Breaking: Rangers fire John Davidson and Jeff Gorton; announce Chris Drury as President and GM

News is breaking now that the New York Rangers have let go of President John Davidson and General Manager Jeff Gorton. According to Frank Seravalli, “Sources say that #NYR president John Davidson and GM Jeff Gorton scurried to distance themselves from the team statement that was issued on Tuesday night, telling other executives that they did not know it was in the works until after it was released.”

This is a stunning turn of events. Reporting as of this hour indicates that this was not related to the statement which James Dolan wanted to send out. It’s possible that this disconnect was the straw that broke the camel’s back as other reports indicate that Dolan felt the team underachieved.

In addition, Chris Drury appears to be likely headed for a promotion from associate GM to acting GM but that is not confirmed. This also calls into question the future of David Quinn with the organization as right now we have more questions than answers.

James Dolan not pleased with progress

By all accounts, the Rangers were building for longterm future success. It is unsure what James Dolan was expecting when he brought on John Davidson last season. There was a plan and it obviously must have had Dolan’s approval.

There could be a bigger philosophical disagreement at play here in terms of what ownership wants the team to do going forward. Maybe there was an opportunity to trade for Jack Eichel and Gorton refused to part with certain pieces upsetting Dolan.

At this point, I am spitballing like everyone else trying to make sense of this story. We will continue to monitor this story and provide more info when available.
