This is an idea that David Quinn has expressed in past years and has continued to preach.

The Rangers have lost three in a row going into tonight. The shutouts against the Islanders were rather distasteful. The game on Monday against the Capitals was at least more competitive. But tonight, it comes down to playing a full 60 minutes with an element of physicality in order to have success.

Rangers vs Capitals: Playing a full 60 has been a persistent issue

Throughout the season, David Quinn and his players have spoken about the need to play a full game every night. However, they haven’t been able to do that of late. The Rangers must apply pressure from the start against the Capitals. On Monday, as soon as they relented, the Capitals took advantage of it. By the third period, the Capitals had more jump to their game. It became very difficult for the Rangers to spend meaningful time in the offensive zone. The Rangers must find a way to keep a certain level of intensity in their game throughout. Putting the pressure on in the first and second periods isn’t enough, especially against a team like the Capitals. This team can create offense even when given little space and time to work with.

The Rangers got off to a faster start on Monday night which is something they must do again. A quick start helps to set the tone not only for their opponent, but for the Rangers themselves. A few effective shifts right at the beginning send a message to the rest of the team. However, an energetic start only matters if the intensity and urgency are maintained throughout the game.

NEW YORK RANGERS

Mika Zibanejad led by example on Monday night. As one of the alternate captains who does not seem like a very vocal leader, this is very valuable. Zibanejad had plenty of jump in his game. He recorded two goals, and almost had a third. He was certainly noticeable all over the ice. It seemed he was trying to set the tone for the Rangers. That’s what a leader does. It’s clear that Zibanejad is a skilled and talented player, but there’s something to be said for his leadership qualities as well. On a young team, it’s important to have someone who leads by example in order to establish a culture.

Kaapo Kakko and Alexis Lafreniere combined for a beautiful goal off of a two-on-one on Monday. The goal helped the Rangers take a 3-2 lead, if only briefly. The pass from Lafreniere back to Kakko was a display of patience and hockey IQ. He read off the defenseman well and was able to make a quick move and get the puck back to Kakko. From there, Kakko used a clever deke to beat Vitek Vanecek. The move was similar to one he used at the World Championships in 2019 that put him on the highlight reel. That in itself is indicative of how much more confident Kakko has become. This play by the Rangers’ two developing stars was a highly encouraging display of skill and one the fans have been waiting for. The future is certainly bright.

Rangers need to incorporate an element of physicality

The Rangers responded to Tom Wilson’s act of violence by releasing a statement taking a direct shot at the head of the Department of Player Safety, George Parros, last night. However, they now need an on-ice response. What Wilson did to Pavel Buchnevich and Artemi Panarin was inexcusable and warrants more than a $5000 fine. He punched Buchnevich, shoving his face farther into the ice while also pulling up on his stick which was caught under Buchnevich’s neck. I don’t recall choking a player during a scrum being legal. So why is the league tolerating it? Additionally, Wilson body slammed Panarin into the ice several times while he had his helmet off. He then proceeded to punch him with his gloves on which is also illegal.

Tom Wilson was called a fraud by Paul Stewart because he goes after finesse players. Dishonorable is another word. If Wilson were really so tough, he would go after the league’s heavyweights. But I’d like to see him fight someone like Ryan Reaves. Buchnevich and Panarin are both skill players. Further, continuing to go at a player after he’s down is not honorable in the slightest. There is nothing respectable about attacking a vulnerable, or completely defenseless player. Clearly, the league is uninterested in doing anything meaningful about it which is ridiculous considering the facts of the incident and that Wilson is a repeat offender.

So now the Rangers must respond. Along with getting off to a quick start, they require some big hits early. They must set the tone of the game. They have to show the Capitals that what Wilson did was unacceptable and they won’t stand idly by while their star player is out for the remaining three games of the season. There have been some rumors floating around Mason Geertsen possibly getting a call-up. That would be helpful considering his physical style of play. However, this is not confirmed at this time. The Rangers need another plan. Someone is going to have to step up. In general, the Rangers generally prefer a finesse style of play. That is going to have to change.

