New York Rangers get taste of own medicine in OT loss to Canucks 3-2
The New York Rangers got a taste of their own medicine in Vancouver on Tuesday night. The Canucks rallied to tie it in the third and followed it up with an OT winner to end the Rangers road streak at 5 straight wins.
However; it was goalie Thatcher Demko who stole the show in the final stanza. He stopped all 11 shots hurled his way, including an unreal pad stop on Artemi Panarin with the Blueshirts on a 5 on 3 man advantage late.
Vancouver’s big final period and hot goaltending is the formula that’s worked for the Blueshirts a few times this season already.
“On the 5 on 3 we had couple of great chances but Demko made those incredible saves,” head coach Gerard Gallant noted about the loss.
Recap: Canucks 3 vs Rangers 2 (OT)
J.T. Miller scored his second goal of the game with 2:38 remaining in overtime and the host Vancouver Canucks overcame a two-goal deficit and recorded a 3-2 victory over the visiting New York Rangers on Tuesday night.
Miller helped Vancouver get its first home win after it dropped three straight one-goal contests. He finished off the win by converting a wraparound into the vacated right side of the net after New York goaltender Igor Shesterkin lost sight of the puck.
Mika Zibanejad and Panarin scored power-play goals for the Rangers, who saw their five-game road winning streak stopped. Defenseman Adam Fox collected two assists after signing a seven-year contract extension Monday.
“We made a couple mistakes, they obviously had a push back and scored on their chances in the third,” center Mika Zibanejad said. “I thought we did a pretty god job up until the third, but it wasn’t a full 60 minutes and that’s why we sit here with the loss.”
Miller and Vasily Podkolzin scored in the first 5:19 of the third while Conor Garland collected two assists. Vancouver goaltender Thatcher Demko highlighted a 23-save performance with a diving skate save on Artemi Panarin with about 2 1/2 minutes remaining during a New York power play after losing his stick and pad during a scramble.
Shesterkin made 33 saves, including 13 on six Vancouver power plays.
“You’ve got to give Vancouver credit,” Gallant said about not converting on the late power plays. “I like the way we played for the most part. It was one of those games up for grabs but we got a big point on the road.”
