the Pack dropped a 6-2 decision.
  • Springfield enters the week fifth in the Atlantic Division with a record of 20-16-6 for 50 points. Hartford is seven points behind the Thunderbirds.
  • Springfield has lost two straight while Hartford has lost five straight.

Saturday, February 2nd vs Rochester Americans (Buffalo) at 7pm, XL Center

  • This is the final meeting in the season series against Rochester. Hartford is 2-1 in the season series. The Pack swept both games in Rochester on December 21st and 22nd.
  • Rochester is first in the North Division with a record of 26-13-3-1 for 56 points. The Americans enter the week on a streak of 4-0-1-1. The club has points in six straight.
  • Hartford went 3-1 in the season series in the 2017-18 season. Hartford hopes to match that effort on Saturday.
  • Starting on Saturday, the Pack are home for nine of their next 14 games.

Keith McCambridge

The Wolf Pack have hit an all-time low as we close out the month of January. As we enter the last week of action before the All-Star festivities, Hartford has fallen in the standings. The Pack dropped their last two of three games.

Hartford is eighth in the Atlantic Division with a record of 19-19-2-2 for 42 points. They are at .500, which is not good enough in the competitive Atlantic Division. Due to last Sunday’s game being postponed to the next day, the Pack found themselves suddenly playing the next four games in a span of six days. They must bounce back, otherwise, they will be too far back to catch up in the second half of the season. Let’s get to business.

Standings Update

I did not expect Hartford to fall this far behind. Unfortunately, this is the reality. However, the standings are still tight. If the Pack find a way to win out the upcoming games this week, they could be in a better spot and literally forget they were in last place. Now is the time to respond after seeing where they stand against the division.

The pivotal games against their divisional rivals are critical to win, which they have not done. As a result of the losses to Springfield and Providence, Hartford dropped while their competitors gained an advantage. The group will try this again in this week’s contests.

Inconsistency Bites Wolf Pack

The storyline of inconsistency continues with the young group. I have seen amazing games where the boys have won in impressive fashion, to games where they are completely dominated by their opponents. The last three games proved how each game is a toss up in performance. We go from a thrilling 6-5 overtime win against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Friday night to a 3-0 shutout loss to the Springfield Thunderbirds, who had lost a few key players and also played an ECHL goalie. Then, if you look at Monday’s game against Providence, Hartford was close but not out until late stages of the third. That game itself featured a slow start, and the group woke up too late to catch up in time.

By now, the group should be playing more consistently. Keith McCambridge wants consistency but he is not getting that. He cannot bench everyone, despite the performance of the team as a whole. He will have to get creative in regrouping his team. I know he loves to teach one-on-one, but he will need to find a plan that will help the team get back on track before its too late.

Connor Brickley Completes First Weekend With Hartford

Forward Connor Brickley debuted last Friday against the Phantoms, netting a goal and an assist for two points. In addition, the experienced forward had a breakaway and other chances throughout the game. You could notice his play immediately on the second line. Then, on Monday, he notched one assist as he shot the puck on net to produce a juicy rebound for John Gilmour to convert. I enjoy his playing style so far and look forward to see how he performs throughout the season. After this season, his contract is up, and he’ll have to prove that he belongs in Hartford.

One Timers

  • Peter Holland’s point streak was snapped on Saturday against Springfield. He had points in nine of the last ten games. In that span, he tallied 20 points (11G, 9A).
  • John Gilmour has points in his two of his last three games. He has two goals and five assists.
  • Hartford will play 11 of their next 18 games at home.
  • Friday’s game against Lehigh Valley had a multi-point performance for a few players on the Wolf Pack roster.

AHL All-Star Weekend

The American Hockey League festivities will happen at the end of the week! Check out a few details regarding the event. I will be attending the exciting events in person. More to come in next week’s article.

  • John Gilmour is the lone Wolf Pack representative. This is his second straight trip to the festivities.

  • The All-Star Game will be on Monday, January 28th at 7 pm.
  • The AHL Hall of Fame Induction will be on January 28th at 11 am at MGM Springfield. The ceremony features former Wolf Pack great Brad Smyth.

