Rangers cut 13 players; roster down to 48 as preseason begins

The New York Rangers pared their roster by 13 players on Saturday, leaving 48 remaining as they prepare for their preseason opener against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Sunday afternoon.

Eight of the 13 players cut from the camp roster are headed for training camp with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers’ affiliate in the American Hockey League. The most notable were goaltenders Hugo Ollas and Callum Tung, who split the two rookie games the Rangers played against the Philadelphia Flyers’ rookies in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The Blueshirts lost 4-3 in overtime with Ollas in goal on Friday, then won 5-2 with Tung in net the next night.

The other players headed for training camp with the Wolf Pack include forwards Gavin Hain, Kyle Jackson, Zakary Karpa and Sullivan Mack, as well as defenseman Chris Merisier-Ortiz and Cooper Moore.

Three other players, forward Raoul Boilard and defensemen Artem Gonchar and Evan Passmore, will return to their respective junior teams. Boilard scored a goal in the rookie game last Friday.

Two other defenseman, Tim Lovell and Corbin Vaughan, were released from their amateur tryouts. Vaughan got some notoriety by engaging in a scrap with Flyers rookie Sawyer Boulton in the second rookie game.
