Rangers fans wanting to watch 2021 first-round draft pick Brennan Othmann play in Canada’s opening match at the World Junior Championship were disappointed.

Othmann was scratched for Canada’s 5-2 win over Austria on Wednesday.

In the team’s exhibition match against Sweden in preparation for the tournament, Othmann took some bad penalties. It appears head coach Dave Cameron wanted to send him and the team a message.

Brennan Othmann scratched for Team Canada

The move by Cameron was met with some scrutiny, but Canada is right back at it today against a tougher opponent in Slovakia. Othmann should be back in the lineup for that contest.

It would be foolish for coach Cameron to leave an offensive weapon like Othmann out of the lineup. The 19 year-old registered 50 goals and 97 points in 66 games for the OHL’s Flint Firebirds this past season.

A bigger question is where will Othmann play going forward? He skated on the third line in the matchup versus Sweden.

Dylan Garand is expected to start in goal with Sebastian Cossa playing against Austria and stopping 22 of 24 shots. New York selected Garand in the fourth-round of the 2020 draft.

Will Cuylle, who was in the lineup yesterday, played on the fourth line. The second-round pick from the 2020 draft did not register a point in just under 12 minutes of ice time.

All 7 New York Rangers prospects are in action today.

The New York Rangers released a nice recap video of Jacob Trouba being named the 28th captain in franchise history.

Trouba is entering his fourth season with the team after being acquired in a trade from the Winnipeg Jets in 2019. The 28 year-old defenseman picked up 39 points in 81 games in 2021-22.

Known for his hard-hitting play on the ice, Trouba is also a mentor to many of the young players and was acknowledged as de facto captain last season by Gerard Gallant.

“I’m not going to change who I am,” Trouba said about wearing the C. “The reason all this happened was because I was myself and true to myself. I intend on being the same person.”