  • This is the fifth of ten meetings against the closest rivals in the American Hockey League. The last game was on Saturday as Hartford was shutout, 3-0. Hartford is 2-2 in the season series.
  • Springfield is fourth in the division with a record of 19-14-6-4 for 48 points. Hartford is behind the Thunderbirds by six points.
  • The Thunderbirds won four of their last ten outings. They are on a 1-0-1-1 streak entering Wednesday’s contest.

Friday, January 25th vs Binghamton Devils (New Jersey) at 7:05 pm, Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena

  • This is the second of four meetings against the Devils. The first meeting was on October 10th, a game the Pack lost 5-3.
  • The Devils are seventh in the North Division with a record of 19-22-4 for 42 points. The group enters the week losing three straight (0-2-1).
  • This is the final meeting in Binghamton between the clubs this season. After Friday, the last two games will be in Hartford on March 13th and April 7th.

Saturday, January 26th vs Charlotte Checkers (Carolina) at 7:00pm, XL Center

  • This is the fifth of eight meetings against the league-leading Checkers. Hartford is 1-3 in the season series. In the prior season, Hartford went 2-6 and was winless in Charlotte.
  • The Checkers are first in the division, and the AHL, with a record of 30-10-4 for 64 points.
  • Charlotte enters the week losing two straight (0-1-1). However, the group won six of their last ten games.

NHL

The twenty-year-old prospect’s first full year in the professional ranks is well underway in Hartford with the American Hockey League’s Wolf Pack.

Prior to this season, Libor Hajek spent time in Juniors with the Saskatoon Blades and Regina Pats of the WHL. In his first full season with Hartford, head coach Keith McCambridge has given the prospect a larger role on the team as the season has progressed.

Despite registering three assists in 28 games with Hartford, Libor Hajek plays a well-rounded, 200-foot game. The defenseman is noticeable when Hartford is trying to settle down situations involving the opponents offensive attack. The prospect is able to block shots and ensure he is in the way to block the passing lanes or make it difficult for opponents to move around. His game is simple and effective for the Hartford blue line.

On the offensive aspect of his game, we will have to be patient. The Rangers prospect is still learning and adjusting to the professional life. It is also tougher to score in the AHL where he has more challenges facing him than in the WHL. The competition in the AHL is strong, considering Hartford faces other team’s top prospects. Libor Hajek has the potential to produce points with Hartford once he finds his touch. He had impressive numbers in Juniors, but not every aspect of his game can make the jump. The prospect has handled himself well. Often, younger players get frustrated when they miss opportunities and not be able to get on the scoresheet. For Libor Hajek, he carries on with his game and attempts to play his best in each game, and he has done that.

“It’s hard, coming here from Junior, being a pro,” Hajek said recently. “But I learn, each and every day, guys helping me lots, coaches helping me. It’s good.”

Since joining Hartford, the young prospect is also being mentored by Keith McCambridge, other experienced players in the AHL such as John Gilmour and Cole Schneider, and players with a lot of NHL experience such as Matt Beleskey. Hajek is able to get help in situations he had not faced yet from the WHL. As a young defenseman, mistakes happen; you learn from them and look to improve. In addition, Keith McCambridge has preached a culture in Hartford of practice hard and play hard. Every game matters despite the score. If there is a lack of effort in either, you could find yourself scratched for the next game.

“In regards to what Hajek is striving to improve on, McCambridge pointed out that, as is the case with so many young players at the AHL level, “It’s consistency. It’s, game in, game out, making sure that his game is not having a dropoff. We need him to make sure that every single night, as a coaching staff, we know what we’re going to get out of him. And from that consistency, now he has the opportunity to continue to grow and get himself to the next level.”Keith McCambridge

With the scheduling in the league, Hartford plays games often on back to back nights or three games in three nights. Looking at the perspective of players, being strong mentally is a plus. For Libor Hajek, he has handled that aspect well. Dealing with the schedule, on ice situations, and other aspects of the game, he keeps on chugging along development wise.

