New York Rangers 2026 free agency tracker: Signings, trades, analysis

Armed with approximately $15.675 million in salary-cap space and still with significant upgrades needed on their roster, the New York Rangers arrive at the start of NHL free agency on Wednesday seeking ways to continue their organizational retool.

They already landed a pair of foundational pieces this offseason, acquiring Pavel Dorofeyev in a significant trade with the Vegas Golden Knights, and selecting hulking defenseman Alberts Smits with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

That’s a really good start for Chris Drury and Co. But the Rangers can’t stop there. They must make shrewd decisions in free agency, especially considering how shallow the UFA talent pool is. Still, they want to find another top-six forward and top-four defenseman, and perhaps some bottom-six forward help, plus a veteran goalie to play in Hartford of the American Hockey League and be an insurance policy behind Igor Shesterkin and Dylan Garand.

Of course, the Rangers need not try to fill all their holes through a weak free agent class. They certainly can try and swing big on the trade market, which is what they did last week, securing Dorofeyev, the goal-scoring stud they absolutely had to have.

The Rangers are linked to Alexander Nikishin, the Carolina Hurricanes RFA defenseman who’s on the trade blockt. And New York’s got Vincent Trocheck and Braden Schneider as key trade chips of their own.

Not everything needs to get done July 1. But it’s another benchmark day for all NHL teams, and there’s a reason why the word “frenzy” is often associated with the start of free agency.

So, join us her for the ride. Just as was the case with our Rangers 2026 NHL Draft Tracker, we’ve got you covered with all the news and analysis right here.