Rangers vs Capitals Pregame Notes

  • All-Time vs Capitals: 103-100-18-11 (57-45-9-5 at home; 46-55-9-6 on the road)
  • The Blueshirts are the only NHL team that has five players who have recorded at least 45 points in 2020-21 (no other team has more than three). New York is one of two NHL teams that have three players who have registered 20 or more goals this season (Pittsburgh).
  • New York ranks 11th in the NHL in goals per game this season (3.19). The Rangers will average at least 3.00 goals per game for the second consecutive season, marking the first time the team has averaged 3.00 or more goals per game in two straight seasons since 1995-96 and 1996-97. Including team goals awarded for a shootout win, the Rangers have tallied three or more goals in each of their 26 wins in 2020-21.

NHL drops ball with Tom Wilson, Rangers should call up Mason Geertsen https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-games/nhl-drops-ball-with-tom-wilson-rangers-should-call-up-mason-geertsen Tue, 04 May 2021 16:42:22 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=402402 Calling Mason Geertsen. Calling Mason Geertsen.

The NHL failed to protect another Ranger from Tom Wilson’s goon tactics by issuing what amounts to a small parking ticket for sucker punching Pavel Buchnevich. They also felt that grabbing Artemi Panarin by the hair and nearly cracking his skull open on the ice was not a big deal.

By only fining him $5000, he will be able to play against the Rangers tomorrow night at the Garden. That means the Blueshirts must take matters of justice (or at least protection) into their own hands. With two call-ups remaining, they need to use one on heavyweight Mason Geertsen.

Rangers should call up heavyweight Mason Geertsen

mason geertsen
Mason Geertsen would be a tough add (Getty Images)

Mason Geertsen is 6-4 and 221 pounds. He is considered one of the AHL’s best heavyweights and will certainly keep Tom Wilson honest. The defenseman, who could also dress as a forward has 5 fights in this AHL shortened season and 9 the season prior.

Watch the video to see how he can handle himself.

Bottom line, the NHL did nothing to ensure the Rangers players would be safe tomorrow night. It’s time to take matters into their own hands. And if tomorrow’s game turns into the slapstick comedy Slap Shot, the NHL will only have itself to blame.

New York Rangers sign first round pick Braden Schneider to contract https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-analysis/new-york-rangers-sign-first-round-pick-braden-schneider-to-contract Thu, 04 Mar 2021 02:30:25 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=400856 The New York Rangers have signed 2020 1st round draft pick Braden Schneider to and entry level contract. It should be noted that the deal starts next season 2021-22.

Rangers ink Braden Schneider

The Rangers traded up this past draft to select the physical defenseman. So far the move looks like a wise one as he continues to impress at every level.

Schenieder played a big role for Team Canada’s Silver Medal run at the World Juniors. He picked up an assist in two games with the Wolf Pack before heading to his WHL team, the Brandon Wheat Kings. Upon his return, Schneider was named their 64th captain in franchise history.

Rangers sign Mason Geertsen to a two-way contract

The Rangers also signed Wolf Pack defenseman, Mason Geertsen to a 2 way deal. He was previously on an AHL only deal. This indicates to me that the Rangers may likely be selling on Brendan Smith and Jack Johnson at the trade deadline.

They will need options for the taxi squad and Geertsen has played well since joining the Pack.

Sabres need to get real about Jack Eichel

Buffalo is going to need to temper expectations on a return if they trade Eichel.

Libor Hajek will lead the Pack for the Rangers expanded roster on defense https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-games/libor-hajek-will-lead-the-pack-for-the-rangers-expanded-roster-on-defense Fri, 03 Jul 2020 20:09:59 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=393800 In approximately 10 more days the NHL will open up Phase 3. This will signal the start of training camps for all 24 teams in the Return to Play format. The Rangers can invite 30 skaters and unlimited goalies, but will need to cut that to 28 skaters and three goalies before Phase 4 begins on August 1st.

Projecting the Rangers expanded roster on defense

When the action starts, you can expect the same lineup on defense as it was when they played the Colorado Avalanche before the pause.

After trading Brady Skjei at the deadline, the Rangers moved Brendan Smith back to defense and did not carry a 7th defenseman. Instead they opted to carry three goalies and two extra forwards.