I really like the mental side of him, being able to turn the page when a mistake does happen, whether it’s part of where he is on the ice or just a matter of being one of the five for a goal-against that are on the ice at that time. We feel like he’s been able to have that belief in himself, and learn through video, learn through chalk-talk on where you need to be on the ice. And when you’re in those areas, you’re able to get the puck back and to play on the offensive side of it. We like the growth, he’s a young kid, he comes to the rink to get better every day, and there’s a lot of real positives to him right now.”Keith McCambridge

The Rangers found themselves a great two-way player for the future. Despite his offensive struggles, the prospect plays consistent minutes and has a large role with Hartford. Keith McCambridge does not assign important roles to young prospects generally; so if Libor Hajek is being given a critical role early on in his career, then he is doing better than others in the locker room.

Libor Hajek

From a fan perspective, Libor Hajek is enjoyable to watch from the stands. His development is noticeable, from opening night to today, the prospect has grown and enabled himself to perform better under pressure and in situations where things could turn ugly. Hartford’s blue line is young. When Brady Skjei developed in Hartford, I have seen similar traits in Libor Hajek with the speed and playing style.

Will Libor Hajek play a game with the Rangers this season? I will say not yet. Let the rookie develop. He has earned a call-up later on in the season if the Rangers have a sudden influx of injuries.

Wolf Pack Weekly: Rangers AHL Team Pushes Upwards in Standings https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-analysis/wolf-pack-weekly-rangers-ahl-team-pushes-upwards-in-standings Wed, 28 Nov 2018 15:30:15 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=368065 Wolf Pack Goal

The Wolf Pack are chugging along as of late. Last week proved to be huge for the club as they collected all six points up for grabs. This brings the group above .500 and into third place in the competitive Atlantic Division. Hartford has swept the home-and-home series against Bridgeport and defeated their other rival, Providence.

Entering this week, the Wolf Pack are 10-9-1-2 for 23 points. In the Eastern Conference, Hartford is ranked fifth. Impressive, right? The club went from losing a stretch of eight of ten games to winning six of their last ten. The boys are buzzing! Let’s take a look at the latest updates.

Vinni Lettieri Dominates After Demotion

Last week was productive for the talented Rangers prospect. Vinni Lettieri was the hero of the week in helping the Wolf Pack collect wins. He has shown strong offensive instincts and is proven to dominate the American Hockey League. This held true since joining the Wolf Pack.

Vinni Lettieri has three goals, two assists in three straight games in Hartford. He also recorded a shootout tally that was the game winner.

Last Wednesday, Vinni Lettieri notched his first goal of the season. This was a beauty, going coast to coast.

On Friday, he recorded both goals for Hartford in regulation. Here’s the first goal of the night.

The second of the night was the tying goal.

Then he ended the night with the game-winning shootout tally.  On Saturday, the forward collected two assists to help in Hartford’s 3-1 victory against Bridgeport.

Gilmour Finds His Touch

John Gilmour has found his game after he stepped up in the Pack’s school day game on November 14th. Since then, he has continued to show up on the points sheet and became the player that Hartford needed him to be. The prospect defenseman is on a two-game point streak (G, 2A). However, he has three goals and five assists in the last seven games for eight points.

The offensive defenseman continues to help build Hartford’s struggling power play with goals such as these.

Peter Holland Also Finds His Touch

In similar timing to John Gilmour, the veteran has found his game and is continuing to deliver, despite a slow start to the season. Holland has points in six straight games (2G, 6A) for eight points.  This puts the veteran forward tops in total points for the club with 19.

Here’s his latest goal from last Saturday’s game.

The Cole Train Chugs

Hartford’s captain Cole Schneider has had a sluggish start to the season. As a result, head coach Keith McCambridge has bumped the forward to the fourth line as of late in an attempt to wake up the forward. As a result, Cole Schneider has become a better player and is earning points in his limited ice time. The captain has notched points in five straight games, compiling two goals and four assists.

As many remembered last year, Joe Whitney was the captain for Hartford last season. He did not produce and was also bumped to the fourth line. As a result, he was traded to Hershey. This is not the case with Cole Schneider as he has proven that he wants to play better and stick with the group. He should be bumped up depending on the thinking of Keith McCambridge.

The hard work pays off. The captain has to help contribute regardless of which players he is with. This was the case when he got the assist on the whole fourth line crashing the net and causing ruckus afterward.

