New York Rangers Daily: Waiting on K’Andre Miller injury update, positive Mathew Barzal news for rival

After knocking off the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 on Wednesday, the New York Rangers had a day off Thursday, with coach Peter Laviolette likely looking ahead to another three-games-in-four-days stretch on the schedule.

The Rangers practice Friday, and we should get our first update on the condition of K’Andre Miller. The 24-year-old defenseman didn’t play in the third period against the Sabres because of an upper-body injury.

He hasn’t been great this season — though he was in the midst of a decent outing in Buffalo before being hurt — but the Rangers do not have many good options to replace him on the blue line. Chad Ruhwedel is the seventh defenseman, and in the minors there’s Matthew Robertson — fresh off a three-assist game Wednesday — and Connor Mackey, perhaps Casey Fitzgerald as an option.

The Rangers begin their 3-in-4 with a Saturday matinee at The Garden against the Los Angeles Kings.

Our Tom Castro breaks down why this Rangers slide is on the players, not the coach.

We examined three takeaways from the Rangers win against the Sabres, which unfortunately included what Miller’s injury could mean for them.

There was also a closer look at the Rangers’ power-play struggles, though they did pop a clutch man-up goal in Buffalo.

Rangers goalie prospect Dylan Garand is on quite a roll for the Hartford Wolf Pack. The 22-year-old earned his second straight shutout Wednesday and has allowed one goal in a personal three-game winning streak.

Speaking of the Kings, their six-game winning streak came to an end in a 3-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils. Jack Hughes had a goal and two assists for the winning side.

J.T. Miller had two assists in his return to the Vancouver Canucks lineup in a 4-0 win against the Florida Panthers. The former Rangers forward missed 10 games during a leave of absence from the team for personal reasons.

The Toronto Maple Leafs pulled even with the Panthers atop the Atlantic Division with a 3-2 win against the visiting Anaheim Ducks. But they’re holding their breath because goalie Anthony Stolarz was knocked out of the game after one period of play due to a lower-body injury.

Mathew Barzal was back on the ice for the Islanders, taking part in their morning skate Thursday. The talented forward’s been out since sustaining an upper-body injury Oct. 30. Making that news is even better is that he wore a regular jersey and was joined by injured forward Anthony Duclair and defenseman Adam Pelech. Each is listed as day to day after being out of the lineup for an extended stretch.

Watch Scott Laughton score all four goal in the Philadelphia Flyers’ 4-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings, which lifted them one point ahead of the Rangers in the Metropolitan Division standings.

The Tampa Bay Lightning lit up the Calgary Flames 8-3, and Nikita Kucherov tied franchise records for most assists (5) and points (6) in a single game.