Now the Rangers will take those 20 skaters and add eight more for the playoffs. Let’s focus on defense where I expect the Rangers to carry at least three if not four additional rearguards.

Libor Hajek will be the 7th defenseman

Libor Hajek, now 22 years-old made quite an impression during the 2018-19 season where he played 5 games and scored a great goal before having his season end early due to a separated shoulder.

Coming into this campaign, Libor made the team out of camp and was partnered on left defense with Adam Fox. The two rookies had some puck management issues and were separated with Hajek finding himself playing mostly with Jacob Trouba.

Libor Hajek will make the roster (Getty Images)

In 28 games this season he tallied 5 assists but struggled at times. He was eventually sent down to Hartford to continue his development. He picked up 3 points playing for the Wolf Pack in 23 games.

That early season stint and familiarity with David Quinn’s system makes him a shoe-in for the 7th defense spot. It’s one I believe Hajek will be ready for.

Darren Raddysh’s gutsy play will earn him a spot

Darren Raddysh, the Wolf Pack’s reliable defenseman put up 28 points in 62 games this season. Night in and night out, he was strong and consistent for the Pack blue-line. He is also a right-handed shot and the Rangers will need that just in case injuries mount on the right-side.

The 24 year-old competes and that is all you can ask for when it comes to emergency defenseman. He stands a good chance of putting up a solid showing and making this roster out of camp.

Brandon Crawley has offensive promise to make the roster

The 23 year-old Crawley is a lefty shooting blue-liner who isn’t afraid to join the play. Although limited to just preseason action he has the poise to step in and step up.

Brandon Crawley (Getty Images)

This season he started with Maine in the ECHL but worked his way back. “I dealt with some injuries and setbacks,” Crawley told us in an exclusive interview back in June. “When I was put in that situation, I was forced to think of how to handle this…how to get better“. And that’s what Crawley did and is in a good position to earn a spot on this roster for the playoffs.

Author’s note: Article originally included Mason Geertsen as a long shot but he is on an AHL only deal.

Rangers AHL affiliate sign two defenders, Vincent LoVerde and Mason Geertsen https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-news/rangers-ahl-affiliate-sign-two-defenders-vincent-loverde-and-mason-geertsen Thu, 23 Apr 2020 17:10:41 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=391625 On the heels of yesterday’s article to keep veteran AHL defender Vincent LoVerde, the Wolf Pack have signed him and Mason Geertsen. These are great moves by GM Chris Drury that maintains the Pack’s solid defense.

LoVerde

LoVerde brings tremendous experience to the roster. Aside from his accomplishments in the league, he is a warrior that has gone through the wars of tense playoff battles. He has participated in post-season action each season in his career that often had a good number of games played. – 4B Millner

Vincent LoVerde on defense (AHL)

Geertsen

Since the beginning of the season, Geertsen has been a player that Pack fans have latched on to as that fan favorite. Big hits, dropping the gloves and sticking up for his mates when necessary and even making a couple of good plays on the offensive side of the puck in big spots despite only 7 assists through 45 games. His 73 penalty minutes are nearly double that of the second highest, Phil di Giuseppe with 39. Despite the one ice intangibles, one of the biggest reasons Mason Geertsen is considered a fan favorite is his interaction with fans. Everything from taking a picture to playing Rock/Paper/Scissors with young fans during pregame warmups, Mason Geertsen has given back to Wolf Pack fans to show his appreciation. – 4B Markiewicz

2019-20 Wolf Pack season on hold awards https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-analysis/2019-20-wolf-pack-season-on-hold-awards Fri, 03 Apr 2020 17:32:49 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=391070 In the 3 weeks since the shutdown of the AHL season due to the current COVID-19 situation, there is still a lot of uncertainty as to what the future holds for the league in regards to the remainder of the 2019-20 season. On March 16th, the AHL announced that play was to remain suspended through the month of April and likely into May with players given the option to return home in the meantime. On Tuesday word came out that the NHL recommended players remain in quarantine through April 15th and would expect the AHL to recommend the same.