Dustin Tokarski Improves

The struggling veteran goaltender made strong strides last week. Dustin Tokarski has started three straight games in net and won each start. This improves his record to 4-3-1 with a goals against average of 3.43 and a save percentage of .896. At the beginning of the season, the veteran goalie struggled and had no confidence in net when he gave up multiple goals that could have been stopped.

However, this past week was different.  Dustin Tokarski stopped 87 of the 93 shots he faced. He has made the saves when needed to keep Hartford in the game, especially on Wednesday against Providence and Friday against Bridgeport.

Let’s hope he can keep this up. This is going to be interesting as he has become hot. The competition for who will play each game will be higher. Originally, Marek Mazanec had split even time with Dustin Tokarski. Then Marek Mazanec was the starting goalie. Now with Dustin Tokarski becoming hot, there will be a change once again.

Atlantic Division Standings

Here is the current situation with the standings.

Hartford is in a great position.  However, the issue is the games at hand for the Wolf Pack. The group has played the most games out of any team in the division. Hartford will only play one game this weekend to allow other teams to catch up. By the day of the game on Saturday, Hartford may go down a spot or two depending on the outcomes of other contests.

The Charlotte Checkers are too far ahead in the standings to worry about. The Wolf Pack are ten points behind the Checkers. Unless the Checkers have a downfall, then first place is out of reach currently.

Bridgeport is still in reach for the Pack. Hartford is winning the season series 3-1 and there are six games remaining in the season series. Any combination of Hartford winning and Bridgeport losing would benefit the Pack. Bridgeport is only one game less to Hartford as well.

Springfield is behind Hartford by a point with four games in hand. However, the Thunderbirds are struggling as of late after a dominating start to the AHL season. Springfield has lost six of their last ten games. In addition, Hartford only faced the Thunderbirds once out of the ten-game season series. Points are still on the line against Springfield.

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms are also a point behind Hartford. The Phantoms are generally a dominant team in the AHL. This season proves to be different. Despite Hartford getting outplayed in the first meeting against Lehigh Valley, the Phantoms since have struggled. The Phantoms has lost the last five of ten games. Lehigh Valley is a team that is normally atop the standings. As similar to Springfield, points are on the line in the season series as the Pack only played them once out of eight meetings.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Providence Bruins, and Hershey Bears are only at a few games at hands against Hartford. Currently, those teams are close to the Pack, but they need other scenarios to happen if they want to compete against the top tier teams of the division. I am not worried about those three at the moment looking at the standings.

Notable Notes

  • Dustin Tokarski had the primary assist in the game-winning goal against Providence last Wednesday.
  • Hartford has shown their rough edge as of late. The gloves have been dropped in three straight games.
  • Matt Beleskey had a good week. He notched two goals on Wednesday followed by one assist on Saturday.

  • After the completion of the home game on Saturday against Charlotte, the Pack will be on the road in the next seven of ten meetings.
  • A highlight of the away games consists of two meetings with Charlotte that are back to back in the same week. Hartford will see Charlotte a total of four times in December.
  • Hartford faces the Rochester Americans in back to back games before Christmas.
  • The Pack will face Bridgeport twice at Webster Bank Arena.

Teddy Bear Toss

Last Saturday featured the annual teddy bear toss game for Hartford. Score the first goal and the toys will go flying for Toys for Tots. On Monday during the second intermission of the Rangers game, I found myself on MSG150! I definitely needed help to get over my bear over the glass!

Here is another view…

Ty Ronning Update

Rangers prospect Ty Ronning had himself a night last Saturday with the Maine Mariners. The prospect recorded a hat trick plus two assists for a five-point night against the Manchester Monarchs. That is encouraging to see as he needed a confidence booster.

Roster Moves

  • Chris Nell was moved from Maine to Greenville of the ECHL on 11/20.
  • Vince Pedrie was assigned to Maine on 11/23.
  • Tim Gettinger has been up and down.  Currently, he is with Hartford.

Upcoming Games

There is just one game on tap for this weekend.

Saturday, December 1st vs Charlotte Checkers (Carolina) at 7 pm, XL Center

  • The first of eight meetings between the clubs.
  • The Checkers are first in the league with wins and points (16 wins, 33 points).
  • The Checkers enter the week winning three straight. They have lost four games in regulation and one in overtime.
  • This is a test for Hartford. The Pack last season went 2-6 against Charlotte. Both wins were at home while Hartford was swept away, going 0-4.

