New York Rangers visit Oilers looking to extend win streak
After a Tuesday night tilt against the Calgary Flames that ended better than it began for the New York Rangers, the team continues its Western Canadian journey tonight with a second stop in Alberta — this time to face the Edmonton Oilers.
With Igor Shesterkin in goal for the game in Calgary, the Blueshirts recovered from a flat first period in the second two frames. They did so by capitalizing on the work of special teams, in addition to benefiting from a successful shut-down effort by the bottom six for a 3-1 victory.
New York scored all three of its goals in the second period, with two coming on the power play. It was the Blueshirts’ first win in Calgary since March 2, 2018.

New York Rangers vs Edmonton Oilers
Calgary created a higher percentage of high danger chances at the Rangers’ net than the Blueshirts mustered versus Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom, with the Canadian team featuring 23 chances overall to the New York team’s 16 chances.
Defenseman Erik Gustafsson, who scored the third goal, had this to say afterward:
“I think the first six minutes wasn’t the best start for us, but I think the last 14 we came into our game a little bit more, playing fast and [we] got the puck behind them,” explained Erik Gustafsson. “After that, we kind of picked up our game a little more — and I think when we play like that we can win against everyone.”
As per the Rangers, New York has recorded a power play goal in five of its first six games. The team’s 30% power play percentage ranks sixth in the NHL. Moreover, the Blueshirts have allowed the fourth fewest (tied) goals in the NHL with 13 and fifth fewest GA/GP (2.17). The Rangers have also allowed the fewest shots per game in the NHL (24.0).
In all four of their wins, New York has allowed only one goal; and in three of the four wins the team has won by two or more goals.
According to NHL Edge, the Rangers have spent the sixth most percentage of time in the offensive zone in the league, at a 43.4% clip; and seventh least percentage of time in the defensive zone at 39.0%.
The New York Rangers hold a lifetime mark against the Edmonton Oilers of 35-34-9-4.
Chris Kreider is 2 goals shy of tying Andy Bathgate (272) for fourth most goals in Rangers’ history.