Some teams, including the Wolf Pack, Bridgeport and Binghamton, have even taken steps to melt their ice as a means of cost saving as arenas aren’t generating enough revenue to justify the extra expense with the season on hold. Teams have also refunded or working towards refunding season ticket holders for the regular season games that won’t be played. With that in mind, I take a look at the Wolf Pack’s season to this point and hand out a couple of individual awards along with a summary of the season to this point.

Unsung Hero: Mason Geertsen

Mason Geertsen (Getty Images)

The Rangers annually have awarded the Steven McDonald Extra Effort award to the player that goes above and beyond the call of duty. If the Wolf Pack had such an award to give a player, for this season it would be defenseman Mason Geertsen. Always one to put forth a tireless effort, Geertsen became a favorite with Wolf Pack fans for his hustle, toughness on the ice, unwillingness to back down for a challenge and always be one to stick up for his teammates. Geertsen came to Hartford after 5 years in the Avs organization via tryout in training camp impressing enough to earn an AHL contract for this season. He took advantage of the opportunity with his hustle and gritty play to show Chris Drury that right choice was made and appears to be the case.

While his 8 assists in 60 games played this season don’t jump off of the stat sheet by any means but more than makes up for it with big hits, good defense and playing with an edge but within limits for the most part. With Geertsen is only signed for this season, the hope is that he does stay in Hartford beyond this season as his contributions have played a large part in what has been a turnaround season for the Wolf Pack.

Top Goaltender: Igor Shesterkin

Shesterkin (HWP)

Hartford was abuzz with the news that The Czar was coming in to start his first season in North America with the Wolf Pack. With the stats and hype about his lights out play in the KHL, everyone knew to take the Pack seriously so long as Igor was in goal. Going into the season as the Pack’s number one over Adam Huska, Shesterkin won his first 5 starts allowing one goal or less in 4 of those 5 which included a shutout. Shesterkin would go on to play an additional 20 games with the Pack and post a record of 17-4-3 with a 1.90 GAA and a .934 save percentage with 3 shutouts.

Despite being called up to New York in January 6th and making only 2 AHL starts since then, Shesterkin’s GAA and save percentage still rank 2nd in the AHL. His play with the Rangers this season has also been as advertised, if not better, and has him poised to be the number one next season with the Blueshirts. Igor Shesterkin is a generational talent among goaltenders and has been the biggest key in the Pack’s 2019-20 season and is the Pack’s top goaltender this season in my book.

Most Improved Player: Vitali Kravtsov

Kravtsov (Wolf Pack)

Another Rangers prospect that came to Hartford with the hype of being a 9th overall pick, Vitali Kravtsov, like Igor Shesterkin, was sent to the Pack to begin his first pro season in North America. Unlike Igor, Kravtsov stumbled out of the gate. His early season play was subpar at best, finding himself benched late in games, not playing above the 3rd line and even a healthy scratch early in the season. After 5 games and only 1 assist, Kravtsov decided to exercise his European Assignment Clause and went back to Russia. Kravtsov returned to the Pack in December as the Rangers wanted to take hold of his development. Since returning, Kravtsov found himself playing important minutes and on the power play scoring 6 goals to go with 8 assists in the 34 games since his return.

While he’s made improvements to his game since returning from Russia, he still to find some consistency but does find himself in a position to challenge for a roster spot in New York next season. Vitali Kravtsov has a future with the Rangers and will look to keep the trend going up.

Team MVP: Vinni Lettieri

Lettieri (AHL)

Entering his third season in the Rangers organization, Vinni Lettieri had yet to establish himself with the Blueshirts and found himself back in Hartford this season. Lettieri managed 9 points in his first 9 games of the season plateaued by the end of November with 15 points (6 goals, 9 assists) in 21 games but many began to question why he had and if he could turn things around. Come December, Lettieri’s season began to turn around as he would go on to score 19 goals and net 13 assists for 32 points in his next 40 games played to bring his season totals to a career high 25 goals which also rank 10th in the AHL, 22 assists fo 47 points, one shy of his career high of 48 points. This surge in offense was enough to earn Lettieri a selection to the 2020 AHL All-Star Classic in Ontario to replace Igor Shesterkin on the Atlantic Division roster where he would go on to score 3 goals and pick up a pair of assists.