Wolf Pack Weekly: Pack Tumbles in Standings https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-analysis/wolf-pack-weekly-pack-tumbles-in-standings Fri, 02 Nov 2018 16:30:53 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=364479 Goal Celebration

Looking back at last week for the Hartford Wolf Pack, let’s just say it was not pretty. The Pack have struggled after starting the season on a good note. What’s happening was unexpected, considering the roster coming into the 2018-19 season. However, a majority of these guys are young and will see highs and lows. How low? That will remain to be seen. Hartford resumes play over the weekend as they continue a five-game road trip before returning to home. Entering the weekend, the Wolf Pack recorded a record of 4-6-1 for 9 points. That sits the group tied for fifth place in the Atlantic Division, and the Pack is hoping to snap a four game losing streak.

Not So Hot Veteran Goaltending

In an area that was expected to give the Pack a fighting chance in every game, that omen was broken last week. Dustin Tokarski has not been himself since last Wednesday’s game against his former team, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The well known goalie gave up four goals in five shots in the opening 4:36 of the first period. Marek Mazanec played the remainder of the game, giving up three goals on 28 shots.

Saturday and Sunday proved more of the same in the crease. Mazanec was unable to make saves to keep the Pack in the game despite a back and forth contest. Marek Mazanec stopped 25 of 30 shots on Saturday night against Bridgeport. Dustin Tokarski played on Sunday, stopping 33 of 38 shots.

The goaltending has to improve. The duo was off to a good start, bailing out the club as the Pack coughed up the puck frequently and had excessive turnovers. Last week was not a good week. However, this is a team game and you cannot only fault the goalies. The defense also needs to be addressed. Let’s hope both goalies can regain their confidence and are able to carry the team with good leadership and experience.

Defense? That’s Missing

The defense had tremendous struggles last weekend. One game was winnable, but the other two were blowouts. That is unacceptable. The Rangers are rebuilding and the prospects have to prove their value for the big club. How can you prove yourself if the defensive core is struggling and not producing? This makes the Rangers wonder what’s going on, considering that it is a rebuilding year. The Wolf Pack must be better than New York, not the opposite. Development is key. I understand the young troops are learning, however, not learning from mistakes that cost goals and losing three games in a row is concerning. The defensive group needs to step up as a whole. They’re struggling and must figure that out.

Last week, Hartford gave up 18 goals in three games. How much did the Wolf Pack score? Just nine.

Head Coach Keith McCambridge had made a few changes to the lineup regarding healthy scratches. He has also mixed up the lines in hopes for better chemistry.

It’s still early in the season to sound the alarm. I want the team to fix their issues and continue to compete in the fierce Atlantic Division. The weekend will be difficult for the group as well. They will have to play at full capacity.

Pack Tracks

  • Lias Andersson’s point streak was snapped on Wednesday night. Prior to last Wednesday, the forward registered points in two straight contests.
  • Shawn O’Donnell was the lone bright spot last weekend. The gritty veteran registered two goals on Wednesday followed by a goal on Saturday. He was impressive in his limited minutes on the third and fourth lines.
  • The +/- has wide range for the club. Shawn O’Donnell and Gabriel Fontaine leads with a +6, while  Bobby Butler, John Gilmour, and Peter Holland are-9. Between the two ranges, it seems almost evenly spread out.
  • Tim Gettinger recorded a goal and one assist for two points last weekend.
  • Everyone appears healthy. So far this season, there has been minor injuries for the group.

Upcoming Games

The Pack started their road trip last Sunday in Springfield. This weekend features a trip to the Keystone State for the first three games in three nights weekend.

Friday, November 2nd vs Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh), 7:05pm at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza

  • The first meeting with the dominate Penguins in the American Hockey League. This begins a six game season series.
  • Last season, Hartford went 3-1-1-1 against the Penguins. In the prior season, the club was swept in the season series.
  • Wilkes-Barre/Scranton enters the week going 5-2-0-1 for 11 points. The Penguins are 3rd in the Atlantic Division.
  • Garrett Wilson leads the Penguins in points with seven. American Hockey League rookie Sam Miletic is second at six points.

