The Hartford Wolf Pack are heading back to the Calder Cup Playoffs after veteran goaltender Louis Domingue not only stopped pucks, but put one in from downtown.

In the final minute of play on Friday, the Springfield Thunderbirds were pushing hard for the equalizer. Domingue stopped a point shot, and from his knees, fired the puck into a yawning empty-net with 23 seconds left to seal the deal securing a playoff berth.

“It’s tough to describe the feeling,” Domingue said postgame. “But it’s my daughter’s birthday today, it’s a big day for our family. It’s one way to finish the night, for sure.”

Additional goals by Blake Hillman, Riley Nash, Alex Belzile, and Jake Leschyshyn led the way for the Wolf Pack’s 5-3 victory. Domingue turned aside 24 of 27 shots.

Domingue, 32, upped his record to 14-8-4 on the season with the win on Friday. He also has a 2.71 GAA and an .908 save percentage with 1 shutout.

The New York Rangers extended the veteran goaltender in early March to a one-year, one-way contract extension. His new deal has an average annual value of $775,000.

Earlier this season, with both Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick nursing injuries, Domingue made a spot start on Nov. 9 against the Minnesota Wild. He halted 25 shots en-route to a 4-1 win at Madison Square Garden.

For his NHL career, he’s 60-60-10 with a 3.02 GAA and a .905 save percentage in 143 appearances with the Arizona Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Penguins and Rangers.