With all of the hype surrounding the drama of Vitali Kravtsov and the spectacular goaltending of Igor Shesterkin and with support from line mates such as Matt Beleskey and Steven Fogarty, Vinni Lettieri has managed his best AHL season to date. While Lettieri appears to be heading for free agency this summer, it’s still unclear whether he stays or will go but regardless of what happens, no question that Vinni Lettieri has been the Pack’s most valuable player during the 2019-20 season.

Summing Up the Season Thus Far

With the arrival of John Davidson and his decree that more attention would be centered on player development here in Hartford, many predicted the Wolf Pack would improve after finishing below .500 in 2 of the prior 3 seasons and missing the playoffs the last 4 seasons. Overall, the Pack made great strides this season compared to the prior 4 years. A fresh face behind the bench in Kris Knoblauch, captain Steven Fogarty leading the way on the ice, Matt Beleskey and Vincent LoVerde providing a veteran presence, Vinni Lettieri and Phil di Giuseppe getting pucks to the net, LoVerde with Darren Raddysh leading an improved defense corps, role players like Patrick Newell and Nick Jones playing at key points ahead of Igor Shesterkin and Adam Huska in goal. This year’s Pack team had something great in the works and were on their way to heights that had not been reached in years.

Unfortunately, like the rest of the AHL, roster moves are a plenty and the Pack weren’t immune. The trading of All-Star Joey Keane to Carolina dealt a blow to the defense for which they had yet to recover from prior to the season being suspended. Phil di Giuseppe being called up to New York due to injuries and playing well enough to stay in the lineup with the Rangers over their last several games. Igor Shesterkin’s recall to New York in January leaving rookie Adam Huska as the number one goaltender for a period of time until the Rangers traded for JF Berube from the Flyers. While Huska had many good moments, his overall play was nowhere near the level of Shesterkin and Berube had yet to settle in before the suspension of the season.

Those factors saw the Pack fall from atop the Atlantic Division and among the top teams in the league to fighting for their playoff lives. For this reason, if I had to give the 2019-20 Hartford Wolf Pack’s season, to this point, a letter grade it would be a C+/B-. While this team showed a lot of promise, they began to run out of gas after losing players like Keane, di Giuseppe and Shesterkin as the offense was often stymied, the defense began to show some holes and the goaltending wasn’t as sharp. The future of the team does remain bright with the likelihood of recent signings Patrick Khodorenko, Mike O’Leary, Alex Whalen to an AHL deal as possible roster players next season and possibly Tyler Wall and K’Andre Miller being in the mix. Even though it’s becoming more and more doubtful that the season will continue and a Calder Cup champion would be crowned as each day passes with no hockey, this Wolf Pack team and the New York Rangers have given fans something to look forward to for next year and years to come.

Wolf Pack Watch: Road Heavy February Begins https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-analysis/wolf-pack-watch-road-heavy-february-begins Tue, 04 Feb 2020 12:33:24 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=388519 Figuring out how to successfully play on the road begins this week for Hartford. Once the month of February concludes, the Wolf Pack will have seven road games remaining while becoming home heavy to conclude the 2019-2020 campaign. The remainder of February compose of seven away games with four home games sprinkled between road travel. Despite dominating on home ice, the Wolf Pack are below .500 away from the XL Center. The club must find a way to win games, or to close them out when being the visitors. They will have two tries this upcoming week in Charlotte, which they have never won in franchise history.

Wolf Pack Continue Three Game Stand Against Springfield

In the mini series, the Wolf Pack are 1-1 in two meetings. The third meeting will be back at the XL Center midweek while the first two was a home and home. Hartford won the first game, then was shutout 2-0 in Springfield on the following night. Again, road struggles continue to haunt the group. The Hershey Bears were also in action and shutout against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms by the score of 3-0. Both teams continue to be tied in the standings for 1st in the Atlantic Division.

Wolf Pack Can Make History Wednesday

Hartford’s next home game is on Wednesday when the group host the Springfield Thunderbirds. If the Wolf Pack pull out a victory in any fashion, they will set a new franchise record for consecutive home wins (12). The group tied the previous record on Friday night, which occurred in the 2004-05 season from December 17th, 2004 to February 18th, 2005.