Saturday, November 3rd vs Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh), 7:05pm at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza

  • The Pack finish back to back games against the Penguins on the road. This is unusual in the league with the scheduling. The Pack has back to back games on the road again with the same team (Lehigh Valley) later on in the season.
  • Hartford is 2-4 on the road while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is 2-2.

Sunday, November 4th vs Hershey Bears (Washington), 5:00pm, Giant Center

  • The meeting kicks off another six game season series. The Pack went 2-4 last season, despite facing a struggling Bears team.
  • Hershey’s record is identical to Hartford’s, going 4-6-0-1. Both clubs enter the week tied in points of nine.
  • The Bears won two straight when they finished last weekend.
  • Liam O’Brien leads the Bears in points with seven.

Ryan Gropp

The first week of the season is in the books for the Wolf Pack, with Hartford skating into week two with two consecutive victories. In both contests last weekend, the Pack looked sharp and put on an impressive show. The Rangers of tomorrow brought their “A game” and all is well.  Let’s dissect what we’ve watched from the talented roster.

Offensive Bursts

When the offense gets going, the opponent will have a tough time handling the Pack. On Friday night against Providence, the Pack came out storming and scored three goals in the first period in a little more than seven minutes of gameplay. Two goals were about a minute apart. When the group is buzzing, they are able to put up numbers. The span also consisted of a power play, short-handed, and an even-strength goal. You cannot teach that. Each goal had a type of skill involved, either from a wrist shot or to a well-executed play. For instance, here is Tim Gettinger’s first pro goal. It was a strong play by Chris Bigras with the cycle on the blue line, then a solid wrist shot by the rookie Tim Gettinger.

Shifting to Sunday’s contest, the offensive explosion happened again. This time, the span of three goals scored was in roughly two minutes with two goals under a minute apart. The Laval Rocket controlled the first half of the first period until the Pack woke up and shifted their play into high gear.

Comparing the two games, the Pack have scored in various ways. The contest against Providence featured the assets of slap-shots and wrist-shots. The Pack was able to snipe the puck past goalies from a considerable distance. Then, on Sunday, the group used chemistry well to their advantage with impressive 2v1 plays and passing sequences. They were unable to cash in when crashing the net, but that shouldn’t discourage them from keeping up that style of play in the future.

Power Play Look

Hartford had nine power plays between the two contests, but Hartford was unable to capitalize. However, in both games, the group generated solid chances, especially in Sunday’s contest against the Laval Rocket. The players are able to crash the net and pick away at the puck until the goalie froze it. They generated shots and moved the puck well with the man advantage. Had the power-play converted, the Pack could’ve easily turned both contests into blowouts.

Notable Observations

When Hartford is ready to play, they are a force. On the offensive side, they are able to play in any type of way depending on the opponent. They are able to crash the net, score from afar, and get creative when entering the zone and generating plays. The chemistry is strong early on in the season as the boys are buzzing.

The talent from the Rangers prospects is also noticeable. They are not afraid to deke or utilize their skill sets. Every player has a role and everyone is performing well.

The defensive side of the game is the weakest part of the team. However, they play hard and complete every shift with heart and effort. Shots are getting blocked constantly, the passing lanes are clogged, and on the penalty kill, the group is clearing the puck and making it difficult for the opponents to set up plays.

Marek Mazanec

The goalie situation is perfect. Hartford has two veterans in Marek Mazanec and Dustin Tokarski between the pipes. Both played solid games when the opposing team pressured the Pack and pinched the Pack on the penalty kill.

Focusing on improvements, discipline is the most critical one for the Wolf Pack. The Pack took six penalties against Providence, then four against Laval. Hartford at times would play with an added edge but took unnecessary penalties. Being better disciplined would help the team, especially in situations where they are holding a lead or behind. Specialty teams can make or break a game and a season.

Another area of focus I want to elaborate on is the shot totals. Hartford was outshot in both games. The common theme is the Pack shoot less and less after the first period. They must maintain consistency when attacking the net. The perfect shot should not be the only option. Shooting on net gives them a chance to win games, and possibly score depending on their luck with the puck and the situation.