The Wolf Pack are 19-1-0-2 at home through 22 games at the XL Center. The last loss was in regulation on November 20th against the Syracuse Crunch. That is remarkable.

Standings Update

Entering the week, Hartford is 26-11-4-5 for 61 points. That ranks the Wolf Pack 1st in the Atlantic Division, second in the Eastern Conference (Belleville is ahead by one point), and third in the league.

The Hershey Bears are still tied in the standings with Hartford. The Bears are 28-15-2-3 for 61 points. However, the Wolf Pack own the tiebreaker as the club played two less games than Hershey. Hartford plays on Wednesday while Hershey is off until Friday. The game on hand will reduce to one once we enter the weekend.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are 23-16-3-5 for 54 points in the division. The Penguins are becoming hot as of late, winning their last six of 10 games and are on a 5-0-0-2 run entering the week. The Penguins hold down the final playoff spot in 4th.

Challenges Ahead

The most notable challenge is improving play on the road. The Wolf Pack compiled a 7-10-4-3 record through 24 road games. The month of February brings a challenge to the group. They are missing something while playing on the road. The group will have plenty of games on the docket this month to figure how out to be competitive away from home ice. Currently, Hartford is on a 0-3-2 run on the road that has to be snapped.

Mason Geertsen (Getty Images)

Another struggle is the power play. Hartford’s power play ranks 27th in the league operating a 13.8%. The group has talent and they are unable to figure out the man advantage. If the PP can improve before the playoffs, then the Pack can make a run to the Cup. While this is a struggle, this is not as important as playing on the road. On the other hand, maybe an improved power play could help turn a corner on road struggles

Scouting the Pack: Mason Geertsen a fan favorite in Hartford https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-analysis/scouting-the-pack-mason-geertsen-a-fan-favorite-in-hartford https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-analysis/scouting-the-pack-mason-geertsen-a-fan-favorite-in-hartford#comments Mon, 03 Feb 2020 12:39:55 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=388364 Over the 23 year history of the Hartford Wolf Pack, there have been many fan favorites for many different reasons. From the likes of PJ Stock, Dale Purinton, longtime captain Ken Gernander to Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky, Cam Talbot, and more recently John Gilmour, fans in Hartford have latched on for their toughness, leadership and ability to come up big a key spots during games. It’s easy for many to say that Igor Shesterkin has been a fan favorite in Hartford this season with his stellar play in goal but if you polled those who follow the Pack all season, many would say that the clear fan favorite this season has been defenseman Mason Geertsen. At 24 years old, 6’4” and 216 lbs there’s a lot to like.

Early Pro Career

Originally drafted in the 4th round of the 2013 Entry Draft (93rd overall) by the Colorado Avalanche, Geertsen played in the Western Hockey League with the Edmonton Oil Kings before moving on to the Vancouver Giants. Despite being a mostly stay at home defenseman, his final season saw him post his best offensive numbers with 13 goals, 25 assists for 38 points, each category best among Giants defensemen and also 5th overall on the team in goals. Geertsen also lead the team in penalty minutes that season with 107 and had 126 the prior season.

After that season, he opted to turn pro and played 9 games with the Lake Erie (now Cleveland) Monsters. 2015-16, his first full season saw him split between the Avs new AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage. Geertsen netted 4 assists with San Antonio in 36 games but found himself back in the ECHL, this time with the Colorado Eagles where he played during their run to a Kelly Cup championship, scoring a goal and netting 3 assists in 19 playoff games. 2017-18 saw Mason in the AHL for good as he played 72 games with San Antonio netting his first 3 AHL goals and 6 assists to go with 117 penalty minutes with 3 more goals and 13 assists the following season and 134 penalty minutes with the Avs nee AHL affiliate, the Colorado Eagles. Despite being a very decent young defenseman, Colorado opted not to keep him around and Geertsen found himself a free agent.

Signing with the Pack

Geertsen had been passed over throughout the 2019 offseason until he was offered an invite by the New York Rangers to their training camp. While he didn’t impress enough in NHL camp, he stayed on for the AHL camp here in Hartford. Unfortunately not many of us knew about him having spent his career in a part of the country that gets very little coverage, just that he was in camp on a tryout playing for a contract. It didn’t take long for Mason Geertsen to make an impression during the first preseason game against Springfield showing good speed to go with his size and throwing a couple of very good hits. On September 29th, Geertsen signed a one year AHL contract with the Wolf Pack and had made the Pack’s opening night roster after that stellar AHL camp.

Player and fan interaction goes a long way sometimes and so does play on the ice. While other teams have their fan favorites and cult heroes, Mason Geertsen has quickly become the latest Wolf Pack player to steal the hearts of fans just as so many have in prior years.

The Wolf Pack had one heck of a weekend as the group swept another three in three, collecting six points in regulation. Hartford snapped their 0-3-2 skid Friday night in Springfield, starting a new winning streak with the Pack having points in five straight games.

The offensive slump is over, with Kris Knoblauch’s squad scoring 14 goals in the last three outings. The boys will be busy in the upcoming weeks as Hartford has three-midweek games within the next two weeks before the Christmas break.

Standings Update

Entering the week, Hartford is back on top in the Atlantic Division with a record of 14-4-2-5 for 35 points. Providence is 16-8-1-2 for 35 points as well, with the Pack holding the tiebreaker. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton sits third and is 13-8-3-1-1 for 30 points.

Yegor Rykov Debuts

Coming off an injury suffered in the Traverse City Tournament, Rykov skated in his first action of the season this past weekend. The 22-year-old recorded an assist in his first game wearing a Wolf Pack uniform. The defenseman fit in well from the start and is adjusting to the North American rink quickly. He had a good weekend considering he was thrown into the lineup, skating to a +3 and recording the aforementioned assist. I am looking forward to him playing more games in Hartford.

Lias Andersson Breaks Out

Arguably the best game of the season for the first round prospect, Andersson had a fantastic showing on Saturday’s game against the Binghamton Devils. The prospect had two goals and an assist after being held without a point in the previous three outings. This was the game Ranger fans were waiting for. Lias played a good amount of minutes over the weekend, but he was only able to show up on the score sheet in the one game. Andersson has to be more consistent offensively. On the plus side, he is engaged in the game on a nightly basis. Defensively, he is willing to help out and attempt to force a turnover against the opponents.

Captain Steven Fogarty Delivers

Steven Fogarty is coming off a stretch that had the forward contribute 11 points in the last nine games. The captain had a magnificent game last Saturday, having a four-point night against the Binghamton Devils. Prior to his big night on the scoresheet, Fogarty has found ways to contribute nearly on a nightly basis over the last few weeks. Fogarty continues to be reliable in the eyes of the coaching staff, and as a result, the veteran has played in all situations throughout the season.

Under the Radar: Mason Geertsen

Despite not appearing on the scoresheet frequently, the rugged defenseman continues to be effective physically. The addition of Geertsen has added grit to Hartford’s roster. When Geertsen is on the ice, he is willing to stir the pot, be physical, and cause issues for the opposing teams.

Kris Knoblauch inserted Geertsen on Hartford’s fourth line instead of his natural spot on the blue line. As a result, Geertsen had a great weekend for the Pack. He gave Springfield, Binghamton, and Providence trouble when in Hartford’s defensive zone. The defenseman used his body frequently against the opposing team and has been noticeable in the defensive aspects of the game.

One Timers

  • Steven Fogarty collected 11 points (6G, 5A) in the last few weeks. Fogarty leads the team in points with 21.
  • Danny O’Regan enters the week on a three-game point streak. The forward has two goals and three assists. Prior to his streak, O’Regan was held without a point in five straight games.
  • Vinni Lettieri has points in four of the last six games, recording three goals and three assists. He is second on the team for total points (20).
  • Joey Keane is second amongst AHL rookie AHL defensemen in points with 17, which also ranks him fifth among all defensemen in the league for points. Keane has an assist in each of the last four games. His point per game is 0.71.
  • Igor Shesterkin continues to have the lowest GAA in the league with 1.98. The prospect ranks fourth in the league for the highest save percentage of 0.930.
    • Igor is 9-3-3-1 thus far in Hartford. The prospect also recorded his first point in North America on Sunday against Providence as he earned the secondary assist on Phil Di Giuseppe’s tally.
  • The power play has increased production briefly. As a result, Hartford’s power-play now ranks 26th in the league, operating at 12.6%. This is the Wolf Pack’s greatest weakness of the season.
  • The penalty kill ranks 13th in the league, operating at 83.1%.