The Wolf Pack have strong potential this season. They have the pros and cons so far. Working on the cons is possible and not far off. Work hard and play hard is the best key to success. Keith McCambridge has a talented roster.  Everyone has their role.  Let’s keep this up boys!

Notes

  • Cole Schneider is the captain. The alternate captains are Rob O’Gara and Steven Fogarty.
  • Hartford scored seven goals while giving up three in their first two games.
  • Cole Schneider leads the team in points with three (one goal, two assists).
  • Chris Bigras, Tim Gettinger, John Gilmour, Peter Holland, Michael Lindqvist, Ville Meskanen, Lias Andersson, and Steven Fogarty end the weekend with two points each.
  • Libor Hajek and Chis Bigras lead the team in +/- with +4.
  • Ty Ronning, Brandon Crawley, and Vince Pedrie were scratched for both games.

Upcoming Games

Hartford will play three games this upcoming week. Two will be on the road with one at home.

Wednesday, October 10th vs Binghamton Devils (New Jersey) at 7:05 pm, Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena

  • The first road trip of the season for Hartford.
  • The Pack will face the Devils four times, two home and two away.
  • Binghamton has played one game and defeated the Toronto Marlies 7-5 on Sunday.

  • The second meeting against the Bruins.
  • This meeting begins a home-and-home series with Providence, with game two on Saturday.
  • Providence enters the weekend losing two straight.

Saturday, October 13th vs Providence Bruins (Boston) at 7:05 pm, Dunkin’ Donuts Center

  • The final game of the week for Hartford.
  • The Pack were 1-2-1-1 last season in Providence.

Wolf Pack general manager Chris Drury announced the training camp schedule for the organization. Hartford will receive additional players from New York when more cuts are announced by David Quinn and the Rangers. The club will begin training camp with a few invitees and players from New York.

Schedule

The training camp opens on Saturday, September 22 at the XL Center in Hartford. Day one is on ice testing, while other days include practice and off-ice workouts. During the day of the preseason games, the non-game group will have practice while the other group will not as they prep for the game. Here is the full schedule:

Who’s Here?

Currently, Hartford has the first cuts of players from the Rangers along with invitees. In addition, a few Maine players are on the training camp list as well.

The Wolf Pack will open training camp with a roster of 17 players, 10 forwards, four defensemen and three goaltenders:

Goal (3): Connor LaCouvee, Brandon Halverson, Chris Nell

Defense (4): Sean Day, Vince Pedrie, Derek Pratt, Scott Savage

Forwards (10): Riley Bourbonnais, Alex Kile, Dawson Leedahl, Mike Marnell, Drew Melanson, Shawn O’Donnell, Ty Ronning, Shawn St. Amant, Jason Salvaggio, Brady Vail

More players will be in the training camp at a later date. The cuts made by Hartford will not begin until after the first preseason game.

Preseason Dates

As a reminder, Hartford plays back to back games:

  • Friday, September 28th vs Bridgeport at 1:00 pm
  • Saturday, September 29th vs Bridgeport at 1:00 pm

The first cuts from the Packs training camp will likely be after the first game. Stay tuned for updates as they unfold. Hartford will have to submit their finalized roster either Wednesday, October 3rd or Thursday, October 4th to the American Hockey League. The season opens up on Friday, October 5th.

Fierce Competition

As the Rangers make their cuts, the training camp in Hartford will become highly competitive. The group will have motivated, young, talented prospects to make the roster in the AHL. The league is the second best in North America.  Players on an invitation, such as Shawn O’Donnell who comes to training camp as a grizzled veteran will have a tough time battling for a spot against the Rangers fresh youth. Shawn O’Donnell is an ex-Pack player who played with the organization from the 2013-14 season to the 2015-16 season. The forward joined Hartford last season through a professional tryout agreement, playing in one contest with the Pack before being released.

As for other invitees, they will also have to bring it if they want to be considered a spot. From the top line to the fourth, there is limited space for everyone. If any prospect cannot crack Hartford’s lineup, they will be re-assigned to Maine and participate in their training camp.

It will be interesting to see who ends up where throughout the organization.