See It: Hartford’s 3 in 3 Weekend

Here is Lias Andersson’s first tally of the night from Saturday’s game.

Some could say Joey Keane had his first fight in the pro ranks on Saturday. After the rough and tumble, he was called for roughing. You decide if this is a fighting major or roughing.

Nick Ebert gets a great drop pass from Steven Fogarty. That was perfectly executed.

Here’s a look at Andersson’s second tally of the contest.

Here is a look at Phil Di Giuseppe’s tally. Shesterkin and Newell had assists on the play.

Which Rangers tryout candidate should get a look from the Wolf Pack https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-analysis/which-rangers-tryout-candidate-should-get-a-look-from-the-wolf-pack Sun, 15 Sep 2019 12:13:31 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=385001

Training camp is here for the Rangers. As for the Wolf Pack, their training camp will begin in mid to late September, around when the Rangers do their first round of cuts. This year’s camp features four players that are trying out for the big club.

Tryouts

Former Wolf Pack/Connecticut Whale players Connor Brickley and Michael Haley enter training camp in hopes to impress the Rangers brass. Joe Morrow and Mason Geertsen have also been invited. The situation with the cap space is a tough for the Rangers, however Hartford could give one of them a chance should they impress enough.

Looking at Hartford’s situation, they will be crowded with talented prospects and veterans as well. To be in the mix on the AHL level, these tryout players must be spectacular in order to be given any shot within the organization.

A deeper dive

Looking at the four tryout players, some are a better fit than others if they join Hartford. Let’s assess:

Connor Brickley

Connor Brickley returns to training camp after not getting an offer with New York. Last season the forward played in 13 games with Hartford (2 goals, 4 assists) and 14 games with the Rangers (1 goal, 3 assist). Prior to joining the organization through a trade, Brickley spent 39 games with the Milwaukee Admirals (7 goals, 4 assists). The 27 year old has solid experience on the AHL level while gaining additional experience in the NHL. Brickley’s playing style would fit well in Hartford as the Wolf Pack lack toughness in their lineup. The forward could provide a punch to the lineup physically.

Michael Haley

Michael Haley is back in the organization for training camp. The former Connecticut Whale/Wolf Pack forward (Wolf Pack was briefly the Whale from 2010-2013) spent two seasons in the AHL (2012-13, 2013-14). The 33 year old has quite the impressive numbers in penalty minutes for an enforcer. He is known to drop the gloves and will stir up the pot. Haley would fit the role of a tough guy for Hartford.

Joe Morrow

Joe Morrow enters training camp after a two season campaign with the Winnipeg Jets. The 26 year old spent his first four professional seasons in the AHL, then jumped to NHL full time excluding a three game stint with the Providence Bruins in the 2016-17 season. The defenseman has become a seventh man on the blue line and has played in limited games. Given the crowded blue line, Hartford does not need another defenseman.

Mason Geertsen

Mason Geertsen joins training camp after spending the last two seasons in the AHL. Last season with the Colorado Eagles, Geertsen produced 16 points (3 goals, 13 assists) in 58 games. In addition to offensive contributions, the defenseman is able to rack up high number of penalty minutes. Last season, Geertsen registered 134 penalty minutes.

As mentioned earlier, the Rangers have too many players on the blue line to justify another signing for Hartford’s blue line. The young prospect still has learning to do. On the plus, he is able to defend his teammates and is willing to drop the gloves. He can be an enforcer for the Pack, but given his position, sacrificing a prospect spot for an enforcer may not be ideal.

Pack could use toughness

Hartford has an opportunity to address toughness in their lineup as three of the four guys will address the toughness void in the lineup. The question remains if they want to take the spot of a younger player in order to do so. The AHL can be a rough and tumble league and it may be wise to have at least one tough guy in the lineup.
